A case for COME...?

Okay, so I really respect the opinions of you hardcore Prince fans and fellow orgers, so I think maybe you can convert me on this one...

After having read the amazing thread on the various configurations of the "Come" album, it dawned on me how important and enjoyable this period of Prince's work is to some of you, and yet I'm left feeling that "Come" is about the ONLY Prince album that I struggle to play out of my collection of EVERY official Prince release!!! There are other Prince albums I don't love a whole lot, but each of them has a number of songs I like--"Come"? Hard for me to really stick up for any.

Frankly, it kind of bums me out. So I thought, since this disc has been a hot topic here, that some of you who are fans of "Come" could share your passion for this album with me. Not saying I could ever come to find it a favorite, but maybe you could at least get me to PLAY it once in awhile...

Why do you like "Come" so much? What am I missing/overlooking/ignoring?

Thanks...seriously.

I don't really know why I love Come (I damn near adore Come), but it's interesting that I do, because I'm not an obsessee of all of his music. I used to be, until my tastes were broadened by friends and many of you fine orgers smile.

Anyways, I don't like D&P, or Grafitti Bridge, or Emancipation or Musicology (with of course, exceptional songs on each of these), but Come strikes me as a very good cohesive album.

I know it's pretty much comprised of leftovers, but it's so dark and moody, with some very soulful, pseudo-spiritual sounds and grooves, some really rich layering, and some very unique and effective production work on it. It's slightly strange, yet I feel it's mainstream enough to still play it at clubs today which says something being that it was made 11 years ago. It's almost gothic. It's just a good album. Even with a song like Solo, I feel a sort of vulnerability in his voice that I have seldom if ever heard on any of his other songs. And Orgasm, well, I don't like it, but I can't imagine the album without it! On the Vault (which I also quite like), My Little Pill is a sort of "orgasmish" toss off, but it doesn't seem to belong on the album, so this is rather unique.

I must admit, my favorite period of his music has been from 1992 - present. He has been probing and searching and playing with sounds and styles, and his musically journey has just been very interesting to me. Maybe that's because I'm a "new" fan (converted in approx '93), but even this doesn't make sense, because all of my other favourite music is classic. Classic Jazz, Classic Rock, Classic Funk, etc. I just think it's been a wild journey these last 12 years, and Come was really the start of it, especially considering how much it was played in the Beautiful Experience video, which has a very interesting history of its own.

Come is better than people give it credit for, really. smile

"Come" - besides giving me a moment while driving once eek I just dig this cut, gotta love him when he's being nasty horny

"Space" - the universal love remix of this is the best but the album version is very cool. Just gives you an all around feeling of love & spirit & joy IMO...

"Pheromone" - again, gotta love him when he's being nasty, slightly twisted too. Me likes drool

Then I start hitting skip here & there, but...

"Papa" - this song is just angry & raw, always makes me wanna hear What's My Name b/c of the nature of it. Pretty sad, I like songs that kick me in the throat sometimes...

"Dark" - very nice, sad, so much feeling here...

"Solo" - this song can send me over the edge when I'm in the right mood. It's gotta be the loneliest songs he's ever made. It can rip your guts out if you let it.

There's a ton of different feelings explored on this album - lust, sadness, loneliness, anger - I just find it really interesting, viceral, naked... Me likes mushy

Anxiety

When I first bought this CD in 1994, I didn't care much for it. I kinda liked Papa and I liked Loose!, but the rest left me really cold and I thought it was a half-hearted attempt at a contractual obligation that he phoned in to Warners.

Fast forward to five years later, when I'm sitting around bored and broke and digging through music I never listen to. Just on a whim, I pop in the Come album. And suddenly, don't ask me how, don't ask me why - it clicks. I freakin' LOVE the album from beginning to end.

To me, this record is no frills, down to business, I-don't-give-a-shit Prince. There are no barriers between the strength of his genius and your ears. To me, it's his darkest and most emotional album...and the man can crank out an emotional album when he wants. The vocals on this album are simply amazing. The songwriting is so dense and complex, it may well be his last album to elicit multiple "WTF??" moments.

I can't praise this album enough. In my top 5 faves, easily.

I think Come is one of his most underrated albums. I understand it's not for everyone, but I really enjoy it. I understand why he wrote it and where he was at in his life at the time. The songs Come and Space are songs that only can be created by no one other than our genius Prince.

For me Come was the first time I had witnessed something from Prince that has becom quite common now...an album where it appears that not as many editing choices have been made...at the expense of quality.

Liek I said it was,for me, only the start of this phase so it wasnt to severe...but Come is too long and Orgasm is pointless. I know all albums have trax that peopel don't like but,for me, this was teh first time where it wasnt that I didnt like the song...its just that even I could see how they could be better.

