if i had to pick ONE song to take off PR...and we're talkin' gun to the head, pet kitten dangled over a vat of corrosive acid, dire consequence situation here...i'd choose "i would die 4 u"...now, i don't dislike the song at all, and if it were the 12" jam w/ sheila that goes on and on and on i might feel differently cuz i LOOOOVE that recording...but the studio version, eh, i dunno...there's something kinda BLAH about it, and even when i would play PR a dozen times a day back when it first came out, i always thought of it as the song i hadda slog through to get to "baby i'm a star". so, uh, THERE.

aw, i thought apples held her own in "take me with u". i dig that song anyway. it's such a bouncy, hippie-dippie song. i don't think i've ever heard a version live that does justice to the version on record...though i do dig the live clip that was released as the video. | |

Seriously, the only reason those albums don't have a pop feel is because they weren't nearly as big. What, an album being a big hit means it's lesser artistically than those that weren't? Not necessarily. Some people either forget their reactions to the PR album when it was new, or don't have that context because they either weren't around or were too young to be cognizant of its impact. Prince was just one of those artists that could be simultaneously avant garde (when talking about pop/rock music), and commercial. Points shouldn't be taken away because of it, if anything he should score higher because of it. The same way some people don't understand the impact of albums like Are You Experienced, or What's Going On. And before anybody has a knee jerk reaction, I'm not saying it's the equal of those albums, it's analogy. The only thing PR suffers from is constant radio saturation. It would be VERY interesting to find out how many hardcore music fans are still in love with albums that had about 5 top 40 hits. Familiarity breeds contempt, and all. Had it been a bootleg and never been released, it would be regarded as the Holy Grail of Prince boots. It's easy to deny that NOW, since it was never an unreleased boot.
