Do you think prince is a "great" vocalist? or just okay?

i think he is just by all the different tones and ranges he can do seemingly effortlessly. i didnt think he was until the early 90's when u would hear him do so many styles...
It's better to have and not need, than to need and not have!

This shouldn't even be a question if you've witnessed him perform live... especially at his One Nite Alone concert. He was un-freakin'-believable!!!

LoL... BNatural, I looked at your profile and upon first glance I thought you were in costume...lol. The album on the wall blended with your hair and, well, I thought it was a funky hat. smile Nice pic, btw...

I think he is an amazing vocalist. So many styles and ranges...and with him, you can feel him sing. Whether it's attitude he's throwing at ya or singing from his heart...it's all felt, and I think that makes a huge difference in the vocals..he means what he's singing at the time...he does it with feeling. There are many other great vocalists out there, but a lot of the time it seems like they're singing just to be heard and not really feelin' it at all.

Well, I would say he will go down as one of best male vox. He should go down for the best falcetto (however you spell it). No questions asked.

He will always be forgotten for the simple reason that he is not known for just one thing. When you are diversified people are not able to recognise him for one trait.

I do think Prince is a great vocalist. I especially like how he uses his vocals in a studio where the harmonies and sounds are multi-layered. Not only can he hit a wide range of notes, but he will often alter the style and texture of his voice so that it resembles the sounds of a whole group of people in a band singing instead of just one man.

Songs like "Forever in My Life, Tamborine, Pink Cashmere, and Adore are all great songs that best show case breadth and depth of his vocal abilities.

If anyone needs further proof that Prince is a great vocalist, just have them go talk to D'Angelo and Maxwell. smile

I must agree with the rest... vocals are ingenious. I remember sometime back where Prince mentioned that he really did not like his deep voice, he really has mastered versatility in the vocal range. With many artist in the past as well as today... their versatility is minimized and if they do not put on some great performance... their appeal seemingly disappears. For example... a great vocalist (my opinion) would be Maxwell, he sings absolutely beautifully... he can change his voice up some, whether it be beautifully high or low toned, but where else does his talent reside? He does seem to sing with profound emotion, just as MTV Unplugged "This Women's Work", just to see him sing it I can almost cry... but it not his music. As for Prince... he creates what he sings, most of his music is about much of his life or what he may be going through during a particular moment. Seeing him perform live is the perfect illustration to how he presents his music... he clearly defines the purpose of each and every song he chooses to sing... through every possible statement his body is capable of releasing... it seems to be endless. smile When he feels love... he sings with love, when he feels pain... he sings with pain, when he has issues smile... we hear it...when he feels nasty... well... we all know what he is capable on stage... but it all is protrayed with the help of his "Great" vocal range. No one in my opinion can be anymore talented muscially... who the heck can do it all and do it DAMN well. Simple FACTS... he has nothing to prove anymore in my opinion... he just needs to be appreciated for what he chooses to give. Enough said. smile

I think Prince is an amazing vocalist. His wide range from bass to falsetto, the depth of emotions, strength, etc. are all primo.
It's like Stevie in that you KNOW he's feels what he's singing. It's not just another song. His heart is all up in there, too.
Is Prince a great vocalist? A resounding "Yes!''

He is definately a great vocalist. His falcetto is perfect imho.

He certainly conveys emotion better than most and that makes it more appealing.

I'm just adding my immediate thoughts before I read through what everyone else has posted. I don't want to be swayed by something already said.

I think Prince's falsetto is heavenly, other worldly. He has a range. It fits his songs perfectly, the ones he chose to use his falsetto on.

His "normal" lower singing range. I do not think it's that good of a voice. It seems rather forced and nasally.I like male voices like Luther Vandross, Steve Perry, James Taylor, Donny Hathaway,Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Maurice White, and I'm sure there's many more. This is just my own preference in what I would call strong, powerful, unique male voices.

Just okay, I think. He's a better musician than a singer, although his falsetto is amazing!

He's okay. Pretty versatile, though sometimes he actually sings off-key. This seems to be intentional (I hope so, cuz otherwise it implies he doesn't know any better). As with the Guitar thread: This is just one facet of his music and I don't come to Prince for just his vocal or guitar chops.

The Absolute Best....Listen to any other singer, and try and find

one with the range of Prince.

Male or Female.....doesn't matter.....You may say Maria

Carrie can get higher, with that "injured puppy" sqeal, but

can she get as low....I don't think so!

Prince has the widest range. high to low, and he knows how

to use it all.

But Prince's range is not high when it comes to singing without falsete. I agree he is very versatile and that he has a amazing range. But there are tons of singers that sing higher than him when it comes to normal voice. I think that Terence D'arby, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson are better singers. Well, at least MJ was, but now it seem he lost his voice. razz

IMO, he has an incredible range....just listen to ´For You´, ´The Most beautiful girl´ and ´Damn U´. He has a great techinique, but IMO he chooses not to use it. For example: in ´She loves me for me´ I always have the impression that his voice is failing...
I prefer his normal voice over his falsettos.

He is undoubtedly one of the greatest vocalists of our time - but as with many of his attributes it is devalued by the sheer breadth of his talent in other areas. I agree with those who have said it is his range and the emotion that he puts into performances that make him great; certainly his "normal" voice doesn't have the effortless beauty and power of TTD, Stevie, MJ, or Marvin. They are blessed with having voices that convey strong emotion with sound alone. Prince relies a lot on phrasing and range, but that's not to say the results are anything short of great.

I totally agree with you. Well said I always wonder why Pink cashmere isn't more appreciated for it's complexity and melding of vocal and instrumental styling.
