This would be a great show if he were to drop the smoothed-out, old-school preacher routine. I would have loved to see this setlist from the Prince who would run all over the place, take off his shirt and break a sweat. The funny thing is, he's probably as good as he's ever been with a guitar right now. Go figure. shrug

I think the only thing that would make this possible is if Larry tells him to do it.

How is "All the Critics Love U in New York" a rock song? It's more of a dance pop-tune.

Have you not heard the guitar work that comes in later in the song? Bring it in a bit earlier in a subtle way and you got a very cool rock performance.

I gotta agree with the initial post. The bulk of your songs are kick ass ROCK numbers, but All the Critics Love U in New York, as much as I love it, is much more pop than rock. If he reworks one number to make it rock, he could do it with a couple dozen.

I hope he hears us! It seems like a large number of us are SCREAMING out for a guitar-heavy rock album from Prince. It's been a LONG time!

C'mon, P -- you've given us enough ballads in the last 5 years to last us until the 22nd Century. wink

What kind of band would Prince need for a rock tour? I'm assuming he would want a different bass player. I love Rhonda but I'm not sure she is "raw" enough. And maybe a new drummer, too. Nothing against John Blackwell. This is a really crazy idea, and yes, I know it would never happen, but how about bringing Andre Cymone and Dez Dickerson back? Assuming they still have the musical chops for it. I'm sure both those cats would agree to tour with Prince again. No doubt they need the money. So who would the drummer be?

John Blackwell. Sorry d00d, but he's the most powerful drummer Prince has ever had. I think he could rock harder than anyone Prince has played with.

True, but All The Critics already has a fair amount of rock in it. Towards the end, there's some great guitar stuff. He would just have to bring some in a bit sooner.

OH, I love this post! I just said to my sister the other day: Oh, Prince should do an all rock set! (I was listening to BAMBI at the time when I said it!). I love that song! OH, the guitar at the end.

Computer Blue, Darling Nikki, Bambi, Let's Go Crazy -- these would sound so good LOUD! He'd really look like the genius he is!!!

That would be a great set list. Although I'd want a couple of changes.

First off, Empty Room has to be in there,

Secondly, I'd want to see Rock Hard in a funky place.

Thirdly, You can't have no rock show without Shockadelica

Fourth, 17 Days would fit in nicely.

fifth, a must guitar solo is missing, so we HAVE to add Temptation!!

Snap! This is a show I'd travel to see. I know he's done a lot of Santana, but wouldn't mind seeing one of his songs in this list, and also something deep-funky (aka Funkadelic) that he can rock-out on with his guitar.

cool

I used to want Prince to do something like an all rock show. If he limited himself it would be easier to compare him favorably to other rock artists. But I think his show rocks more than the records do, anyway. Also, I'd be disappointed if I went to a concert and couldn't dance.

And what makes horns "bullshit?"

Anyway, if he did it would go more like:

Damned if I Do
So Far So Pleased
Animal Kingdom
Poor Goo
Cinnamon Girl
Strays of the World
Into the Light
One of Us
Gold

and half his fans would hate it like they hate Chaos & Disorder.

I was thinking about temptation also. The beginning of that song is awesome. I just don't know if the rest of the song would work.

Horns are bullshit cuz he puts them in every song. What that fuck are horns doing in Let's Go Crazy?

Poor Goo
would be a good one to add, and I was thinking about Strays of the World, but I'm not sure if I really like that song. Great guitar work in it though.

I can see disliking "ladies and gentlemen Candy Dulfer!!!" instead of hearing the second verse of nearly every song, but I think a carefully arranged horn section can enhance almost any song, even Let's go Crazy. I think the Undertaker gets a bit thin in places because it's lacking more instruments.

I think most of us would agree that his music is saturated by horns and it's time for a change. It's just boring already. Since he probably can't dance like he used to, he needs to do something else that's exciting. I'd say a rock show is the way to go.

I wouldn't even suggest that Prince replace any of his core band members to do a rock show. I think that John and Rhonda, and even Mike have the chops and the versatility to pull it off. Besides, you don't want it to not still be a "Prince show." You want that harder, guitar-driven rock, but it's always going to lay on a bed of funk, right?

Artists like Dave Grohl would be cool additions, but I'm not asking for Prince to have his own Probot side project. I want Prince to be Prince, I just want him to focus on the ROCK for one album or one tour. (I'd seriously settle for the album if I had to).

I have made my own burned cds of just the guitar-driven rock stuff for friends of mine and have used that angle of Prince's music to win over a good dozen or so friends who didn't listen to Prince before. They totally respect him just from hearing that and open their minds to the non-rock stuff once they respect what the man can do on the guitar.

Also, when I saw him this summer, every time I went I noticed some "metal heads" in the audience and was so excited to see their respect for Prince and their obvious appreciation of the show when he focused on the guitar work.

All of this reminds me of the Dave Chappelle skit with Questlove and John Mayer...that thing about how black people like drums and white people like the electric guitar. Funny as hell!!! We don't like to stereotype and put people in boxes (I, for instance, LOVE the drums), but damned if there ain't a bit of truth to this...however stereotypical. HA HA!!!

It would be funny if he popped in a couple of tracks you wouldn't expect to be played, but completely rocked them up. Something like a full out rock version of Do U Lie, with a mega guitar solo, would be very cool.

He'd blow the place apart.

If there's one thing I've noticed from him this past year, it's that his strength lies in his guitar playing. I think he still has it in himself to put on a great rock show. No horns or any other bullshit of course.

I'd go with a set list like:

Let's go Crazy
I'm Yours
Witness 4 The Prosecution
Electric Chair
Zannalee
Interactive
Endorphinemachine
The Undertaker
Dolphin
The Cross
Computer Blue
Eye Like It There
319
Sister
All The Critics Love U In New York
Loose!
Live 4 Love

Chaos and Disorder
What's My Name
Darling Nikki
Joint 2 Joint
Calhoun Square
The Ride
Peach
Sign O The Times
America
Bambi
In This Bed I Scream (guitar ending)

YES YES YES!! A ROCK SHOW WOULD BE THE BEST!!
ZANNALEE star star star star star
ENDORPHINMACHINE nuts
ALL THE CRITICS booty!
AMERICA nuts
PEACH!!! YES YES YES!!!
THE RIDE!!!
BAMBI!!!
COMPUTER BLUE!!! wall
I would just diiiiie! woot!

I don't. It's just wishful thinking.

A couple of his Paisley shows were all out rock. He couldn't turn his guitar up loud enough on one of 'em. I went home VERY happy that night...
