And exactly how do you fit your whole price library on a 3" CD? And how do you have custom play lists on that CD? I have 2018 songs on my iPod. I can play them by artist, by album, by any custom playlist I set up on my computer, by any automatic playlist I set up (like 5 star prince songs). Pick my play list and either listen in order or random play. etc. etc. One you have an iPod, you will never want a CD based player.

I can squeeze about 60 songs on one 3" CD if I encode at 32/128 VBR kbps JS. I only ever use the Lame encoder on the highest quality setting which means it takes ages to encode stuff - but it's worth it. I also use an mp3 trimming program to trim silent frames from the beginning and end of albums.

The batteries in my player are just regular rechargeable AAA batteries. Once they fail to charge up any more, I'll just chuck them and buy another couple for £1.00

When friends have shown an interest in listening to something, I just take the disc out of the player, give it them and burn another for myself.

I don't use play lists. I like listening to albums in the order they were originally sequenced.

The whole iPod kerfuffle is just another status symbol thing.

I love my 3" MP3 CD player!!!

How very 1980's of you.... Do you still use the Betamax? Or is it Laserdisc?

I have my entire prince collection with me at all times. And my collection of every other artist I've bought music for. Any album I want is at my fingertips - I can listen to it in the original order if that's what I want. I can my my own best of collections with 100s of songs and listen to that instead of the radio. I never have to stop and swap a disc. I never have to burn a new disc. I listen to my music in iTunes when I'm at my computer, with my iPod when I'm away, and always have my full collection of music with me. I never run into the situation where I spontaneously decided I want to listen to a specific song or album and realize I didn't bring it with me. Like say you're driving along and a red corvette drives by and you want to listen to LRC. I never have to fumble with swapping CDs. It works through my car stereo, with my home stereo, when I'm exercising, etc.

Apple give people a CHOICE! Microsoft has too much power over computers and multi-media. It makes me laugh when people say they don't use Apple because it's proprietary. But yet Micrsoft owns the LARGEST (and most insecure) OS, Office suite, media player, and pretty much owns the PC market.

Apple gives me a choice with EVERYTHING I do. From the iPod in my music, to the every day life use of my computer.

And IF I need to run a PC only program, I can do that on my Mac. You can't run ANY Mac programs with any PC.

I'm sure they COULD make the Ipod run on normal AA batteries or at least some battery you can easily buy over a counter and replace yourself - but I think they don't because when it's performance declines in a few years, faced with the high price of a battery replacement most people will just buy a new generation Ipod. So it's a self replenishing market in a sneaky way.

Do you know how much power a hard drive uses? There is no way you could use AA batteries to run ANY hard drive based player. AA batteries don't last long in FLASH players.

It's NOT a conspiracy by Apple, but a necessity.

How do you quickly scroll through several thousand songs without the iPod's scroll wheel? I've looked at many of the alternative players and that problem always seems to be there. I have over 2000 songs on my iPod and can scroll through them all in a matter of just a couple of seconds on one continuos motion.

I said AA OR SOME OTHER BATTERY. You can get some smaller, easily available batteries that are pretty powerful. Besides, a hard-drive is basically a spinning disc, like a cd, and strangely enough my portable cd player manages to run off 2 AA batteries for hours and hours. The hard-drive of the ipod is very small relative to a pc version so it should be EASIER to spin up than a cd. If they had gone down the solid state memory route, there would have been no spinning parts at all and I would guess it would require less power.

The point with AA batteries is that they are easy to get, you can have rechargeable versions, you can carry some spare with you in case it dies at an inopportune moment. An mp3 player based on this would be much more flexible and you wouldn't have to buy a new one every few years if you looked after it.

The fact is companies DO put in a life span limit with products otherwise they would go out of business eventually. They depend on electronics burning out and forcing you to buy a whole new one rather than making it cheap to repair is all part of the business strategy. I never said it was a conspiracy, it's just a tactic favouring the company rather than the buyer.

1. I have NEVER had mine skip, ever. And I've dropped it several times.

You had your first battery for 2 years and it was fine - at the end of the 2 years was it still lasting 12 hours after a charge? Because after that you say all batteries decline - so that must logically include your 2 year battery unless it was defying the laws of physics. How many hours was it lasting at the end?

