Prince, Just say NO....NO u can not remake this song!

Which song of the Great One do you wish he had never allowed what singer to remake?

Private Joy by LaToya Jackson!

If you can actually believe this, Prince or any Artist has no say in who covers thier song. Copyright law. But you are allowed to approve or disaprove of samples. Prince gave Ginuine a lot of crap covering "When Doves Cry" n even NPGMC posted that if you know of someone doing a cover of a Prince song to let them know.

As for him giving Paula Abdul a song, don;t think he cared about it at the time. he wrote U in 1979 for the aborted "Rebels" album so he was thinking, o.k. let's give er this crappy song n get a lil bit of money on it.

What's even more awful is when someone does a Prince cover -like G- or Alicia and has a bit of a hit with the song. And then all those dumb fcks come up 2 U and say 'oh this is such a wonderful song'. At which I reply 'well, duhhhh, the song is about 10 years old. It's a prince tune dude'.

And then they keep claiming that Prince couldn't have written the song since G or Alicia is singing it.

I even played a friend of mine 'How Come U Don't...." and showed him the credits on 'The Hits/The B-Sides' and he still thinks the songs is an Alicia Key's original.

Some people should B slapped silly 4 such comments. Than again, some people have potnoodles 4 brains.

There are many but LEANN RIMES "Purple Rain" takes the cake for me....I vowed to slap her silly if I am ever to meet her.

Others that made me cringe...

"When Doves Cry"-Ginuwine
"Beautiful Ones"-Mariah & Dru Hill
"I Could Never Take The Place..."-Jordan Knight
"The Glamorous Life"-Edens Crush

Thanks Loco - the first time I heard Slave 4 U I thought it sounded very Prince-y! You've just confirmed my suspicions!

Good thread by the way - people really do think that they can make a hit because it's a P original! Most of them are things P has shelved years ago because he knows they're not his best!

As an artist who loves prince, I can say that it is a lot of fun to arrange his songs. I did Purple Rain as an experiment really to see if what I heard about that organ part was true. Yes it is an essential ellement as the song sounds weird without it.

I think Prince allows people to arrange his songs so they can recieve the same thing I did. I learned a lot from my preparation for the recording of Purple Rain.

When a band covers a song, they just learn it & play it but when you arrange it, you have to pull the song appart & explore each element & the part it plays in the song so you can change & adapt to suit.

This opinion is especially true of Alicia Keys as i know he digs her stuff & probably let her arrange HCUDCMA so she would learn from the structure of his version & because it was probably interesting to hear someone elses take on his song. Though I do personally prefere Bilal's version to Alcia's.

Anyway, thats why I think its ok for him to allow people to cover his songs.

But thats just me wink

God bless

I was not at all fond of Ginuwine's 'When Doves Cry' remake, and I honestly don't care for any of TLC's remakes of Prince-penned songs.

HOWEVER...

I really liked Jordan Knight's version of 'ICNTTPOYM'. I don't like Prince's version (to the extent that I would probably have left it in the vault), and I always felt it would have been better as a ballad. In my humble opinion, Jordan proved my theory correct.

Then again, I am one of the few Prince fans who seems to prefer Sinead O'Connor's version of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' to any other version I have heard (and I own The Hits/The B-Sides and The Family).
