We do love him, but we don't think he's a religion. exactly. there's a godzilla huge line between admiring someone and worshipping someone as if they're a religious deity of whatever sort. urthighs, i know full-well you got that "prince is a human being" memo that the rest of us got. you didn't throw it away on accident, didja?

"Religion is something infinitely simple, ingenuous. It is not knowledge, not content of feeling (for all content is admitted from the start, where a man comes to terms with life), it is not duty and not renunciation, it is not restriction: but in the infinite extent of the universe it is a direction of the heart."

-Selected Letters of Rainer Maria Rilke is that your "yes" or "no"? That...is an interpretation. If one were to subscribe to this, then perhaps a 'person' could in fact be another's religion.

This right here is why I don't blame Prince for having an entourage of body guards. In fact, I hope he never stops doing that. >.< Christ. "Down by the riverbank in the old bayou.. I'm digging a grave into mud just for you."

IS PRINCE A RELIGION IN HIS OWN RIGHT?
im not religious in the slightest but i do follow prince in whatever he says and whatever he does regarding his music, so if i dont listen 2 him or watch him i feel empty, so i feel as though i need 2 feel his vibe everyday. just like people feel god, so is prince a kind of god u tell me, do u feel the same???? I'm not religious either, but when it comes to PRINCE, he is almost like my "GOD" -- I know, I know, he sings, now, "He's your messiah ..." but I can't help but to see Prince in that way. I listen to him everyday. I can't help it. I still sing (at the concerts): "I'm your Messiah..." It took some time for me to not feel "sad" whenever I thought about me never ever knowing PRINCE at all. I'm still not quite over it. When I realized that I might not ever know PRINCE, it was like realizing everyone has to die. One time, I was shopping, and I was looking for something for the PRINCE concert at Club Black in NEW YORK and the sales person asked, "What are you looking for?" and I said, "Something to wear to the PRINCE concert" and she said, "If ain't GOD, I ain't going to see anyone in concert." Then she started to talk about how too many people worship stars and need to believe in GOD and go to church. And then I'm waiting in line for the concert at Club Black and I am freezing and this girl says, "You'd think PRINCE is God the way I'm freezing out here ..." This was around the time, I think, Passions of the Christ was at the theaters and everyone ('cept me) was on that trip. I'm not religious, but most people tell me I live as though I am in a nunnery because the way I eat (my strict diet) and resisting temptation (like drugs, alcohol). I guess since I don't go to church, I "worship" everything else -- like PRINCE and John Mayer. Well, is Prince a religion in his own right? To me he is. The Dreaming Peasant
"Penny, penny bring me luck...." I'm just a child; I'm so darn shy; a knock at the door, and I run to hide.

Obsessive compulsive FANatical behavior is not religion. Prince is just an entertainer. I can see how an obsessive compulsive fanatic could interpet their own behavior as a form of worship. It actually is. Idolworship. Is it religion in the main definition? No. Religion is the belief in a deity. Prince is just a man. Its funny how arrogantly convienent it is to dismiss all organized religions as a form of control when they conflict with peoples personal desires. Actually, most are a form of organized worship. Some have more strict rules of worship, some don't. Most of the world's civilized societies have a monotheological form of worship. It ain't Prince. I have yet to see his ass do anything that wasn't self-indulgent in some form or another. I'm sure the title of this thread would be a nice ego boost for him, but worship of any man is actually the worship of failure. Man will always fail you. When this fool starts healing the sick and willing things into existience, then I'll retract my statements. I don't think I have anything to worry about. Some of ya'll do, though. Some people around here need therapy. Obsessive compulsive behavior is a disease. Some of ya'll need treatment.

I don't think this idea is as outlandish as some might make it seem. It's not uncommon within the world's religions to find that people possessing a special gift, who have the power to move people, being though of as "holy". For example, if you go into a Sikh gurdwara (place of worship), you will often find images around the walls of those who are believed to be "gurus" (teachers), who are not necessarily part of the religion, but who have imparted a spiritual message - people such as Martin Luther King, etc. Prince would be considered by many to occupy a special place in their life, with a gift that has the power to move them (to dance, to cry, to feel uplifted, etc) - so why not consider him a 'holy man'? Even in secular society, artists and art often occupy a special, spiritual place... Many people turn to music for comfort after a traumatic event (a breakup, a loss, etc). Even on a larger scale this is true - after 9/11, for instance, many of us who don't have a religious faith, sought a similar kind of reassurance from music. I remember Sting's "Fragile" being played a lot, and seeming to encapsulate many people's response quite fittingly. Sometimes people who occupy an important "secular" position become thought of as Gods. The Rastafarian religion is based around the belief that Emperor Haile Sellassie III of Ethiopia was a deity. I don't believe Prince is a God. But I see no more evidence that this is true or false than there is for the claim that someone who taught people and possibly led an insurgency in the Middle East 2000 years ago, should be considered a God. It all comes down to faith..... "Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced." - James Baldwin
