Which album has grown on you the most

Which of Prince's albums has improved the most in your eyes since it was released?

For me, it would have to be Come. I didn't care for this album the first two or three or eight times I played it, but one day I put it on during a party and BAM!!! I've loved it ever since.

Lovesexy is another album that I had to learn to love, but I never felt as negative about it as I did Come so it finishes second.

Peace, David

Definately Lovesexy.

I was dissapointed the first heard it but after listening to it 5 or 6 times, it started to grow on me and slowly became one of my favorite albums.

I'm gonna have to go with the Come album as well , At the time I was expecting it to sound more like the Beautiful Experience video, and was disappointed with the album versions

It's now one of my favorites

-Come
-Emancipation (I was SOOOO disapointed when this one came out...I expected more cutting edge trax...I was hoping for 2 much)
-New Power Soul
-The Rainbow Children (yes kids....I'm tryin....REALLY TRYIN...I think I need wine)
Every minute of last night is on my face today....

Anxiety

Actually, The Rainbow Children has taken on a whole new level of quality since hearing parts of it live. "Wedding Feast" is still painful as always (it reminds me of "Waiting for Guffman"), but overall, there's nothing like hearing music live to give you a new appreciation for its studio counterparts.

The one album that's grown on me most, however, is "Come". Listening to it is like rummaging around in Prince's attic - you always dig up something interesting with each listen.

I have to say Lovesexy as well. Ittook me a while to appreciate the pure musicianship and power of the record.

I would have to say Parade. I hated Parade when it came out, but now it's probably my favorite album. After that it would have to be Come.

I hated that piece of crap for
1) the cover pose wa s too fuckin' gay
2) I couldn't n skip around to the trax I wanted

The musicianship is out of this world, tho!! It's a masterpiece.

talking about emancipation.. did you ever notice 85% of that album is done with keyboards..

I think the only live tracks were guitar & bass.. but even the bass wasn't live on every song..

I don't know if this good or bad??? still trying to decide

Controversy. For the most part, this CD made me gag when it first came out. Having been conditioned by the sounds played on the radio back in those days, Controversy was in a world all of its' own and I simply could not relate. The ONLY song I could get w/ was Let's Work. YEARS later, when my appreciation for true ARTISTRY kicked in, and I started back buying all the Prince music that I did not already have, I found Controversy to be an amazing piece of music. In a way, I am disappointed that it took me years before I was "READY " for Controversy. But, I know that I am what I am and there is no fault in being where I'm at in any particular time or space. I'm just glad his music is out there in abundance. And, I know that if I can't relate today, I will eventually get where he was coming from later down the road. I'm cool w/ that as I know when I finally can relate, I've got yet another wonderful musical journey to embark on from the man who is way ahead of his time. So, really, I don't feel so bad being late to DINNER...cause when I'm ready to chow down, I KNOW I'm mo' be gettin' my eat ON. THANKS Prince.

Dirty Mind
TGE close second
Come comes in 3rd.

In the reverse category, I actually liked GB when it 1st came out and even 4 a long time afterwards... until I saw the film. I have found most of it unlistenable ever since (JIR is still 1 of my fave songs of all time). Funny how context is so important...

'chaos and disorder'...i had just found 'the exodus' maybe two weeks before 'chaos' came out...i loved 'the exodus' so much cos it was so funky...
then i get 'chaos' thinking it's gonna follow suit...
obviously there are hardly any similarities between the two...so i continued to listen to 'the exodus' more...
then one drunken nite when i was forcing people to listen to prince, i broke out 'chaos...' and i was like...'this rocks...and i've loved it ever since...

CHAOS & DISORDER...

skip to the bottom if you wanna know why..but first some bakground on me...just so you know here I'm coming from...

I'm an old school Prince music fan...(meaning I bought the 'Prince' album when it was first released with my paper-route money.) I was a reliable fan of his music from that point through most of the 80's...started fading a little bit as a 'diehard' fan around Lovesexy: (although I thought Lovesexy had some great songs I thought many of them where getting suffocted under his new heavyhanded over-production style)
Graffitti Bridge was the real turning point though...with the exception of a few really good tracks (Joy In Repetition is a gem for example) most of GB was really really bad IMO. Most of Diamonds & Pearls bored me. Though most of his 90s stuff bored me, I will say I WAS ONE OF HE FEW PEOPLE WHO LIKED THE "COME" ALBUM RIGHT AWAY. I thought the production on COME was a little more relaxed and it felt more honest then his other recent work. The rest of the OFFICIALLY released 90s stuff was too slick & too contrived for my taste (of course there are some great tunes scattered in that era...but on the whole I just thought it was kinda bland.)

I remember hearing Dinner ith Delores on the radio...it just didn't knock me over. That song did NOT make me curious to hear what the rest of the record sounded like...I think I eventually bought the entire C&D but I don't know if I ever listened to it all the way through at the time of it's release.

That was a mistake...I pulled it out recently after hearing 'Had U' on some website...I was like hmmm, what else on Chaos did i miss the first time?

LOTS...the whole damn thang ROCKS! It's SO much more HONEST and stripped down production wise than most of the other stuff he was putting out at the time. It's not so damn slick...it's not trying to be something it's not. It's kinda loose and kinda angry and it's gotsome nice rocky guitar and some REAL drums too...I'll admit it...I F'd up and slept on this one for sure.

I advise any fellow oldschool prince fans who just wanted to hear a fun rock-jam type record...a record that for the most part sounds like he and the band went in, pressed record and just WENT for it...if you like that type of loose feel to your music...go search for Chaos & Disorder...

better late than never smile

(BTW...TRC...Narrator voice is baaad..real baad...but I will say I LOVE the MUSIC on Rainbow Children. The MUSIC. Just the Music...

NPS definitely. First time I heard it (btw, I got it used for $2.99-- a real bargain), I immediately dismissed it, but now it's one of my favorite Prince albums!

As far as the narration in TRC, it is strange to listen to in the beginning, but I have to say it grows on you, I can't imagine the album without it now...strange as it may seem....

"Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

"Rainbow Children". When I first heard it I though this must be one of Prince's worst albums ever. Now I totally love it and I think it's his best album since '94's "Come"

Around The World In A Day. I just can't believe it's taken me so long to appreciate that album as a whole. Absolutely loving it now.

Can't imagine New Power Soul will ever grow on me as a great album but I do like Come On, The One and Wasted Kisses. In fact, Mad Sex is cool, and Shoo Bee Doo. Funky Music's kinda funky and so is Push It Up come to think of it. Hell, I liked Freaks On This Side when I listened to it a long time ago. I'm positive this will never grow on me, but maybe I'm gonna check it out just one more time...
