I'm sick of Prince!

All he does is dis other artist in interviews. Is this guy suffering from some type of pop mid life crises or what?

"All todays music is done by computers" as if I am the only live musicain left...Oh Please!!!

Can someone tell him about the roots! And other groups who take the studio music and perform it with live bands while touring?!

Everyone is trying to save money on recording budjects. Noone is bringing a live orchestry in th studio anymore. Technology and the world is moving forward! Change with the times. Even if you use computers to record your music you still have to know music to put it all together. No one is making music that a computer creates. The computer is a tool and in some cases a instrument that is used to create music. You still have to understand song structure. chord progressions, melody, arrangment, lyric writting, and vocaly perform the song!

Are not writters and singers musicians?

I really used to dig the guy, but he has changed for the worst. The shameless self promotion and dissing something new, just reaks of everything he used to hate.

I agree with you about computers being a tool too, for the artistic.

You have to read between the lines with what Prince says, maybe when he's talking about computers vs live, he's talking about the people who can't sing for shit, but have their vocals re-tootled in the studio, and the padding of a whole team of backing singers, or live tours, acts who mime the whole thing (which I'm not knocking, you can't do a whole show of energetic dance routines AND sing live).

There's some fantastic music made with computers and such, not a traditional instrument in sight - it's not a bad thing.

We all know Prince changes his stuff all the time, this is where he is now, he'll be somewhere else with the next project.

If you think about it, it's actually quite an exciting time to be a Prince fan. It seems like he's coming out of his down period, he was hungry for commercial success again, and after a couple of false starts (Emancipation, Rave), he's done pretty well this time around.

So where does he go now? I don't think Prince is the kind of artist who wants to sit on his ass and belt out another Musicology, even if he did, that wouldn't be him forever - knocking out schmaltzy crooner ballads like Call My Name. He'll want to shake it up before long.

We don't know what's coming next, and right now, he's in the most interesting position for a long time - lap it up. You're not sick of Prince, you're just not digging his current little fad.

I've said before that Prince is like the weather...if you don't like the way things are right now, just wait a while and I guarantee things will change! lol At worst, he always keeps things interesting cuz u never know the next tangent (musically and/or personally) he'll be off on! woot!

I see your point. I think stylisticly he'll change, but I think he "save the music crusade"
is just overlown and another topic to create a buzz about him. I dont buy into it.

He himself was a poineer with inovative computer technology. I just think he flip flops alot on issues to cret a BUZZZZZ.

Fact is, his music aint had the same inovativeness and passion since LS. Different, unique but not on the same level as his earliar work.

I just dont see the difference between him and other artist who use non issues to generate press and attention. "Hmm Lets see..this album sucks so, I need a cause to create some energy behind it..hmmm I know....Its Might Mouse..Here I come to save the musical Dayyyyy!!!"

I don't know about "cretting a buzz," but here's a point that you miss: Yes, Prince was a "pioneer with innovative computer technology," but after he had become proficient with, or mastered, several instruments and the craft of songwriting.

He's talking about people who don't play instruments, have not studied music or songwriting craft, but buy a copy of Acid Pro and fancy themselves musicians.

Thats a good point. But why does he have to dis them. Like openly talking about teaching Beyounce scales...haha that was a outright backslap!

Just listen to his interviews closly. He really has a disdain for anyone other that himself or people who praise him. I just think he is on a misson to promote himself while putting down others. Why cant he just lead by example?

you know what, i'll take a nibble at the worm on the hook...

for someone who gives off a vibe of wanting to take the high road, i find it puzzlingly classless when P throws shade at other artists in interviews...like when he said he didn't like the foo fighters' cover of "darling nikki" and told 'em to write their own songs (they got a million of 'em, princey - they're all different, ya know!), and when he said he'd like to shoot people in the head who record cover versions of his songs (so can cheryl crow, joan osbourne, shania twain, sly stone, the estate of jimi hendrix, joni mitchell, carlos santana, etc. etc. etc. form a purple paisley firing squad then???)....

...and, i mean, even when his criticisms are dead-on, it seems to me that a TRUE artist should be supportive of other people working in the craft, even if they're not performing quite up to his standards. lift 'em up, don't knock 'em down.

i try to ignore this kinda mess when i read interviews with the man, but yeah - it bugs me.

Remember this dis comes from a guy who brought us the drum machine and computers to make music. I think he's really saying "Let's not ONLY use computers to make music...use computers as a tool like anything else" Which is true.

And you do have a valid point of it costs money to get musicians (If you are solo) and studio out an album with live music. One needs to note even though he had a band...he did not pay them very well. Also music has gone by the way of electronic music...it has changed and grown...and HE IS A BIG PART OF THAT. Which also frustrates me. He says Make music....I want to inspire etc etc. But only if it's not electronic music.

Music is free flowing. Water rushing Birds chirping, that person talking in the next cube over...it's all music to me.

