I really am sorry, as I know this must have been posted before, however; I really would like to know everyone's thoughts on the song "One of Us." I tried to use the search to find out and, as it turns out, it brought up an error message. I apologize if this is a frequent thread.

To tell the truth I love that song. However, I love all of Prince's songs. And the way I see it is that it is not up to me to tell you what I think about the song. You will have to try it out for yourself really! But I do love it though!

Prince did 4 covers on "Emancipation"...."La, La, La...means I Love You", "Betcha, by Golly Wow", "I Can't Make You Love Me", and "One of Us". Out of all these, "One of Us" is the only one worth listening to. "I Can't Make You Love Me" was good, but "One of Us" was a great remake. I love the guitar solo in it. Great song and worth a listen.

I like One of Us, because I think he gives it the gravity it deserves. The original seems too light.

I think his choice of covers has been weird. Sheryl Crow, Shania Twain, Joan Osborne, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell (I know she's long been a favorite of his). You would expect Sly Stone, James Brown, Earth Wind & Fire.

"One Of Us" is one of my all-time favorites by Prince! Okay, maybe it sounds like Martika's "Love... Thy Will Be Done" but, nevertheless, it sounds great! Have u ever heard "One Of Us" live? Fantastic!

I can only think there are 2 reasons to do a cover version - because you like playing the song, or because you think there is potential to improve it or offer a new look at it.

With 'One of Us' I think he said he was drawn to it because it was refreshing to hear a song about God on the radio. A powerful rendition, I like it better than the original, which is not always the case with Prince covers.

I never dug the original, and Prince's cover didn't change my mind about the song, or his version.

Though I like "Betcha by golly wow" (because I got it before digging the original version), Prince doing covers is

OMG, I can't believe he butchered "I can't make you live me" the way he did

One of Us is the only cover I can't listen to. I despise the original, I despise the remake.

Betcha By Golly, Wow! is great.
I Can't Make U Love Me is fantastic.
La, La, La Means Eye Love U is really good.

One of Us sucks.

Betcha By Golly Wow, is Sappy, boring Crap. Hate the original as well though.
Can't Make You Love Me is beautiful, however, Bonnie Rait still does it better.
One Of Us. My Fave of his remakes. Love the Guitar Solo.

I shudder at the thought of him doing a cover album. Imagine him doing a studio version of Just MY Imagination. He would DOOWOP his way through the backing vox.

Of all the ones on Emancipation I think Betcha was best suited for Prince's "I moan some sexy words in between" antics.

I can't make you love me was TOTALLY unsuited. I always think it funny that Prince BASHES people covering HIS songs, then he himself ads lyrics, puts that Paisley production on top AND changes the title (U instead of YOU). Contradictory.

Does seem a bit funny that he would be so pleased that Tina Turner covers Let's Pretend Were Married, but not like Foo Fighters. I think that comment "Write your own songs!" might have been taken out of context, because, like you say, he's covered many songs himself.

I'm sure Prince fell for the Joan Osbourn video first..... I did!
