A lot of people, even on this site, never thought he'd get this type of mainstream attention, record sales, etc. Tho, many don't want to admit it. But it really only takes a major label to put their promotional muscle behind someone - regardless of the quality of the music. This is what a major can do for you.

I know a couple of people who are into a lot of different music (supposedly rolleyes ), who are serious music fans, who were into Prince during his commercial peak (one of them even digs pre-Purple Rain Prince) who stopped keeping up with any of his latest music in eons, who semi-rave about Musicology and how it's one of his best albums in yeeears. shrug Az if.

I thought it would be totally over after "Rave" failed to take off. I was like "Mang, dat's his last chance! Mang, now he ain't ever comin' back. Mang, no way!"

Yeah. I was like that.

I can safetly say 80 percent of people were ranting and raving about how he WOULD NOT sell out areans...WOULD NOT be a chart topper ever again and WOULD NOT be a success. But of course, they wont remember being like that...hmph! oh no, not them.

What charts has Prince topped lately? Unless I'm mistaken a chart topper is the person at the top of the charts, which is number one, right?

Now if he could make a so-called commercial comeback based on the music alone, that would be something to see. Problem with that is the teens who buy the music -- are they savvy enough to know good music when they hear it? I think they go mainly for the glitter -- and to most of them, that comes packaged as someone they find sexually attractive. "Video killed the radio star."

Well, technically you are wrong. There is only one top of the charts, number one. Didn't Musicology peak at number 3? Nothing for Prince to be ashamed of, even though he did have to "cheat" to get there, but it's not a chart topper.

What Prince proved with this entire project is that ANYONE can have a record chart on Billboard. With enough marketing push and visibilty and with enough copies of a record shipped (or included in a ticket price), you can make any record 'successful'. William Hung's record debuted at number 34 for fucks sake. Do you really think the general public decided to make THAT a success?

Not a value judgement about the Musicology record however, since I love it, regardless of its status on useless music charts.

I never doubted it. He's everywhere because of the anniversary of PR, induction to the R&R Hall of Fame, and well done media outreach, not because Musicology is so great or new or whatever. Mind you, I think it's a good album, his best in years actually, but based on the contribution he made during the 80's to pop music, I never doubted he would once again enjoy the considerable popularity he seems to these days.

but has he made a comeback?

is he selling albums outside the concert tour?

im not asking to be an ass but just curious.....cause im not hearing his music or seeing the media whore him out like they seem to be doing that simpson chicks sister..

but then im not the one to be judging all this cause i dont really watch mainstream tv..

so.....can anyone enlighten me?

I'm right there with you. I'm one of those who believe this album is his best in at least a decade, if not longer. I put on today the gym and was still just totally blown away by its, um, hate to say it, Musicology.

But I do think this "comeback" was not much more than one smart business idea about record distribution, plus a massively successful tour. But this doesn't really make him more than a profitable, borderline-oldies act...I don't exactly see the new music reaching new fans. And I seriously doubt he'll get a chance to cut a deal like this again. But all that said, Musicology is a great album, and he's put on a good tour this year, and that's the real important bottom line.
