not really, if there was no movie would the album had been as popular?? The movie was not that great, and Prince's acting was right up there with Mariah's..

At the time I distinctly remember at least one dj saying the album went platinum on its first day of release. And when the single was released prior to the album it only took about a month to hit #1.

It would have been a big album without the movie. How big? That's speculation. But the movie would have gone nowhere without the album to power it. In the end both helped each other.

I know you basically said it first but Supernova elaborated so well about the success of the album and single before the movie ever opened.

I may be mistaken but wasn't the album #1 before the movie was released?

i can't remember.

I do think the movie helped it stay #1 for so long. I don't think the song Purple rain would've been released as a single if it wasn't for the movie scene. But let's go Crazy and When Doves Cry would've been #1 regardless.

AND YOU KNOW HOW THE MOVIE STARTED, THE MIDDLE AND THE END BY JUST LISTENING TO THE ALBUM, BUT WHEN I SAW IT THE FIRST DAY IT CAME OUT I WAS IN HEAVEN lol
THE ALBUM DID NOT NEED THE MOVIE. PRINCE WAS ON FIRE, THE TIME WAS HOT, AND APPOLONIA 6 WITH SEX SHOOTER WAS THE ICING ON THE CAKE FOR PRINCE THAT YEAR!
I'M NOT SHOUTING, JEEZ!
