I think what you're seeing is Michael's natural tendancy to copy whatever is big at the time.
He's often copied whatever the trend is in America.

5) Originally bleaching his skin, growing his hair out in the same style of Purple Rain-ish Prince, thicker eyeliner, eyebrows, the cut of his clothes, the more "mysterious" personality because of Prince from the 1985 American Music Awards, asking him to be in your first video back BAD, the lace cover for BAD, etc,etc,ect He has a serious hard-on for Prince inbetween Thriller & BAD
