Prince: Jehovah's Witnesses [Sun-Times Excerpt]

http://www.suntimes.com/o...ith02.html

Prince: Jehovah's Witnesses

Since his conversion several years back, a kinder, gentler Prince has excised the naughty parts from his bawdiest tunes and begun quoting Scripture in songs and conversations. He's even stricken some less-than-wholesome numbers from the set list entirely. "Look at this situation with the FCC after Janet [Jackson]: We've gone too far now. We've pushed the envelope off the table and forgotten there was a table. You can't push the envelope any further than I pushed it. So stop! What's the point?" he told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year.

And the newly clean act is no publicity stunt. Prince, who famously floored Tipper Gore when he sang of masturbation in "Darling Nikki," is dead serious about God, the Bible and morality. "What we have today is the same situation right now that Noah faced," he told the Associated Press in May. "Some rain is going to come, and it's time to get on the ark. The best thing we can do is to keep our lives in order and our conduct clean."

That will teach me to skip read...

When I read

Finding Their Religion [Sun-Times Excerpt]
Excerpt from Chicago Sun-Times lifestyle article on celebrities who have found religion, including a blurb on Prince embracing the Jehovah's Witnesses faith.

I read it as "...including a blurb on Prince's embarrassing Jehovah's Witness faith...".

My bad...

Hmm,so is Prince's "ark" God or the Watchtower Society? Jesus is the Ark, not a man-made organization.

I believe he meant that people should bear in mind the consequences of their actions and how our conduct as individuals affects the lives of others.

Miles, You hit the nail on the head. By the way, Why is it that everytime a conversation comes up about religion, people start with the negative comments? I think that it really does show where they come from. Weather you agree or not at least it is a positive thing right?

Mr. Prince has certainly embraced a new faith-walk, and I salute him for taking that chance. However, I would also advise that it's best to remember that this is only one man's perspective, and that sex and sexuality are where they are today, in part, because of him, so if this is his way of not taking responsibility, please rethink. Please remember that this was what Prince was getting on people's cases about when he was at his bawdy best.

I agree you can't do that , but what I'm saying is that if someone is telling you something that is good and or positive, why have an attitude about it? Weather you agree or not, if it's a good thing then why come back with something negative? OK all people aren't religious, but it's not as if he's telling you all to beat your wives or to get in your cars and drive then as fast as you can. I hope that I'm making my point.

Well, I for one love sex and I love the sexy lyrics. I do hate lyrics that bash any sex or sexual orientation, but if it's about having a good time having sex with a willing participant, then what's wrong with it.

Prince has built a career on his fusion of sex and music, and spirituality for that matter. I loved him then and I can tolerate his 'goody good' attitude now, but most of his hits came from that.

Look at the thread about his chart topping albums. They were mainly the ones that were made during his years of sexual freedom.

I wonder if he did the same today if it would sell, that is make an album that's both funky and sexy and smart.

So you want him 2 sing about sex for the rest of his life? How can he move one as a musician if he sings about the same thing in every song. MJ does that crap. Thats pop music. Prince is not pop, he is the whole ball of wax so 2 speak.

Oops! double-post my bad! I believe Prince fans care more about him topping the charts then he does. I believe he makes music they way HE want to and if you like it...good!!..if not oh well! I believe that he has the talent to make #1
albums regardless of the nature of his music.

I'd like 2 just make the point, Little Red Corvette ( A song about pickin up a slut!) was a # 1 hit, & it seem 2 do better, Publicly (matter of fact, made him who he is 2 day) then Holy River.Hmmmm.... since his Purple days, what songs have actually hit #1? not that I care about number rankings.
My point is.... I fell head over heels for the man who was not afraid to speak about his sexuality, that's what makes him intriguing, & unique. The way he speaks about & to women, is what made him one of the Hottest Hotties. It was'nt his Romantic side I'll tell ya that.
One man, & one man alone, can say a sentence, talking about Sex, Politics, & Religion, in that same sentence, & make it sound good, & make me hot at the same time. No 1 I know, has ever done that, & I don't even like politics.

Lyrics rarely have anything to do with whether or not a song will be a hit and make money. Some of the most simple, silly, and stupid lyrics have made smash hits because the music and melody of the song was so great. The lyrics in Prince's biggest hits really weren't that raunchy. It simply wasnt just the lyrics that made them great songs...it was the music.

Purple Rain - rated G
1999 - rated G
Little Red Corvette - PG13 maybe?
When Doves Cry - could sing in front of Grandma
I Would Die 4 U - rated G
Raspberry Beret - another one for Grandma
Kiss - only nasty if sung by Tom Jones
U Got The Look - very tame
Let's Go Crazy - somewhere between G and PG?
Cream - a few suggestive lyrics - PG13?
Diamonds And Pearls - G

Do you think if he took all the songs on Musicology and changed the lyrics so that every song was about sex with explicit lyrics it would sell better?
Many Christmas' ago, I went to buy a doll for my son. I reached for the last one they had, but so did another man. As I rained blows upon him, I realized there had to be another way.

It may be that Prince had an awakening in his soul. I guess like John Travolta and Cruz chose Scientology as their path to spiritual enlightment; Prince found JW. Religions are like the spokes of the wheel; they all lead to the center, God! Keep the faith!
