I hear you girl smile I think a tat should represent something about you personally. Yea we all like Prince, but if liking Prince is the most profound thing you have to say & you wanna wear it like a badge of honor... I dunno, I think it's a bit lame boxed BUT I don't wanna offend anyone on here w/ a symbol tat! Maybe it's too late for that lol but I really don't. I think the symbol itself looks cool, I just can't see having it on my body for the rest of my days neutral

But "F" me, there's so many people with tats & license plates & all kinds of Prince shit... maybe I'm the lame one biggrin

woot! lame woot!

I totally agree with you. I could never put someone else's name on my body. I have a few tattoos and they are all designed by me and about me. No one else in the world has them. But if the people here with symbol tattoos are happy with them, then good for them. It's just something I would never do.

That's why this is a free country...we all have the luxury to do as we please as long as it doesn't violate another. So congrats on your new tattoo and disregard those that it despleases since it is YOUR body after all and you don't have to answer to anyone.

Crazy becuase you have someone else's (former) name tattooed on your body?

HELL YES.

Stupid too, I might add.

I don't really care who of you I offend by saying that either. WHY would anyone, fan, fam, or otherwise, permanently tattoo someone else's name on their body? If it's a bad idea to tattoo a spouse or lover's name, (and it IS) what in God's name makes you think it's a good idea to tattoo a complete stranger's name?

Maybe because it's a free country and what someone else does with his or her body is his or her business and no one else's....just a thought

Of course it's no one else's business.

Doesn't mean I can't think it's a fucking stupid idea. And you didn't answer my question: If it's a bad idea to tattoo a lover or spouses name, what makes anyone think it's a good idea to tattoo a strangers' name permanently on your body?

I have been wanting a tattoo for quite a few years now, and I keep threatening to get one but never do. My wife thinks I'm crazy but she kind of eggs me on because she knows I'll never actually do it.

I tell her that I will...it's just that I have to come up with something truly significant and about me that I can live with for the rest of my life.

Most of the time, though, my ideas include some form of the symbol. I was planning to get one in black, I guess. But with something else involved...I am always coming back to fire in some way...I feel it represents me.

For those of you who are so turned off by people who tattoo the Prince symbol on themselves, I would think it slightly hypocritical if you WERE okay with astrological symbols (nobody has mentioned them yet). Your complaint is that the Prince symbol doesn't "represent something about [you] personally." Neither does an astrological symbol! It's simply a visual representation of what time of year you were born. Those of us who buy into astrology on some deeper level might argue that their "sign" includes properties of human nature with which they share, but that's no better than having a Prince symbol. In other words, I can tattoo a leo symbol on me (which by the way I know a few of you have and I think it's damn cool!) and say that "leos are aggressive and outgoing and like the sun" or whatever (clearly I don't follow astrology) but I could just as easily get a prince and say that it represents me in that I am a fan of Prince. Same difference.

I like the Prince symbol visually because it's NOT a "name," per se. It's a SYMBOL. So in addition to its properties as tied to Prince, we can find individual meanings in it. Its combination of male and female symbols, for instance. Or, in my case, I am drawn to the obvious symbol of the cross contained within it.

I know plenty of people who get tattoos for FAR LESS CONNECTIVE reasons, like a white guy getting an Asian symbol because "it looks cool." I would think if you like Prince enough to be permanently marked as a fam, than "goodie for you!"

I'm planning to do it...um...soon...

...as soon as I can figure out what it should look like.

it's the truth, calhoun--about 98% of the folks i've met within the fan community, whether they be orgers or not, have a symbol tattoo somewhere on 'em. it sorta saddens me--most of us are some of the most imaginative, creative folks on the planet, but yet n'still they have the same fuckin tattoo. variations on it (flowers growing around it, stars, etc.) don't count. it's the same damned symbol.

Whatchoo got then Dansa? I want photos! mad

I got my tat of the symbol because the one i got i have not seen anyone else with it, when u see someone with that symbol it's always the same thing so when i saw the Guitar Player Magazine cover it was the bomb, so i got it the same size and the same color but mines on the bottom of my forearm this is not my 1st tat or my last but when u do get one u must make sure that it's what u really want! no matter what it is,and u don't have 2 explain it 2 no one.

Sorry, but I didn't answer your question because I didn't find it relevant. You seemed to be operating under the assumption that just because you may think it's a bad idea, then it is univerally a bad idea. Just because you or I wouldn't do it, doesn't make it a bad idea for someone else. I generally try to reserve my judgement on the actions of others. Plus, I generally don't care what other people do unless it effects me personally. Oh well, have a good one!

I love each of my Prince tatoos they are like no one elses even the symbol I have designed each one to be different thebest is the image of his face very different than any I have seen. I recoment designing your own or having someone do it for you so they are unique and not like others if you want a Prince tat. And one that is special and means something to only U. wink

I don't know what possessed me, I'd never thought about getting one before but my obsessive fan behaviour got the better of me and I got it done this morning so it's still only healing.

It's only a small one on my shoulder, and I gave the tattooist the Emancipation cd to copy the design so it's the exact same size as that.

I finally settled on black after pondering on purple for a while but I'm still not sure.

It was good fun as well coz the tattooist, who was 32 and looked nothing like the type you'd think would be into Prince, was raving about the Black Album and some of his live bootlegs.

He also said he'd bought sott FOUR times no less in the eighties coz the album was so big it kept snapping. Me being only 20 I don't think I've ever talked to a stranger so enthusiastically about Prince before so that was cool.

I wonder how many people in Dublin now have Prince tattoos, though I'd say I'm in a minority... any Irish orgers with P tattooes here?

i think the symbol design is cool but, in all honesty, getting it tattoed is kind of the same as getting one of those popular tribal tats. not terribly unique. if you like it, though, more power to ya!

i carved/burned the symbol into both of my upper arms about 13 yrs ago ( i was a little messed up back then) i have been a prince fan for over 20 yrs now and other than family, he has been a constant in my life, even when best friends and even god was not....when i started to go down the path of destruction, i always tried to find meaning in what prince was doing at the time, for whatever reason, i always thought we thought alike and connected on some other level, anyways, that was over 10 years ago, the funny thing about the scarred symbols on my arms is that on one arm, only the likeness of a cross remains, on the other, a circle and arrow.....i've wanted to officially tattoo the symbol for over a decade now, and still do, i disagree with the 'tribal' comparison, the smbol means much more to me than just prince's name, although it's obviuos if i do it now, i'll be viewed in the same context as some of these other 'fams' who are getting blasted for thier non-creative approach to expressing oneself, well all i have to say is f@ck all of you who pass judgement on us, maybe the symbol is an unimaginative way for you to express yourself, but it's a lot more for me, i 've wanted one before it was 'coll' to get one, but i won't let that deter me from eventually getting one, it was unigue 13 yrs ago, i emblazoned the symbol on the backs of all my shirts back then and it reminds me of where i once was, and where i am today, i'm no jw, but i too have had a spiritual awakening as prince did, and thus our bond is as strong as ever.....
i no longer go by the name of victor.....
