GLITTER VS. PURPLE RAIN OK.
I was unfortunenate enough to have turned on the T.V. and witness the atrocity that is Mariah Carey's "GLITTER". It wasn't that the movie was so horrible, though at times I wanted to crawl up and die, but that Mariah's acting is so incredibly aweful, all her scenes looked like a set up for one of those cheesy softcore porn flicks on showtime. I know we knock Prince about GB and UTCM, and even Purple Rain, but damn--compared to some other Rock star's films, he's practically Oscar Material in My opinion. WHat's yours? .. PR is one of the best rock musicals ever made. As a film, it's in my top 10 only b/c the music is so dear to my heart. Despite the cheese I still think it holds up pretty well for a film starring all non-actors...

GLITTER VS. PURPLE RAIN I'm not a big fan of either, but if I had to choose, I'd go for Purple Rain. Mariah's acting was horrendous...especially that love scene. WTF was she trying to do?!?! ....major emphasis on the word "trying" here. I've seen corpses that were less stiff than she was in that scene. At least Prince's bitch slap to Apollonia looked believable. Plus, all Glitter did was make me realize how flat Mariah's ass is...she ain't got no booty in da pants. But, the music was great and I love Da Brat, so I've seen worse....wait, no I haven't. SPREAD LOVE UNTIL THE SUN'S FINAL RISE--The Duality a.k.a. "WYNTER SKYE"

OMG, I love Glitter! It's really terrible, but it's so damn entertaining. Every bad thing in it adds up to a lot of goodness! The only good songs in it are the remakes (and even then the only one that's okay on repeat listens is the remake of I Didn't Mean to Turn You On), and the look of the film flip-flops between decades. The only consistent thing about it is the acting - awful.
There isn't one thing that sets Purple Rain apart from it; there are a host of things, and it is a genuinely great film. The music is great, the storyline -- albeit basic and not altogether original -- is engaging and believable. It's no secret that Prince is no terrific actor, but the difference between his performance and Mariah's is that he has great music to to counter his performance, and he knows to let the music do the acting for him. Watching Pariah Scary try to squeeze out the tears in the "emotional climax" is terrifying. In my opinion, the two can only be mentioned in the same breath to show how to do a rock n roll film well and how to do it poorly. Favorite Glitter moment: when Mariah, damn it...when "Billie Frank" is walking down the alley after meeting the DJ and securing studio time to record the album of her dreams. She's so excited that a burst of glitter erupts from her head to segue into the next scene. Classic and dreadful!

Xcept 4 Olga Karlatos & Clarence Williams III, right? I know they're established actors. When I said "starrring" I was thinking more of the "lead" actors, not so much the supporting roles (at least what I consider "supporting"). You know what the fuck I mean

Prince would be insulted. EXACTLY!!!!! Why people knock Purple Rain I'll never understand, they weren't trying for the Oscar for best acting, and let's see a real actor try to pull of the grinding in Darling Nikki.

my favorite part of glitter (aside from the credits at the end) is when the dj taps that azz and they are laying in bed...the camera is on mariah's face for like minutes (really on seconds) and she has this "i just shitted on the sheets" kinda dumb look on her face..like somebody forgot to yell "action!"
not to mention, the PR ripoff power ballad dedicated to a gunshot victim at the end. AND Da Brat was fucking awful AND the fake video they was making with her and all the gay dancers that she was so uncomfortable with looks like a video she would put out now hereself you look better on your facebook page than you do in person

I just wish that poeple would stop concentrating on the differences between Mariah and Prince, and start looking at all the vast similarities between them.

Weeelll.....I've seen Glitter and I just finished watching PR for the umpteen millionth time. I find both movies enjoyable for the embarrassing acting and overwhelming cheese. Sorry, but even if I were into women, I don't think Glitter would ever make me sweat the way PR does. If P started doing Preparation H commercials, I'd suddenly develop a hemorrhoid fetish.
PR has the fun cheese factor, the even more enjoyable bad acting, Prince's over-the-top sex appeal, and incredible music. My main beef with the film is that it's really difficult to watch some of the performances. He looks so awkward and uncomfortable at times. He's such an amazing performer IRL, but his poor acting ability reminds me of someone parodying him on SNL or something; only it's actually HIM. It's a little unnerving to see him putting on such unbelievably fake performances, when you know how talented he really is. Damn; those eyes.....I almost wanna go watch it again.....he's just yummy. For me, Purple Rain is the winner and my fav. At times, I felt sorry for Mariah. For the most part, it seemed that she was mimicking certain Prince facial gestures like the pouting and the thing she did with her eyes.

Agreed, for a second there, in some of her scenes, I swore I thought she was going to break out that stupid puppet and try the ventriloquist routine.
