according to music&media and some others TGE sold 1.2 milions worldwide including over 500k in the US market. U consider it a flop....? Come on...It's good.

And it sold that WITHOUT giving out 2, 3, 4, 5 or even 6 copies to 1 family.

The Gold Experience was Prince's comeback. I wish the media figured that out.

Stupid media! doh!

I could never understand how it was considered a flop either. Two of my favorite CD's are GE and Chaos and Disorder. Neither one did well but I wonder what sales are like on those within the last 3-4 months???? I bet he's sold quite a few copies of Chaos and he would GE, too, if it were still available. For me, they're both rocking.

GE & C&D are two of my favorites! biggrin

eek Thats gonna be in my top 5 of the worst prince albums

When are you people going to learn that US sales are not the only sales? There are worldwide sales and the album sold about one million copies all in all. An album that sells ONE MILLION copies is not a goddamn flop.

But aside from that it was the record that was released during his WB battle years, things were pretty nasty between the both parties at the time. Remember the magazine advertisement (was it in Rolling Stone? I think it was) WB put out to "promote" The Gold Experience? Nobody was doing the work to get this album to sell, the release was just a contractual obligation. And the Warners even held the album on shelves for almost two years before it finally came out.

The Gold Experience would have been a massive hit (possibly to the level of Diamonds & Pearls - ie 6 million) if:

a) It was released in 1994 on the back of the smash success of the single TMBGITW (No 1 all around the world and No 3 in USA)

b) Prince had then done a proper world tour in support of the album

By late 1995 the general public were confused and losing interest. In 1994 a year after he changed his name to prince the first album released was Come by Prince which had little promotion! It didn't even include TMBGITW from a few months earlier? The general public thought WTF. By the time TGE was released it was just too late, the moment had passed and neither Prince or WB were interested PLUS people were getting pissed off with a multi millionaire walking around with Slave written on his face!

Well, I'm sorry...

You go watch Prince play live this year and what's he gonna play? 'Dolphin' or 'The One'?

When I saw him, he played neither. He did play "Shhh" both times I saw him. He played "Dolphin" AND "The One" at several of the aftershows on the ONA tour. Your argument doesn't hold water. Besides, why does which songs he's playing make for a justification of the albums merit artistically?? If that's the case, then TGE wins due to the fact that he played TMBGITW for four tours in a row. Still, he plays "The One", but what other songs will he wind up playing from NPS?? I kinda doubt will be hearing "Push It Up" or "When U Love Somebody" anytime soon (at least, I pray to God we won't).

You like NPS, I think its craptacular. You hate TGE, I think its easily one of his best albums.Different opinions. Its that simple.

Jay,I totally agree! Prince should have NEVER released 'Come' (an overall weak project).Instead,in the summer of 1994,he should have released 'TGE' when these songs were still new and fresh. In addition, the CD should have included strong songs such as "Days Of Wild","Ripopgodazippa" and "Hide The Bone" (which would have been a killer lead-off single). In summer 1994,this album would have been a massive hit, especially coming just a few months after the recent Top 10 hit single "TMBGITW".Instead, the CD came out in late 1995,too late to really make much of an impact.By that time,he and many of his fans (many of whom had been listening to these songs on bootleg for over a year) had lost interest.Another missed opportunity.

Prince wanted to release TGE back in summer 1994 but Warners wouldn't allow it, as he wanted to release Come and TGE practically together, and they were worried about saturating the market. I guess they should have released TGE before Come ideally. I read they wanted The Most Beautiful Girl to be put on Come to tap into that success but Prince refused, plus they wanted other songs from TGE to be put on Come - in other words, if Prince had backed down and amalgamated Come and TGE into a single album and released it in summer 1994 it might have been a mega hit.

William Shatner to release new album

William Shatner has recorded a new album featuring a guest appearance by US punk legend Henry Rollins.

Shatner, who played Captain James T Kirk in the original TV series of Star Trek, has also enlisted Joe Jackson and US country star Brad Paisley to guest on the album.

The album will be produced by Ben Folds, leader of the Ben Folds Five, reports the New York Post.

Shatner is generally acknowledged as having recorded the worst ever version of a Beatles' song.

He released his spoken word cover of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds in 1968.

I once had a single with Captain Kirk's Disco Trek. (NOT with William Shatner, though.) I wonder why I don't have it anymore? confuse

You ever seen the film 'Conspiracy Theory' with Mel Gibson? Where he plays a brainwashed government assassin. He feels compelled to buy a certain book everytime he sees it, though he doesn't know why.

It turns out to be a way to keep track of him.

I'd be worried if I was you...

I've read in these forums that THE GOLD EXPERIENCE didn't sell. Does anyone know an estimated amount of what it did sell? My best friend's mom is in love with "Pussy Control" It's so funny to hear her boyfriend sing it because he's Mexican and he doesn't know a lot of English yet and it just sounds weird with him singing it.

ANYWAYS.... I never would've thought it wouldn't sell, Pussy Control is one of my favorite songs by him (although I only have 6 cds by him) and I just saw a video for Gold and that is really good too.

This is a Bad a$# album it didnt sell much because it didnt have the promotion of Warner Bros. and during the fall out with them!!!!

Opinions are like assholes, etc., but someone not liking The Gold Experience is like someone not enjoying an orgasm. I would hope they'd give their copies away (and give up sex, completely). If their taste really is THAT bad, why should they even own such a wonderful disc?!?
