the great SOTT question....

what do u like better; disc 1 or disc 2?

i have owned this album for over 10 years and i still can’t decide.
disc 2 has the wonderful adore with it's brilliant vocals, but then disc 1 has forever in my life. IGBABN is 2 funky but then so is housequake. the fantastic lyrics and uniqueness of IIWYG is almost matched by TBODP. starfish and coffee is a lovely simple song. slow love is enough 2 seduce anyone (well enough 2 seduce me anyway wink). SOTT may paint a bleak picture but this is balanced by the hopefulness of the cross. play in the sunshine is poppy and upbeat along with u got the look. it and hot thing r fab, but so r strange relationship and ICNTTPOYM.
i can’t really say I have ever preferred 1 disc over another.
what do u all think?

I guess I tend to view 'Sign' in terms of four sides. When I first purchased it, it was on album instead of CD. The tracks were:

Side 1 - Sign O' The Times, Play In The Sunshine, Housequake, The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker

Side 2 - It, Starfish and Coffee, Slow Love, Hot Thing, Forever In My Life

Side 3 - U Got The Look, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Strange Relationship, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man

Side 4 - The Cross, It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night, Adore

With that in mind, Side 1 may be the best album side of music Prince has ever recorded, rivaled only by Side 1 of 1999 and Side 2 of Dirty Mind.

Typically, most double record sets are going to have some lulls in them. Criticism will run especially high when the artist is as eclectic a performer as Prince. Side 2 of 'Sign' I always thought was a relatively weak group of songs. I do like 'Forever In My Life', but nothing else really stands out on that side, IMO.

As the CD format goes, it is only the presence of the Side 2 record material that makes Disc 2 a stronger set.

IMPOSSIBLE QUESTION!

don't do this to me. i love it all, it's the most wonderful landscape he's ever put together. it all fits, i'm down on my knees weeping, weeping with pure joy and abstract love...

I think that this cd is right up there with 1999, Purple Rain,Dirty Mind. It is great music.

i like both but if "IT"(which i dont like) had been replaced by J.I.P it would have even more "good-er" than it was before!.

Anxiety

I prefer disc 1 (or, for all you vinylheads out there, disc 1, side 1).

But I have to say, when I'm in the mood to hear disc 2, I'm REALLY in the mood to hear disc 2.

Many will say Purple Rain is the best....but my money will always be on Sign O' The Times. LOADED!!
Damn, almost forgot about Emancipation, and The Rainbow Children....oh well, it's a good thing i don't have to chose between all those classics...got'em all.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

It is nearly impossible to choose just one album as my favorite.

But, if I had to choose just ONE, it would be SOTT. If I had to break it down even more, I would say disc 1, side 1, is probably the best work Prince has ever created, or close to it.

You can listen to this album all the way through and probably never get tired of it.

I can't even think of SOTT in terms of discs (I've only ever had it on record).

Overall I prefer the 1st record, but in order of sides I would say:

Record 1, Side 1
Record 2, Side 2
Record 2, Side 1
Record 1, Side 1.

I've actually never listened to it in that order. I think I'll try when I get home.

I agree w/ the above post...

Record 3 is best...the album as the whole is a MASTERPIECE but I find my self lovin record 3 the best

"U Got The Look"
"If I Was Your Girlfriend"
"Strange Relationship"
"I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man" -(one of the most infectous songs ever written! Jordan Knight ruined it!)

I prefer Side one. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood for The Cross and U Got the Look is somewhat overrated. Side one is unbelievable throughout, including It.

Also for me record 3
...simply because on it there are the two songs I will never be tired of...
"If I was your girlfriend" and "I could never take the place of your man"
