Wow this all turned into a vegan vegetarian pizza with whitefish topic!

Prince = Vegan...report of him eating meat! Stop the press! Dang makes it sound like he went to McDonalds or something. He never eve changes his mind???? rolleyes

Does anyone here find it odd that there was an after party with only a DOZEN in attendance or why Prince was brooding...or being alone?

That's one of the things that is really bothering me in this thread - all these "he changed his mind" comments. Veganism is NOT that casual!!!! It should NEVER be treated as such. A person who decides that they're sick of being blonde, so they dye their hair dark is changing their mind. Turning your back on a lifestyle based on living in accordance to your ethics is pretty major.

What's riling me up so much in this thread is not necessarily the fact that Prince may or may not have eaten fish. What bothers me is the casual attitude taken towards something that should be treated with great respect.

I can't tell you how many nights I've stayed up crying because of some horrible incident of animal abuse that I read in the news or saw on tv. I've worked first hand with animals who have been tortured beyond belief - it's what made me go vegan. It's the most important thing in the world to me, and I'm not alone. Most of my vegan friends feel the same way. For someone to treat it like it's just a phase to grow out of - it just makes my heart sink. My veganism is rarely taken seriously by anyone other than my family and my vegan friends. No one should be waiting for me to "get over it" or "change my mind". If I ever do turn my back on veganism, I would hope that people would take it seriously and not just take the attitude that I grew bored with it.

hmm Uhh, c'mon people!!! As for the fish dinner, this is just one report from a gossip column, and you're trashing him over it?!

As for the pizza thing (Prince had a pizza deliverd to him onstage in Chicago on 24 July, then shared it with fans), I dug up the original NPGMC post and it clearly stated it was a VEGGIE pizza. Not PC if you're trying to be Vegan, but no meat either...

chill pill

thank u. Candace. Thumbs up on you thread lol

Everyone is getting on P like they watched him eat. He could have ordered this 4 one of the NPG members.

i'm not saying that being a vegan isn't diet that can't be sustained. i said that my friend's doctor told him that it was affecting his health. now perhaps the doctor didn't know enough to recommend how my friend could have done better for himself, but he has some health issues that the doctor was concerned about. so that was just his recommendation. but i do support the idea that everyone's body is different. there could be a whole lot of reasons as to why he turned away from it than just some kind of weakness. though of course, maybe he did just one day decide to switch back.

i wasn't trying to suggest that veganism isn't serious. however, i also think that it is a much harder thing to do for some people than they might realize. it requires a lot more research than most people realize to be truly vegan. i'd be more curious as to why he decided to turn away from veganism than anything. not trying to attack your belief. i'm sure your feelings are stronger on the subject.

Thanks for that. biggrin

oh certainly! a lot of my friends are vegan. i just haven't brought myself to be able to give that kind of dedication. if i ever did it, i'd probably not tell anyone for a long time for fear of screwing it up. i definitely admire those that understand what it means to be vegan and are able to follow it. i've caught people that claim to be, and aren't even aware that they are violating it with gelatin caplets on vitamins and things like that.

You need to chill out. I NEVER called you stupid. I was simply regurgitating what you said. I never called ANYONE stupid. I'm sorry if my pointing out the truth offends you.

Overpopulation: If we don't eat cows, there's no reason for them to be here. They'll die out, which would be a hell of a lot better than keeping them here just for the sake of torturing them.

And sorry, but animals don't have malice. I can't believe someone would actually come out and say that. You should probably re-consider your words if you want anyone to take any of your words to heart.

You are coming off as severely misguided, disrespectful, and self-important. For you to accuse me of calling anyone stupid or to say that I have malice in my heart - when all I did was speak the truth - just proves that you have a lot to learn.

That's all I'm going to say to you for now, as I hardly deserve the response you gave me.
[This message was edited Mon Aug 9 12:20:11 2004 by kellyann22]