I think that's what he is trying to say. You are correct these acts can't sing can't play...don't even write their stuff. Hell, even a puter will correct the pitch of their crappy voices...all to make a product to sell. And electronic music is NOT a bad thing. Wonder if he's ever heard of Sphongle...got more going on in one song than most do on an album.

And alas it comes to this...Prince is very Hypocritical when it comes to things he says. Hates foo fighters loves Beyonce...though I love her, is FAR from original. Perhaps I am wrong, but she doesn't seem like the type that is an artist and certainly is more of a singer than Musician.

Logically. Prince is throwing in so many conflicting things it is puzzling.

To me, his best music EVER stems from the time he dabbled with so-called computers. He forgot about the LYNN drum computer, even now we worship it while he recyles old James Brown hooks. He does it well, but still.

Prince should concentrate on making music that sounds fresh in 20 years time, like when he did while squeezing the Lynn computer. BLEEP his view on how other artists honour him by playing his songs, even while he does not dig the lewd things he has done in the past.

For someone who said he still digs what he did back then cuz he had a journey to follow, he is WAAAAY inconsiderate for those still traveling.

He's only telling the truth so don't get mad at him. You are right about the roots and and very few other artist out here today and if you listen to him in the interviews, he acknowledges some of these artist, but on a whole he's right and that's all there is to it. Most of these folks can't sing, play, write their name or nothin' but they are only getting a record contract because they appeal to the younger audience.

If the music industry would recruit some real talent and leave this bulls--- alone then he wouldn't have to say the stuff that he's been saying.

He does have a point... if you listen to the radio, most singers are "packaged pop," no style, no performing skills, just lip-synchers.

Although he's not the only musician out there (I saw Cameo & the Ohio Players the other night, and these bands rocked!), he is the most popular musician out right now. He is the hottest selling ticket for summer tours. Why aren't all the other musicians selling like he is? One word: Marketing.

Real musicians are last on the totem pole of who the industry wants to promote to the top. It's kinda cool that Prince is doing it alone.

In all honesty, he is the one of the last of a dying breed... a real musician. Not too many people out there can do what he does, and play all the instruments like he can.

Motown was a factory. Didn't stop Prince from playing Just My Imagination. Common. Music is business. Business is what made Prince BIG. Stop complaining and offer us something the record companies cannot refuse, like good music for a good price.

Again, in Holland the prices are kept artificially high by kartels. Screw the record co's. Download is heaven.

I do think Prince bitches too much about this. He may use less computers, but his music sucks. Maybe when he makes good music again, then he can properly complain about what others do.

I agree with the one who started this post, but I am not sick of PRINCE in anyway! I just hate that he never mentions other artists that are keeping TRUE MUSIC ALIVE! What about Norah, and Fiona and John Mayer. He just ignores them. Then I think: oh, he doesn't have to talk to the NORAHS, and the FIONAS and the JOHNS because they get it! They all ready know what is real music and what is just crap! Prince is being extra-obsessive with this topic because he is trying to tell B.E.T LAND that the music they play sucks and is trash and it makes the BET audience look like stupid bums who only understand songs with slang!

i'm fairly certain he said this about foo fighters, too - i believe it mighta been in the entertainment weekly cover story...though for all i know, i could be mistaken, you could be right on the money, or we could both be right. smile

and as for the computer bizness, prince really needs to reconsider the arrangement of "when doves cry" on the musicology tour if the lady's gonna be protestin' too much about computers in music an' shit.

Come on you lot, when he "disses" music being made by computers this is just a generalisation aimed at current top 40 artists. He is obviously not referring to everyone. Dont take things so literally.

Yes, there are other great bands oput there but by in large they are not having top 40 hits either. The top 40 is dominated by lame programmed R&B music with no soul.

It is rare to hear a good song on the radio these days. The current state of popular music, at least as far as radio play is concerned , is appalling.

Thus, he is just making an accurate generalisation. Jeepers.

I understand what your saying and its true to an extent. What did Marvin, James Brown and many otthers sound like in there twenties? I just think the new artist need some slack. Give them time to grow.

I can see Prince making that point but he continually harps on it to have the reverse effect of promoting himself. Your right about the state of music, I just dont dig the vide Prince gives off these days. It just seems preachy, hypocritical and condesending.

I'm sure James and George took him under thr wing when he was comming up.
Thats something no one talks about. Yes P was talented, but he also was surrounded by some of the greatest musicians in the biz to school, and push him. Why cant he do the same instead of dissing everyone?

I know he is generalizing in his comments but, do you ever see him give props to anyone?
Name anyone he gives it up to? Aside from his ass kissers...Alicia etc....

I just think the guy is full of himself. If he wants to attract a younger generation this is not the way to do it. Make some marketable, cool music and then someone will listen. Honestly would you rather party to Get Low, Yeah, Dip it low or the repetative dated Musicology?

Whick is not original, its a JB Ripoff? So where is his current creativity? Life O tha Party?..... barf
