Biting off of the our legend the way Elvis bit off of someones blue swede shoes ! Lets make Remy earn his props before we start giving him props. Lets see him live ! Can he play the bassline of 777 9311 or Lady Cab driver.... Lets seeeee first !

I would never think to call Remy Shand "The Next Prince" However, I am really diggen Remy as Remy. His album is wonderful and hes adorable. "Don't use that magical, mysterious, intoxicating, joy, fantastic, fascinating word called LOVE unless U Love me 2 the 9's. This is the only kind of Love that I've been dreaming of. Fonkay 31, ya feel me?
It's always hard to tell these days until you hear these folks play live-then the truth comes out on what they can really do or not do. Yeap, I use the term "industry act" because we just have so many of them these days you can tell, they didnt make it up themselves, they were made up! By somebody else! As in the record company or the big corporate conglomerates that own the company that's putting out the artist.(the latest flavor of the month aka 'Nutrasweet as compared to real cane sugar or real honey!) Also I believe they came up with the term "Neo-Soul" too. Black folks did not. They do these things for marketing and sales reasons.moolah! It seems the commercial music goes like this---real---fake imitation of----real----another fake imitation of---real-more fake imitations--then real again. As of 3.16.02 we are still at the crossroads of some fake (and some real too but mostly fake) getting ready to go back into real music again. Hoe long will it last? good question-hopefully longer then the last 7 yrs or so of fakeness with a lil real sprinkled in. A good book to get is "Culture Bandits" by Del Jones outta Philadelphia. He makes it plain. Also check out Chuck D's website http://www.public-enemy.com and also check out the excellent "Merchants of Cool" peice PBS did last year at http://www.pbs.org (FrontLine). same 'ole game they always been doing, tho I still gotta hear the dude live to say if he is real or fake or just well taught and coached. peace!

Hmmm Culture Bandits..I will pick it up. Ya know whats funny is how many people cant sift through all of the hype.I was peeing out a documentary about how Elvis got started. Your are right, same old tactics. Rhythm and blues = Rock and Roll.....R & B = Neo- Soul. Just depends on who is singing it at the time. Im not sure todays listeners have a real appreciation for quality. Thanks for your response. We will set people striaght. [This message was edited Sat Mar 16 22:50:23 PST 2002 by Fonkay31]

Yep. I knew this one was coming sooner or later. Nothing new about Remy Shand. He's doing a D'Angelo meets Maxwell and copies off of Curtis Mayfield type of thang. The video shows him singing and playing all the instruments---an idea which he probably borrowed from Jon B., who did it in his song "Don't Say" who borrowed it from D'Angelo, who did it in his "Me And Those Dreamin' Eyes Of Mine" video, who borrowed it from Andre Cymone, who did it in Jody Watley's "Some Kind Of Lover" video. (see the recurring theme here?). You know the media is going to blow him up much larger than life for "sounding black". Next thing you know, there will be quotes like "He's a better singer than Maxwell and plays more instruments than Prince". Neo-soul is about to get hit with its new Elvis. It may seem like I'm being a little mean to the new guy, but I know how this goes (remember Vanilla Ice, George Michael and Eminem?) If his record takes off, it will be hailed as "neo-soul's salvation" by the "mainstream media" a.k.a. the pop crowd. The song is called "Take A Message". It sounds pretty cool, but because its a white guy on MOTOWN, I get the feeling its going to be a media frenzy over this guy. Or maybe not? I guess we'll see in due time. I was just a bit surprised to see the video on VH-1 Soul first. Seeking "african-american approval" first, I guess. What-eva.
