Is Prince still cool??

I DJ every Friday night I rip out at least 1-3 old skool Prince songs like DMSR, Kiss, Sign O, Cream, etc. These use to be party starters, now they other than Kiss, they are barely recognized.. sad but true. I sometimes get the feeling that the 20 something masses don't think Prince is as cool as we hardcore fans view him.

It's depresing but I think Outkast and Alica Keys are the "cool" artists now, and maybe Prince's age is holding him back.. I'm not sure what he can do to get the young kids to love him like we did..

I know, I not old myself. Alot of young ppl are just so exposed to shitty music music of today (not all of it, some), that they dont know what real or good music is. Just my opinion.

Sometimes I wish I was 14 or 16 again, but I have the great memories and wouldn't trade them for anything.

It's not his age that is holding him back, it is the music these kids are listening to that is dominating everything from radio, television, to clothes. I hope he doesn't even try to appeal to them because that would mean watering his music down to fit in with theirs, which sounds HORRIBLE. If they like him fine, if they don't, who needs them.

I dont think he'll water his music down to sound like the BS out today. He never has went with the flow and thats part of what makes him special. if he gains new fans along the way if not whatever...

Anxiety

i think prince is cooler than ever - to the "common man" (ie, not most of us diehard prince freeks who can geek out talkin' about EXODUS for hours on end lol ), i think he's been forgiven for the "transgressions" of the whole symbol-name thing and all his mid-90s weirdness (the fruits of which i think are going to age far better than most people would predict - just sayin') and i've found that when i mention prince to someone, they usually sigh and say "that guy is SO talented". does that make him "cool"? i think if you rocked a good underground mix of one of his classics, people would get off on the retro factor and also the fact that it's just plain FUNKY. getting people to dance to something like "computer blue" or even "let's go crazy" is gonna be a harder sell, i think.

Like I say, "Prince will always be my main man." He's just sooo incredibly cool. And people nowadays just don't seem 2 appreciate that. Either theyre jealous or theyre just pissed because nobody likes THEIR people. lol

My mom doesn't appreciate him as much as she used 2. It comes from all the new music. But I don't pay any attention 2 the new stuff. Most of all of it is really degrading and it upsets me. I like Alecia and Beyonce P seems 2 rub off on a lot of the younger artist and that is cool.

It's always nice 2 know that some good souls out there are still tripping on Prince. I know I always will be! biggrin

The majority of the youth today are totally brain-dead anyway when it comes to well-written music. If it doesn't have a music video that's over-choreographered, an expensive set design, half-naked girls, and a beat produced by Missy, the Neptunes, Lil' Jon, or P. Diddy, the youngins won't buy it. They rely solely on visual input now. Prince doesn't borrow, or is it called "sampling" now, enough beats to entertain the little idiots. He's still the best there is IMO. These kids are just followers. I weep for the future.

Get yourself 'Aquemini' by OutKast. An absolutely stunning album. I'm sure you'll love it.

With regard to to pure Prince (no mixes) being played in the clubs, put on 'Erotic City'. The audience probably wont recognise it, but i'm sure they'll dance wink

It's the natural cycle of pop music.

Prince has had his time as a 'cool new thing', now he's doing the commercial comeback thing.

I probably would do better in chicago, it seems to still have the most Prince fans.. The songs that get them going now are the top hits usually- 50 Cent, Lil Jon, Llloyd Banks, G-Unit, etc.

It's all pretty much mid tempo thuggin shit that I think is OK but wears thin fast, like Outkast's songs... "roses" and "Hey Ya" are over within one month they're so damn repetitive..

The best reaction I've got from a Prince song was either Kiss or Erotic City..

I think he's cool in the sense that "Led Zepplin" or "George Clinton" was cool back in the last 80s. Kind of in that respected, novelty, cool--but not hip.

A Jehova witness, promising not to swear, and playing old skool tunes isn't a 20 something's idea of cool. Yes, I understand that there are alot of fans of Prince in their 20's but they're not the majority.
