N.E.W.S Appreciation Thread West in Particular

Now I know many of you for reasons which escape me (in other words don't try and explain them again!!) Hate news, but I love it, love it, love it!!!!!,

As much as I love the whole damn thing I wanted to take the time out to post my thoughts on the devestatingly beautiful/Rip roaring funk of West. I can't possibly be the only one out here who feels that songs covers all the bases and just out and out rocks. C'mon people let me hear you shout out some good love for West!!!!!

If you haven't listened to N.E.W.S in a while put it in and skip to # 3 and just take the journey. If you are a N.E.W.S. hater (which invariably most who will post on this thread are going to be sad give West a shot and let the funk take you there baby!!!!

Peace

Oh yes, N.E.W.S. is a good one, and I particularly love West (as much as the other three). West is the song I put on when I have a shower and get dressed to go out. Check my singature, which hasn't changed in a year or so. West is *superb*.
Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

"West" is a gem. I like to speed down the freeway with it loud, the way Funk is supposed to be. I'd be willing to bet Herbie digs it.

I appreciate NOTHING about N.E.W.S. Nothing. If it happened to be a human, I'd kill it.

can't understand why people don't even appreciate this album. For years lots of us wanted him to sound different and new, the minute he does, we want him to sing songs.....it's terrible. Well, i think NEWS is by far the newest and most interesting thing he dared to do. I even find South (the bass-part in the second half!) more sexy than lots of his so-called hit-potential-radio-friendly stuff like Call my Name....!!

By far his best album in years. I think to some extent people rubbish N.E.W.S because it's not what people come to expect of Prince's music. There was none of that horrible, horrible funk noodling that permeats many of his recent records. None of that sickly homage to musical peers. Just a straight up, interesting album that showed glimpses of his musical genius. How dissapointing it was then that he should follow it up with Musicology. Although I'd have to disagree with the inlay statement 'New directions in music'; given the set in stone fact that many, many more artists signed and unsigned are making a hell of a lot more interesting music than Prince these days, at least N.E.W.S interested pioneers of new and radical music such as the UK Radio 1 DJ and owner of Talkin Loud Records owner Gilles Peterson.

Love NEWS. I was about to give up on Prince after TRC. Then I saw an album of instramentals had slipped out without me noticing! I instantly snatched it up and loved it. Of course, I'm a musician and a jazz fan. Some folks will NOT listen to any music without lyrics. I don't understand why, but live and let live. I can only hope that Prince will continue to put out these interesting and refreshing instramental records occasionally (NEWS, Xpectation, and C-Note are my most frequently played CDs lately).

I guess its just my listening taste. I have tried several times to get into either NEWS or TRC but it just isnt happening. Oddly enough, I can get into Exodus and NPS moreso than news or trc. Im such an avid fan ill keep trying to dig them.

confuse I'm not sure what that statement has to do with whether or not other people are making more interesting music than Prince. It was a new direction for Prince.

I think that's perhaps the point that I was trying to make. I think to some extent some folk are accustomed to pigeon holing Prince's music into a funk, pop character; even an album with lyrics speaking in more general terms. I find N.E.W.S. are much more interesting opus than say Musicology and New Power Soul.

Well, only he knows what he meant by that statement I guess. I was making the assumption that he meant it in general terms as opposed to his own body of work.

Well this is really cool, I did not think that I would get this many positive responses! Of course everyone has their opinions on what they like and I just wanted to hear that for a change. So many times people diss Musicology, or TRC or N.E.W.S and I wanted this thread to be about what everyone liked about N.E.W.S. Cool beans folks!!! biggrin

Peace

I agree with you. And the one in "South" is pretty amazing as well.

I keep trying to see where people are coming from with regards to calling it "chill music" or "background music."

Everytime I put this on in the background, within minutes I'm up unable to concentrate on anything else and I end up turning up the volume or putting on a set of headphones.

I'm a big NEWS fan... Jazz is the kind of music I listen to 80% of the time and NEWS is the cd I've wanted P to play for years... North is my favorite with West a close second... I would love to see Prince do an all instrumental NEWS, Xpectation concert! But, sadly that would nver go over with most of his fans... Most people who knock these recordings have no appeciation for Jazz in general.
