The solution:

Offer free CD for $1 extra with concert ticket.

Or make an album so good, it doesn't need to be given away to gain momentum.

Also, I think the promotional machine works out quite well, I hear from alot of casual listening people who have
heard something about a new record (in Europe!). That is quite an achievement, already.

(Where's the time that Bart Van Hemelen was all over this place, and especially these kind of topics. biggrin )

THE SALES / AND SMART MOVES ! (my personal opinion)

I think Prince made again a fine twist by playing chess with the music indurstry and the billboard sales figures. Even if you like it or not - even if you like the 'Musicology' album or not. (personally i think it's a mediocre album)

Few facts are for sure and without any doubt ;
The guy is 46 years old, plays live unlike anybody else.
The musicology tour is dispite the lack of explicit Prince language, a very good live show and interesting circus. (critics are praising him over and over again!)
He is a Jehova witness, if you like it or not (i don't like it, but it's his life choice. Personally i don't give a shit even if he was with the Featherless Chicken Witnesses).
He's back on the block! The world knows it, the press writes about it, everywhere!
He gets millions of people to come and see him (wait for the European leg of his upcomming world tour).
He makes smart moves (again), buy fucking up counting how many albums he has sold. It's a bit like a Jehova thing. biggrin they stick it in your throat, once you're with 'm, if you like it or not! Same goes for the Musicology album. You go to see the man, and you dance to his believes; and get funked up with his latest when buying a ticket! Sales figures go up, Prince happy again.
But....; his official website remains crap to loyal fans (compared to other great acts of today)! (Thank god there's .ORG and housequake .com and many others.) wink

Let's hope (!!!) that these new STARDOM times (that's what he really wants and needs) will provide him again with the songcraftmanship which he is so unique with.. I hope he openes up a bit more to other people, or maybe even to people fromhis own past, the way he is doing right now, bit by bit.

I remixed the Musicology album to my own likenings, and i tell you, it's a hell of more funky! lol razz

Now all you sigh mutherfuckers up against the wall, say what you want, Prince is one hell of an artist that makes 'moves'. We miight start to compare him with David Bowie for all these strange but somehow interesting moves.

All hail to Prince and The Revolution!

razz i cant believe some people come to the org with the belief that their view is superior and cannot be challenged. This goes equally for Mr apple2 and the 'haters' that disdain the views of prince supporters. Please do challenge me if u think i am wrong but the whole point of msg boards is to generate discussion and get people talking isn't it? Not to put down the opinions of others. And i disdain those people that put down other opinions. If u hate musicology that is fine and no lover of the album has any right to tell u you're wrong. Vice versa if u love it etc.

Some of u people need some music education and education in respecting others' views. Its about taste and opinion and neither can be right or wrong. Watch High Fidelity people and shut up already damn!! razz

What a joke..This is deception at the highest level. The concert sales should not count, since most people that went to the shows only went because of Prince playing his old songs. Most could care less about the new stuff. I bet most of them either sold their copies to cd stores or use it as a handy coaster.

Hey, give us the names of the people you intereviewed to get this information. I downloaded Musicology when it came out. I'm going to the DC show tonight. I can listen to musicology on my computer at home, I'll leave my new disc in my car and my wife will get a copy and she can have it in her car. So, each copy actually serves a purpose. Plus, my son will have one too, and he can keep that in his room to play on his computer.

I know a lot of young people who are between 16 and 21 and they are really feeling Musicology CD. I asked them what tracks they like and they will all say, "Musicology," "Call My Name," "A Million Days," "The Marrying Kind" and "If I Was The Man In Ur Life."

Two of these young people are into music, playing bass guitar and keyboards. So young musicians will always connect with Prince.

After all these years, Prince will always connect to a huge age group. It can only get better from him and he keeps putting albums out.

Let's just see what happens when he drops the next album. I'm sure all the people who went to his concerts will embrace the next project.

I wish these jumps were based on people actually going out and buying the album. I think it's really ridiculous that anyone could get excited by these chart jumps, seeing as it's only because more albums were given away last week. What's even sadder is the hardcore Prince fan who's got a closet full of Musicology albums because they've been going to concert after concert after concert.

Any Orgers out there who could wallpaper at least one whole wall with your giveaways? Holla back.

But now Prince has created a "who's good LIVE" chart!!! And all this in and out the charts appears like P screwing the charts! Oops watch that language now.

People! People!

Times are changing!

The old days of Billboard counting is gone! CDs given away at concerts and being counted will take over the industry. Soon, there will be ten other artists doing this.

Will the ones making a stink about it still be making a stink about later too?

In so many ways these charts are a joke, and Prince is having the biggest laugh of all. That's the best part of all of this, to me. That, and the fact that this tour is such a huge success that it's keeping Musicology near the top of the charts for soooo long.

It'd be nice if the jump was cuz people were actually BUYING the album, not force-fed it through a World Wide Tour tube (seems pretty goofy when 3 or 4 people in my house are stuck with the same CD). I wanna see Prince hit the top ten because he blows the competition away, not because of some marketing strategy.

Like counting CD sales that are INCLUDED in the ticket price of a show you were going to go to anyway. Prince needs to have a hit because Prince deserves a hit. He needs to blow the public out of the water, again.

So, after attending the DC shows last week, I now have 6 copies of this CD, whereas I would have bought one. I'll be giving the others away, but after listening to it, I'm almost embarassed to.

This album is so much more sonically boring than TRC and ONA Live... uggh. With the exception of the drums, it has the same studio sounds that he used in the Emancipation, NPS and Rave albums (same keyboard, guitar, etc.).

Why did he abandon the organic, soft "live" sound that TRC had... if you'd have taken the pop feel and songwriting of Musicology and combined it with the musicianship and sound of TRC, you'd have a real winner that could sell without being given away at concerts.

The only artificial number on the chart is Prince's. So what's his point? If the point is that bad music is popular, that's no newsflash. And Prince certainly didn't complain when Purple Rain led the charts for the better part of a year. I don't think he's trying to subvert the system, but simply to find a way to make it work for him. And it's worked brilliantly. But when his follow-up sells 500,000 copies, all this talk about remaking the system will be dead and forgotten.
