Prince's Voice

A couple of years ago I was watching a documentary about Prince. There was a music critic on there who said "There is no musician, other than Prince, who is capable of conveying so much pain and anguish through his voice." After I heard this I realized that's what it was about Prince that maid me dig him so much. Whether he screams out of sexual satisfaction like in Do Me or out of anger like in Something In The Water, Prince's gift is in his voice. I don't care what kind of album Prince puts out, or if he sings to the backdrop of barking dogs, when he screams (pants, moans...) it really gets me. What do you all think.

I completely agree...he "used" to sing with such passion...
the screams and whatnot. Also when he played guitar...same
thing smile

It probably was his groove and melody that first got me. And then his voice just made the music resonate even deeper. I especially like his Camille style vocals; If I Was Your Girlfriend just gets me every time, especially live.

I think you are absolutely right! There are amazing things about Prince's voice quality and texture. I don't know much about vocals, but in every other song is voice also sounds [i]different[i], which is what I really like about him also. For instance, like in 'If I was your girlfriend' sounds different from 'Purple Rain' and in 'Do me' and other songs. I don't know if he does this purposely as in the studio, but it seems like he has a lot of vocal range. I hope I'm right because that's what I dig about him most because it all sounds really good to me also.

You're so right, and even though his voice always sounds different you always still know it's Prince

I think it's a huge exaggeration to say no other musician aside from Prince conveys pain and anguish through their voices. It's hard for me to believe that someone would even say such a thing.

EXACTLY! Like when Prince says the word"never" he really says it like he means it. Or the word "lover". He just really conveys it, its very theatrical. I think thats what u'd call "phrasing"?

Prince- ur the shiz-ass!!!

supernova---Read it again, buddy. It says no other musician is capable of conveying SO MUCH (keyword being-SO MUCH) anguish. Others can and do convey sadness (obviously) Its just that Prince does it best. (I sound like Wellbeyond.argghhh!!)

I read it. It's in no way true. You guys need to listen to a lot more music than just Prince. His badassness is legendary, but if that's a verbatim quote I'm surprised an adult would say it.

I don't agree that there are "no other musicians that express pain and anguish as well as Prince". Personally, I'd put him towards the top of my list but I do have friends who don't like the way that he sings and don't feel anything when he screams out lyrics. I think that when it comes to experiencing emotions through music it's something that's very subjective. For that reason, I disagree with the view that he's the best.

I do. And still, no one comes close vocally for expressing so much lust, emotion, desperateness, and desire as Prince IMO. NO ONE!!!

God has truly blessed P with a beautiful voice. However, I feel that the passion, pain, anguish etc. that resonates in and through his voice originates from his soul. In other words, I don't feel that Prince's gift of expressing himself is found in his voice. It's from deep within his soul. This is what we can all relate to. He merely taps into his soul and the emotion flows. The magic lies in his ability to freely express what's in his soul through his beautiful voice & his music. In other words, the gift is not in his voice alone. It's in his heart. The voice is merely the instrument through which he can convey what's inside of him. Most peeps aren't free enough in their soul to express themselves as P can. I think a lot of peeps hold back from expressing what's in their soul out of fear etc. I feel that many relate to P's expression because he's able to communicate what they already feel inside but may hold back from expressing themselves. I think it "gets you" because he's touching your soul and pulling all that emotion from you as well. Souls touching souls. Isn't that what life is all about?

Luvy I agree with you totally and very nicely put.

Yep! He got that too, and that NO OTHER 'artist' has...and he has every other type of other music, style, his own style, and humor in his voice and music!

Therefore, you really don't NEED to listen to any other artist, whether you do or don't.

I think luvy hit the nail right on the head! All the emotion his voice projects in many of his songs come straight from the gut. And when he gets in that mode, that's right where it hits you too! His music is not just music. It's an experience.

And sometimes the experience is even almost too much to handle. You gotta be ready! It's difficult to go staight from the Parade CD and put in 'The Dance Electric'. It's just too much, too sudden...kinda like dropping an ice cold glass in boiling water.

And I listen to a bit of everything, from many artists. But I think of any other who's music it quite THAT dynamic!

I just love that bit on Everwhere off TRC when the song breaks down right near the end and he sings:

"we've gotta lot of work to do"

He conveys alot of emotion, like he can see the mountain infront of him.
When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

Pain & ecstasy at the same time? I can totally relate to that. Sometimes it feels so darn good. . .it hurts.

In my opinion, P has the sexiest voice that I've ever heard. And, I'm not just talking about his singing voice. His speaking voice can send me to the rafters. I love listening to the interview disk from way back. Yummy. smile

No real emotion in the Rave?
Then why did i cry when i first listened
Eye Love U But Eye Can't Trust U Anymore and
Man O'War?
I think i'm kinda hysterical, huh?
He knows how to make us feel his pain, not only by screaming, like he did in The Beautiful Ones or Darling Nikki. YOU can't understand him, but that's your problem, not mine.
peace...

I wasn't really arguing that no one can convey emotion through their voice as well as Prince. My point was, once I heard that quote , it hit me, that is why I love Prince so much. Besides, those who disagree with what this music critic said, IT"S ONLY YOUR OPINION, just like what the music critic said is his own opinion.

I'd agree with fingerclapawhatsthename. Prince has a monotone voice, staying at the same pitch. I wonder if he sometimes does this to save his voice in some way? In interviews he tends to do that a lot.

But his singing voice is like a finely tuned instrument.
