Agreed. nod The weird noises have absolutely NOTHING 2 do with the song...and it's just not normal and FREEKY! Instrumental? Yes. smile

I fell in love with the song "God" the first time I heard it. I love it from start to finish, especially the screams towards the end.

I usually listen to the instrumental version.

But got no love in return?
Did u understand the real meaning of love?
That it just is and never yearns"

It's the official b-side to Purple Rain (vinyl).
Was released on CD on The Hits/The B-sides.

The instrumental version was only released in the UK, also on vinyl and goes unreleased in any other way.

Both versions are beautiful, but I have to be in the mood for the vocal version. It is like Solo, Prince used his voice as an instrument. I love it though, not dislike it, as many seem to do.

Sometimes I think it's a great song, other times I just have to plug my ears as Prince starts screaming.

Glad you feel that way about both versions.

Incidentally, doesn't that uptempo drumming in the middle of the instrumental version remind you of the beginning of "Full Nelson", from Miles' Tutu album?

That title makes ya wonder, huh? But it was actually Prince being inspired by Miles, who was recording with genius Marcus Miller. As it was the 80's I am sure Mr Davis was WAAAY into Prince's music and chose Mr Miller therefor.

I think it was the hits/b-sides booklet I read it in, but THE COOLEST thing about this song is that it was ALL ONE TAKE.

He just walked in the studio, sat down at the piano and did this all in one take. (I think I read that he went back and tweaked some effects there at the end, but that's about it)

You can forgive the quarkyness of some of the vocals, because it's all live, right there at that moment in time. Cool stuff like that should be captured just how it is, no matter how raw. The stuff I'm most proud of in my work was the spontinuity captured at 2-4 in the morning.

Anyone have the booklet handy to tell us exactly what was written about that song?

Yes, I have often had to tell people to hold their horses when wild assumptions get the better of them with regards to who inspired who.

Both Prince and Miles were definitely checking each other out in the late 80's. What a same that neither was willing to explore further what they could have achieved together on a purely creative platform and instead chose to dwell on their mutual admiration society a little too much for my liking.

Snap

Question is, when did you first hear the song? I think that has a lot to do with how you receive it. Back then, it was pretty cool because it was very different.

Also, it's hard to believe he did it all in ONE take -- listen to the vocals: they overlap.

As I stated, he went back and added some effects. (maybe a few backing vocals tward the end) But from what i read, it was a one take, spontanious thing. That's what makes it cool.

ok, I pulled it out...

God turned out to be one of Prince's more obscure flip sides. Released with Purple Rain, engineer Susan Rogers remembers it as a 'Sunday song."Almost all of Prince's songs with religious or spiritual overtones-'God,' 'The Cross,' 'Sign 'O' The Times' - were recorded on Sundays." she explains. "We were at the warehouse on a really hot afternoon and the equipment kept breaking down. Finally, he turned out all the lights, lit a few candles, recorded 'God' in one take and went home. There wasn't much else to say." One listen reveals one of the most hauntengly unaffected Prince performances on record. The label on my orginal single still has goose bumps.

There ya go...
(from the booklet that came with "The Hits/ The B-Sides")

I must admit that the first time I heard the vocal version I had the same reaction that Susan
Rogers had when she heard Adonis And Bathsheeba. I don't mind it so much now though.
The Instrumental version is another matter though. I absolutely loved it the first time I heard it.
