How many ppl in here never thought Prince would ever come back like this?

i for one always knew he could sell out arenas and such but i never expected the attention he's getting from the media and his retail success this year.
i wonder if anyone in here also thought that he could never regain the 'funk' like he has this year? i admit i have to almost put myself in that category. i'd also like to admit i was wrong.

Prince can be such a media whore when he feels like it.

That's what this is all about; if he feels like it. This 'comeback' is all strategically planned to push his new album. He thinks he has sumthing relevant to share with all of us.

Fun that the innovative guy from the past evolved into a man that uses James Brown licks and commerce to get back into the MAIN public's view.

I just sit back and enjoy the music that flows from the Park...or where ever he records these days. At least the focal point shifted back to MUSIC instead of MESSAGE. Theocratic order my ass. Excuse my French.

I always felt like he could go mainstream when he wanted to, The problem was that all he was going through with warner and all I think that he wanted to go in a different direction, One that he had not tried up until that point. Its good to see him at peace with his life and his music.

I honestly thought that Prince would be old before he garnished any more attention. It seems when musicians season themselves, they get the respect they deserve.

What musicology appears to be is a mid-career resurgance much like what Tom Petty experienced with "Full Moon Fever". Of course, that only last a few years, and Petty is back to modest record sales again.

I'll admit that I was a naysayer. I had no clue that Prince would be able to recapture the spotlight. But the question is will he be able to parlay all of this attention into something that will last or is he destined to recede into the background after the Musicology tour is over? I really hope that this is only the beginning of his "comeback" but I have my doubts.

I'm surprised as well with the overall success of the tour and the attention that follows. Even if you consider Musicology a sub par album, the total amout of sold-out concerts is good as he has ever done here, even after Purple Rain. I wonder how long this will last and would he capitalize on it when he drops a new album. Will this success carry over when he tours the Europeon Union and the rest of the world?

I'll be honest - after the non-event that was 2003, I truly thought it would never "happen" for him again. I certainly didn't picture him getting on the cover of RS this year!! That was such a cool surprise! smile

I agree with what gooey said.

I've seen many people say "He's back to the old Prince" (in print, in person, online) - which makes me think **HUH!**

I listen to Musicology, I don't hear the old Prince (I'm not saying I should, or would like to hear the old Prince sound) - but the media attention, Prince's own push for the project, and the label backing (read: cash) behind the project, has had more to do with Musicology's success than anything else.

There's tons of us who have said this from the start - It's great that Prince is back in the limelight, but it's definately no reflection on the music in comparison to other post-WB/80s albums - there are several albums that could have hit like Musicology did, had they had the backing/timing that this project did: Gold, Emancipation, Rave, LOL! even NPS at a stretch (a long one, yeah!).

This is a little later than a mid-life resurgance. He's not a spring chicken anymore.

Like my mom always told me when I'd get down about NEVER being able to see Prince in concert - "When he feels like making some money, he'll come back." Mom was right, and I'm loving it! But I totally agree that the music he is putting out now is no comparison to what he put out back in the day. Not that I don't like it (love Musicology to death!) but it's just not the same. And don't get me wrong...I don't want him to change. I'm just happy he's back in the mainstream - I was pleasantly surprised!
Run fast, jam to Prince, but stay in your lane. Peace.

I agree. This album is good but with the right backing and promotion, "The Gold Experience" could have done just as well.

As far as hearing friends say "The old Prince is back". I still haven't heard that. They are still saying "He's still doing that weird shit except now he's trying to fit it in with today's music". I agree with them to some extent as far as "Illusion, Coma, Pimp, and Circumstance" and "Life Of The Party" goes. That is trying to fit in with today's generation and he defiinately could have left those tracks off. As far as the rest of album, to me it sounds just like a lot of the stuff Prince has done from 1985 up until the present.

As far as many of my friends that used to be huge Prince fans, they all say the "old Prince" is gone for good. After all these years, I agree with them. The only way anyone will ever hear the "old Prince" again is if he ever releases some of the stuff from the vault from that era.

A lot of people, even on this site, never thought he'd get this type of mainstream attention, record sales, etc. Tho, many don't want to admit it. But it really only takes a major label to put their promotional muscle behind someone - regardless of the quality of the music. This is what a major can do for you.

I know a couple of people who are into a lot of different music (supposedly rolleyes ), who are serious music fans, who were into Prince during his commercial peak (one of them even digs pre-Purple Rain Prince) who stopped keeping up with any of his latest music in eons, who semi-rave about Musicology and how it's one of his best albums in yeeears. shrug Az if.

I think Prince will change his style again shortly.
He always reacts to the music scene, albiet never totally changing his style to match it.
Prince is very fickle. The last 10 years have been very distracting for him--I think now that he's found a formula that has given him some success and a good deal of extra props, he can concentrate on music again.

Once all the lawsuits subside, MJ will probably be on the right tract again too--you'll see. You'll see.
