The song is called "The Ladder".
I don't know of any longer version other than what has been shown on the various documentaries that showed it. It is great though. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

I have it on video too, it's very beautiful. I don't have the complete version. It was a soundcheck for the lovesexy show, that much I know.

I believe it is a recording from a soundcheck before one of the two Lovesexy concerts in Los Angeles (Memorial Sports Arena), November (6 or 7) 1988.
It was first featured in Prince: Musical Portrait, which was premiered on BBC television on 27 September 1989. Directed by Albert Magnoli, the documentary was 9 minutes long, and an edited version was made available for download on the NPGMC in the January 2002 edition. The version of The Ladder was also used in subsequent documentaries authorised by Prince, but this is the longest version available, as far as I am aware. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

I'd love to have a job at the BBC and see what other footage they had for the Omnibus documentary they made a few years ago. I wonder if it's sitting in the BBC library or if they had to edit it with Prince in the US !?

I remember seeing this on the The Prince OF Paisley Park documentary on LIL MAN's biography on A&E in 93'. It was truly beautiful the way he was singing and playing.

Does anyone have even an audio version of this particular performance? Or anything that sounds like it? (The Ladder, live and groovy like that?) What does he say before it fades out? I first time I saw this was in '89 in a documentary that Bravo in the states showed. The Prince of Paisley Park.
The whole song was played ,but Bravo cut into it while the credits ran to promo their station.. That's became my favorite song right then. The performance of the song was great. Maybe we can ask NPGMC to release the complete video and an audio file. I've not known him to play this song live (ever) and I've looked.. (Look it up). At lease I've not seen it documented anywhere. Maybe someone can ask him to play it during these soundcheck interviews. I plan on it!!! cracknbush
