Prince's Hohner guitar... Does anyone know any 'trade secrets' about how Prince has kept that ONE guitar, his Fender Telecaster copy Hohner guitar, which is infamous, in such pristine condition??? I suppose this post really belongs somewhere else, but thought I'd give it a whirl. I know that this was one of his early guitars...so, we'll say it's at LEAST 22 years old, since, off the top of my head, I KNOW he used it to record 1999, but am not positive of anything before that time. So, a 22 year old guitar, used frequently in LIVE playing situations....and yet, there's a big ol' close up of it on the liner booklet for the ONA disc set, and it looks PERFECT! It looks practically NEW! Is this just a bunch of refinishing/refretting/hardware replacement jobs? Or...something else? I saw him use it on his current tour right now, and was just wondering if anyone out there has some inside information on how a 22 year old guitar can look brand new after it's been played extensively it's entire Prince life.

i'd be willing to bet that over the years, he's bought several of that model and it's probably a sentimental choice and it looks a lot more comfortable to handle than, say, the glyph guitars or the angel cloud models. just my guess.

It would kinda be a shame if he does have a few which sounds probable, would have be better IMO if he just let the original wear naturally maybes just replacing the odd part e.g pick-ups. I like a guitars past to show on it ,the little wears and knocks tell a story. Then again it may be that he takes pretty good care of it,though we've seen him throwing it about so who knows.

on a few pics you can see two of them just a difference are on the head shape!!
the hohner trademark is silver on one and black on the other look at the gallery on instrument page you can see that!!!

I always thought the Hohner look the least comfortable of the three, the cloud being the most comfortable due to it's contoured shape and smaller body design where as the Hohner is larger and more boxy and probably heavier. The glyph just looks uncomfy due to the large cross section. Tonally, the Hohner is far superior then any other guitar out there. Period. I suppose I'm banned now? It's probably a sentimental thing going on there, from back in the day. Like I have a Stratocaster, and it ties me to the past! The 70's (Jimi Hendrix, Ernie Isley etc.)

By all accounts he bought the Hohner from some guy for some ridiculous amount like 50 bucks or sumtin' back in the day after seeing it hanging on the wall of his grotty little shop.
It would not surprise me in the slightest if he keeps the original at Paisley for recording sessions etc and takes copies out on the road - as the punishment he puts his guitars through.... well... check this out 4 example: (Gallery image #2581 not found!) I rest my case!

As this photo shows, he has several copies of the same guitar, that's why it never seems to age! Where the original is or whether he still plays it, who can tell?
Sorry, Banana, not sure how you're supposed to do the thumbnail to bigger wotsit from the gallery, looked in the FAQs but didn't see it...

I'd still pick Wendy's Rickenbacker over Prince's Hohner.
And I don't care if you call me a hohnerist! NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.