First, you reply to my post with snide remarks and now you have the mind-set to say I'm disrespectful and misguided. If you have something against you're neighbor than you do have malice in your heart. Does that make you a bad person? No, not at all. It's an emotion. Where did I imply self-importance in that post? All of that is common knowledge and never once did I say, "Because I feel this way, it's right." What mortal being can say what's right and wrong? If you believe that animals have no ability to feel anger, malice, or any other emotion, than that's what you believe. But, I've seen differently having worked with our beautiful, four-legged brethren that they feel just as much as any human. They hurt. They cry. They get depressed. They remember those who do them wrong, and they show anger towards them. You speak no more truth than I do and learning is something that everyone should continue to do, no matter how much that person may think they know about something. Cows would still exist regardless of whether people ate them or not. Just like I believe that roaches will be here long after all mankind has died out. Even though they are gross, they have a reason for being here. Without cows, the world would become overgrown with plant life. Herbivores control the growth of fauna, just like a lawnmower, except cuter and not as noisy. I apologize to you. Like I said, I was not trying to down you're spiritual beliefs. I get offended when people make it seem like animals are emotion-less beings that were just put here to look at. It hurts my feelings.

true. i guess if you are famous, you aint ever allowed to change you mind.

one of my best friends was vegan for a good while, but his doctor said he wasn't getting as much of certain things as he would incorporating a bit of meat to his diet. i know some people are able to get by just fine, but his doctor was concerned enough about what he wasn't getting to recommend it. everyone's body is different and processes certain vitamins and nutrients in varying ways. who knows what the deal was with prince. but yeah, dude is a fuckin gemini. why should this be surprising?

sure its a contradiction, but does have to write a song about it as an apology to his fans?

as far as being disappointed, who really gives a fuck what prince eats?

Not true. I know tons of vegans. I've done years of research on it. There are maybe a handful of people out there who can't be 100% healthy on a vegan diet.

But the problem is that you can be a vegetarian and have a poor diet, by sticking to some favorites. I also have a friend who had serious health problems caused in part by her vegetarian diet.

"Telling"???? Please. I don't even have any idea what you're referring to, so you can hardly say that you're able to jump to some kind of conclusion about me for not defending his religious beliefs. For your information, I think it's wrong to come down on anyone's beliefs, assuming that their beliefs don't involve hurting someone. I have never once said a single thing on this site which knocks JWs or any other religious group.

Sorry, but the two are completely unrelated. Are you saying that before I ever again defend veganism as something that should be treated with respect, I should first search for a post or a thread attacking Prince's religious beliefs, so that I can defend them? That makes absolutely no sense.

Oh, absolutely. Anyone can be unhealthy. I can be a vegan but only live on pop and potato chips - I don't think I'd last very long! lol

Just like people who eat fast food all the time.

I do recognize that there are a few things that my vegan diet excludes that CAN be healthy, if they're not poisoned.

All diets, meat-inclusive or otherwise, need to be carefully examined in order to ensure optimum health.

If I ever do turn my back on veganism, I would hope that people would take it seriously and not just take the attitude that I grew bored with it.

I'm quoting the above again, because it seems that I've been more outspoken than just about anyone on this subject, and therefore, I feel that a lot of these "who gives a shit what Prince does" comments are directed at me.

May I remind you that the issue for me is not about what Prince does in his personal life. The fact that there's even SPECULATION about Prince eating fish upsets me. It bothers me because people place way too much importance on celebrities. When Drew Barrymore renounced her veganism, I heard so many comments about how veganism is just a "phase", how it's completely "open for interpretation", etc. Some of you may hold certain beliefs that are extremely precious to you - beliefs that are also mocked by many people that you come into contact with every day. Speculation like this just fuels that attitude.

Most people that I meet that don't know much about veganism assume that it's a temporary thing. I find that incredibly offensive. I'm not going around telling people that they're wrong for eating meat, so why should anyone try to make me feel like my beliefs are not valid? I guess I'm just more upset that a lot of people here don't seem to want to understand why this news is so aggrevating for a vegan to hear. Perhaps you should try to put yourself in someone else's shoes for a moment.

As CandaceS mentioned, this could very well be speculation; the fish might have been for someone else. If that's the case, than Prince is completely undeserving of any eye-rolling that I've directed at him. The speculation itself, however, is enough to piss me off. Even if it's not anyone's fault (How is the reporter supposed to know that he's a vegetarian??), it's just unfortunate. It just keeps that whole "are you still doing that vegan thing" attitude flourishing.

No, I'm not and I haven't said ONE offensive thing yet. All I've done is try to encourage people to understand why this attitude is so troubling. Have I once in this entire thread said that people who eat meat are wrong? No. I respect other people's beliefs and I expect people to respect mine. I was naturally bothered by Estelle for putting words in my mouth, and I took offense to Supernova's closed minded comments, but that's it.

I thought more people knew what it was like to constantly have their most passionate beliefs constantly mocked. I guess not.
