Prince Does Rick James/Ray Charles Tribute in Atl I just heard that Prince did a Rick James/Ray Charles tribute during the Atlanta show. I can see Ray but Rick is a bit of a surprise seeing as how everytime Rick opened his mouth about Prince he had nothing nice to say. That much being said I think that showed real class by Prince to share with his thought about Rick in the biggest way possible through his music. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum but I just had to share.

Totally agree...Rick kept runnin' his mouth till the end. Class act by Prince. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

To be fair, Rick did have some respectful things to say in a recent article about Prince helping keep the funk alive, etc. Sorry, I can't recall where the article ran off hand.

In a mid-90s interview with Vibe magazine,Rick said that Prince is a "brilliant musician",so he obviously respected Prince's talents. But Rick was mad at Prince's behavior in the past.He mentioned the time when his mother asked for Prince's autograph, and he just ignored her and walked away.I've always felt that their feud was dumb and silly, and based on just a few misunderstandings. In a perfect world, the two of these guys would have been good friends and recorded an album together, lol.

These are two of my favorite guys. And to know they both matured enough to reach an olive branch( if you will) to each other is HELLA COOL in my book. Right On

On Friday, as soon as we got the news, I wondered if P would do something in memory of Rick at one of the shows. What a sweet thing to do. Definitely an A+ in classiness there.

Peace http://www.prince.org/msg/8/105820 Thanks for the hook up! That was a cool piece on Rick. I still sensed a little jealousy but since Rick admitted it that was cool. I think Rick died in peace and that is the coolest thing. Anyone who hasn't read it yet check out that link to the interview because it is very playful and funny. Peace THE CARDINAL HAS SPOKEN!!!

Why wouldn't Prince do a Rick James tribute?? We're talking about some antics from Prince that was over 20 years ago, and as mentioned earlier, Rick had some deep respect for Prince's talent and I'm sure vice versa! He's obviously matured since 1980, and even if he hadn't, even Prince couldn't overlook Rick's importance and significant contributions to funk and R&B in general!! I sure hope he does another one in his upcoming DC stand!

That's right!!! They had some petty differences but I think it was a healthy rivalry of sorts. But hey Prince opened for Rick in 1980 and they are both pioneer funakateers. Prince has to acknowledge Rick. Prince is one of few still carrying the Great Black Music Torch. I really hope someone taped Prince's tribute to Rick and Ray Charles. This is history and we have to show our love for the music. Prince's spirituality and love of music is larger than some petty beef. And Rick did say in the Eurweb interview he never dreamed he would like Prince and that Prince was one of a few brothers keeping Funk alive. Big-ups to Prince and Rest In Peace Rick.

What songs did he do?
I assume he did "Georgia On My Mind", of if we were really lucky, "Uh-huh". But did he do Superfly? .

On Friday in Houston, he riffed on "Superfreak" for just a moment, saying "rest In Peace Rick James" a couple of times. During Maceo's solo set, he sang "Georgia On My Mind". Was this similar to what he did in Atlanta?

Of course he would do a tribute...out of respect for their musicianship and to show that there werent any hard feelings on his part towards Rick James. It's only proper. &

I'm from Buffalo and have heard many Rick James stories growing up there. Dez also talks about their tour with Rick in 1979, in his book.(buy it) Rick once said in an interview that when his late mother met Prince backstage and asked for an autograph, he just ignored her and walked away. On top of that, Prince stole(jerk out) Vanity from Rick at an awards afterparty back in 1981. Basically she came with Rick and left with Prince. Besides giving his band a run their money. All those things added up. Prince being 10 years younger was pushing Rick James from his "Punk Funk" throne. Rick was my first arena rock concert in 1982. Prince 1999 tour was my second. I think Rick set the stage for Prince blow up. He was selling out shows when Prince still trying to get comfortable performing in front of people. He merged funk, rock and ballads just like Prince would eventually perfect by the 1999 release. He had girl groups and off-shoot band projects like Teena Marie,Mary Jane girls,Stone City Band,Val Young and Process and The Doo Rags.He put Buffalo on the map long before "Buffalo wings"! There were many similarities back in their early days. Happy that they both seemed to let go some of their ego and show respect for each other. Always been my two favorite guys! Release Yourself

Big-ups to Prince and Rest In Peace Rick. So true, I would love to have a copy of it because this is a truly a historic moment. I'm with on the rivalry. I truly enjoyed it in the early days. That's when both artists were at their best. I don't think either one of them would have become the big stars they were without the rivalry. That rivalry brought out nothing but hardcore funk from both sides of the fence. When Rick James finally was no threat to Prince...that's when Prince got in his "far out artistic" retro mood. Yes, I loved the feud back in the day. In the 1990s, though, I wish they could have become friends. The music world had gone straight to hell in the 1990s with hip hop dominating everything. I would have loved to have seen the two of them come together in the 1990s and combine forces to try and overthrow this bullshit that is on the radio now and drive it out of style. As I said on another thread, I couldn't be more proud of both artists than I am now. Rick finally said some nice things about Prince. Of course, he said them in his own sarcastic way but hey, he has felt hurt for all these years. At least he finally said them. And Prince gave a wonderful tribute to Rick James and gave him a nice send off. I have nothing but love for both of them. Andy is a four letter word.
