Illusion, Coma, Pimp... is wasted potential...

I mean, it's got a great chorus, a really funny, clever story, and Prince's vocals in it are great and really entertaining.

But good lord, could this song sound any more poorly made? It sounds like it was recorded in some guy's garage. The production is just terrible.

Hell, even the guitar (which is nice and funky) sounds too loud to the rest of the song, and the synth is barely even noticeable.

It just bothers me, cause if Prince had used more modern producing with this (or God help us, a co-producer), I think this song would be incredible (like Shockadelica...or Roses with ten times better lyrics).

When a song from '84 like Let's Go Crazy sounds more up to date than a song like this in 2004, that's a problem.

imho
i happen to think the song is just fine the way Prince has intended it to be released.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

I don't know, just sounds like more of a blueprint for a great funk song than a finished product. Sounds like it was made with really bad equipment.

I agree that the production is horrible. But the song is poo poo no matter how you slice it. This should have never seen the light of day.

Okay, I admit it! I didn't like the song so much at first. It slowed me down after Musicology 'n all. Then I bumped it from the car stereo and it grew on me.

I wholeheartedly agree that this song is wasted potential!

It's clear that he was taking it in a certain direction, but seems to have stopped just short of "nailing it".

As a result, it's a "good" song, when it could've been GREAT!

My least favorite on the album. It sounds too hip hoppish. I also don't care for "Life Of The Party". Other than that, I like the rest of the album (after a few listens of course). "Cinnamon Girl" and "A Million Days" caught my ear immediately. I love those two.

I am still surprised that tastes are that different ! "Cinnamon Girl" is among the 5 weakest songs IMO he has ever released and I don't like "A Million Days" either. ICPAC , like I said before, is a rare highlight on Musicology nod nod

I agree... kinda smile I honestly think his intention was 2 make it seem like when recording he had no clear production intentions lol. Well @ least no intention of making this sound modern…

The song does seem a little uncalculated 2 me... in a way that it has a raw feel tho... smile SOme noises r a wee bit tinny & tear in2 the melody... yes, but I never cringe when i hear this song, instead I’m surprised. If u ask me he used a cre8ive 4mat 4 this song. & I believe it adds a funky element 2 the album that other songs don’t. Listen 2 the vocals 4 xample… & tell me they don’t stand out in a peculiar way, they r bolder than anything on that track, & seem 2 run on their own. As does the guitar…

Apart from the sound… his story telling puts a lot of visuals in my head which is indeed a nice thing biggrin So yep... im 1 of those who really does like this song smile

This is honestly one of my favorite tracks on Musicology. I like the raw edge to his voice and the instrumentation. For years now, Prince songs have sounded SOOOOO polished. It was refreshing, IMO, to get some tracks on Musicology as raw as this- they almost feel like 'demos' and that's okay by me.

prince's music is produced and mixed with everything loud and simple (that's his childlike brand sound)... The entire rave album... SOTT is the same thing but with more reverb... the only prince albums not produced this way are: For You, Prince, Rainbow Children. Those are more conservatively produced and mixed.
