The aborted Crystal Ball Vol. II project and the 1980-1981 outtakes

I was reading The Vault this morning, and reading through the unreleased tracks from 1980-1981, I was surprised how many of them were on the list for the Crystal Ball Vol. II project voted on by fans at the 2000 Celebration. I've seen the list of tracks before, but I never placed them as mostly from this era (tracks like American Jam, She's Just A Baby... etc.)

Could someone list all the proposed tracks that were voted on (since I don't see this in The Vault)? How come Prince, in 2000, was suddenly enthralled by his 1980-1981 period?

Boris, o font of wisdom, do you know how far this project got? Did anything happen after the vote at the celebration? Were other tracks considered in addition to those listed for voting? Was this a 2CD set, 3CD...? Was there a different name for it other than Crystal Ball Vol. II? Were Girl and (Gotta Stop) Messin' About different than the B-sides?

I'd love to see a full online resource with everything that's known about Prince's unreleased projects. I have no time right now, but if someone else wanted to do it I'd cheer them on wink

It has crossed my mind, just because of the constant "what is the Camille/Crystal Ball tracklists?" questions that keep popping up.

I registered a great domain name a while back, but I never got round to working on it, anyone got any ideas for stuff they'd like to see on a comprehensive online Prince FAQ?

This probably seems redundant but a complete international discography, including single releases, would be nice.

Hey! just looking at that list and it appears to be just randomly taken from his list of unreleased songs - It's in alphabetical order for one thing so this isn't an album sequence. It's like someone (prince maybe?) looked thru the list of vault tracks and quickly selected 23 songs from that list that sounded good. This leads me to believe it was never anything more than a list of randomly selected songs!

Although it does look rather tasty!

It was selected by fans at the Celebration voting on which ones they wanted. Hence the "random" look and the alphabetical order

Does anyone remember what other songs were on the list to choose from?

That's the complete list.

22 songs, of which the top 17 were supposed to make it onto the album.

Though from what I heard, Prince had virtually finished sequencing the album before
he gave fans the chance to vote on the tracks (and anyway, how can you honestly vote for
tracks that most people have never heard?)

Boris, was the album only a 17-track album, then, or were other tracks not on this list already 'lock-ins' for the album?

It was going to be longer than 17 tracks, though I've heard conflicting rumors about it being
another 30 track 3CD set, or just a 20 track 2CD set (I'm inclined to believe the 2CD theory,
due to what I heard about 'how' it was gonna be released)

I remember voting at the 2000 Celebration, but it was for different projects. We had a list to choose from like: Should Prince's next release be A) A guitar driven record? B) A piano album? C) A release of Vault material?, etc.

Am I on crack? I swear that this was the vote. There was a table full of iMacs. Help me remember, somebody...

Yeah, Boris, how was it going to be released? PLEASE explain!!!!

This is one of those projects where it makes me want to cry just thinking about how close it came to being released. mad

You're not imagining things, you could indeed vote at the 2000 Celebration for what you
wanted Prince's next album to be. There were 8 choices:

1. Crystal Ball II (you could pick 17 tracks from a list of 22 to be included on the final release)
2. Roadhouse Garden (Prince and the Revolution album)
3. Live Album (you could pick which era you wanted it to be from)
4. Rock Guitar Record
5. Madrid 2 Chicago (Smooth Jazz Album)
6. When 2 R In Love (Compilation of Ballads)
7. Collection Of Cover Versions
8. New Studio Album (you could pick what style of music you wanted it to be)

If I remember rightly, the winner was 'Rock Guitar Record'... I wonder what happened to that!

I certainly got the impression that the first 7 choices were pretty much already in the can
when the vote took place. And of course, all them them are still gathering dust in the vault.

No who in the duck would vote for the compilation of ballads over new music? I hope that came last in the voting...

And Boris, how was Crystal Ball II going to be released? Through the NPGMC, perhaps?

From what I heard, the idea was that Crystal Ball II would be in-effect discs 4 & 5 of the (now)
5 disc set. The CD's would be shipped with cases for 'The Truth' and 'Kamasutra', plus a
booklet for Crystal Ball which covered all 5 discs (hence why there was no booklet supplied
with the original 5 disc version). This would only be available by mail/online order from NPG.
The idea being that fans would already have the 5 disc round case version, and would replace
The Truth & Kamasutra with Crystal Ball discs 4 & 5 and the new booklet. Then they could put
their Kamasutra & The Truth discs into their new stand alone cases.

There were also plans to release a video compilation of tracks from Crystal Ball, but like
the Crystal Ball II CD, this was shelved.

Hmm, I love that idea! I'd like to have official cases for The Truth and Kamasutra, and I'd like a real booklet for CB. I'm guessing that there would have been 20 tracks in total, then...

Too bad it never happened... sad

I thought this could potentially be a good addition for prince.org, and I posted a thread in site discussion awhile back about adding an area to the site where members could create pages to document prince-related knowledge: http://www.prince.org/msg/3/101822

A few people, including some mods, expressed interest, but I don't know if Ben ever saw it. If my idea sounds good, post a reply to that thread and maybe something will happen eventually...