If batteries only cost $35, then that is good news and is strangely at odds with most people here who seem to think they are more expensive. Where exactly could we get these $35 batteries? Because that sounds like a fact and I know you wouldn't put forward a fact unless you could verify it. Genuinely, I'm interested to know.

just google "ipod battery"

here's one that came up:
http://eshop.macsales.com...Template=1

$29.95 or $25.95, depends on your model of iPod

I'd rather have one battery that lasts a few years than have to keep fiddling with AAs. I'm sure they got a smaller form factor going the route they did too.

This prooves your ignorance. Yes, a hard drive "spins like a CD", but that is where the simularities end. Check out the link: http://computer.howstuffw...-disk5.htm lol

And Flash drives ARE MORE EXPENSIVE TO PRODUCE. A 40-60 GB FLASH DRIVE would be impossible to sell as it would cost too much. This flash drive for instance is 1GB and it costs $246.57. http://www.provantage.com...opping.htm

At that rate a 40GB HD would cost $9,862.80.

Yep, I don't know about you, but I can aford that. lol

People going from knowing nothing to knowing something is called EDUCATION. How can you learn if you don't ask questions, find out people's opinions?

This is a discussion site. We discuss opinions and SHARE information. I've learnt a lot from reading the posts on this site, even about people's feelings on Ipods, and that knowledge is a good thing, but I would never have found that out without asking questions.

You seem to feel that no one should ask questions unless they already know the answers, which would be pointless.

At the end of the day, you can post information and educate in a civilised way or you can ram it down people's throats going 'ha ha, I know more than you, sucka!' and come across as an arrogant arse. Your choice.

1. If you are running Windows 98/98SE/ME, you really need to upgrade. There are TONS of programs that won't run on anything older than 2000

2. There has NEVER been a known spyware program on OSX. Again, it's just a way to make a $$$ from the ignorant. It's near to impossible in Unix.

…579 are known to affect the Macintosh.
Of those 579
…553 are Microsoft Word macro viruses.
Of the 26 viruses that are left…
…all 26 affect only the classic Mac OS — System 9 and prior.
There are zero known Mac OS X viruses or worms. Source:

You seem to feel that no one should ask questions unless they already know the answers, which would be pointless.

At the end of the day, you can post information and educate in a civilised way or you can ram it down people's throats going 'ha ha, I know more than you, sucka!' and come across as an arrogant arse. Your choice.

You never asked a question. Questions end with a "?". You had a lot of uneducated statements along with your buddy BinaryJustin.

Truth.

That's plain wrong. I thought you liked to get your facts straight?! If you look at my first post I end it with:
Anyone care to comment?
Notice the question mark you say I never used.

I also used question marks at various points in subsequent posts:
at the end of the 2 years was it still lasting 12 hours after a charge?

How many hours was it lasting at the end?

Where exactly could we get these $35 batteries?

I'll admit I didn't put question marks at the end of every sentence, but since I have proved I presented my first post as a general question, everything that followed on from that can be included as part of the discussion of the initial question.

Sounds like YOU are making an uneducated statement.

An alternative to the iPod for portable music is the Rio Karma. The current model has 20GB capacity, and the cheapest I saw it online was $250.

How do you quickly scroll through several thousand songs without the iPod's scroll wheel? I've looked at many of the alternative players and that problem always seems to be there. I have over 2000 songs on my iPod and can scroll through them all in a matter of just a couple of seconds on one continuos motion.

The Rio Karma has a little scroll wheel on the top right corner (think mouse scroll wheel). You can roll it up and down to scroll through menu options and songs. The Karma lets you drill down by Artist, Song Title, or Album (similar to iPod I suppose?), and you can then either scroll through all songs (or artists, or albums), or first choose an alphabet letter, and view only the tracks beginning with that letter.

I don't have a song count for you, but I know I have at least half (> 10GB) filled up, mostly comrpessed with Ogg Vorbis, and I don't have any problems finding the tracks I want to listen to in a reasonable amount of time.