Having said that, without come we wouldnt have Space or Universal Love.....beautiful trax and still some of my favs of Princes entire work

COME and PARADE are my favorites as well. I'm a dancer, so the first thing that I notice about an album is it's danceability, and COME has some serious danceability. Beyond that, it is a deep, dark album, and I always feel like he's telling me a story when I listen to it. It's an album you have to let yourself FEEL--it's not at its best as background music.

Come is probably the best flowing album Prince had in the mid 90's. It has a great laid back vibe to it, like Prince was saying "I'm Prince, Bitch!" Plus Loose! will have you shaking your mutha-fucking do. Listen to all the songs and think of a girl that you've always wanted but played hard to get. That should get you in the mood!

confused I don't like the whole album... But I love the feel of the title track,Come -- especially the way the horns work in and out of the rhythm, particularly in the last 3 minutes of the song...

I love the airy feel of Space, and Dark sounds like a classic , laid back Prince tune, with the horns one again capping everything off...Papa and Solo just seem like some of those odd, interesting moments in the middle of a prince album, and I love the slouching funk of Let it Go...

...the rest of the album I don't really care about...

Come is one of those albums that I would listen to and probably get nostalgic about but I didn't like it much then. The whole era was just so bitter and ugly. Here you had Prince, only three years removed from the popular resurgence of Diamonds and Pearls becoming the biggest laughingstock witht he name change and the Warners battle. And Prince did nothing to promote it, no videos, no push on radio. So you were dealing with this album that felt very obligatory and nonspontaneous and an artist who (at the time) we had no f$%#ing idea what he was doing. The album doesn't work as a whole because it does just seem like a collection of songs thrown together to fulfill a contract. But certain songs on the CD were prett damn good.

Songs I really enjoyed on Come would include: Letitgo (a funky, brutally honest song that would have been a big hit if not for the ugliness); Dark (good mid-90's ballad); Pheremone (kinda funky but lyrics are jackass); Space (love the Universal Mix much more than the album version and the acoustic version is lovely); and Loose (great party song, better if you're drunk).

Didn't dig: Solo (it was pretty damn low); Papa (just kinda makes me feel icky); Race (nice sentiment but poor execution); and Orgasm (not really anything other than a weak guitar solo).

The thing is I thought Come was going to be the man's career low point but Chaos and Disorder, New Power Sould, and Rave were still to come.

I think I'm going to pop the CD in now...
All good things they say never last...

This is one of my favorite Prince albums. Unlike most other people, I never felt that the material here was just filler to fullfill a contract. It always felt sincere and true, never fake. The thing that always struck me about this album is that this is the music Prince chose to die to. It was the last "Prince" album until the new millenium when he reclaimed his name. This is the way Prince chose to sign off. It spans from Jazzy flair to the act that brings about life and love. As a longtime fan, for 25 years now, it was intriguing, shocking and baffling picking up the newest Prince album to see those 2 dates signifying his birth and death. I know I wasn't alone in thinking WTF? confuse The album has Prince standing in front of what looks like the gate to a haunted house, extending his cane almost daring you to come with him on a journey.

You can take the song titles and see that they represent pieces to the puzzle of life:

Come - The seed without which there would be no life.
Space - The place where the seed grows.
Pheremone - Non detectable scent that drives 2 people into lust for one another, driving them together into the act of creation.
Loose - Hopefully it won't be like throwing a hot dog down a hallway wink
Papa - One half of the puzzle.
Race - You can't get there fast enough.
Dark - The place nobody wants to go.
Solo - Alone....without connection.
Letitgo - Giving in to the experience.
Orgasm - Expression of love to both it's final destination and it's beginning.

I have always loved this record (lol, you can tell who us old schoolers are, still using "album" and "record" to describe a cd . Remember 8 tracks? smile ) At the time this came out I was at the end of a horrifying relationship. This album brought so much to my life. Solo is one of my all time favorite tracks because I related to how low the man felt. I was in the loneliest space and it really helped me to own a song that truly told the story I was living. There is so much to love about this album.

Dig through the song Pheremone to the story. What the hell is going on? This is probably the strangest scene Prince has ever created. Watching in on 2 people fucking around and the shit that goes down. The guy tripping the chick, the chick knowing Prince is watching, her pointing a pistol to the dudes nose while a tear heads down towards her smile. Honestly....what the fuck is going on here? shocked

You just gotta love this lyric:

Like a splendid
open-ended
celibate friend
pretendin
not to know it
when I blow it
in your eyes

This album embodies both hopelesness and hope. Songs like Solo, Dark and Papa leave you feeling the sadness and darkness, yet songs like Come, Race, Space & Letitgo wash you clean, leaving the feeling of total hope. Don't try and force this album. Just let it come....."When I blow that mind baby, I'm gonna drive you crazy.....Come"

And I know I'm not the only one out there who thought their neighbor was bangin the door down while playing Loose. There is this sound in the song at 1:50-1:53 that sounds like knocking. I can't tell you how many times I stopped the song at that point to answer my door only to find nobody standing there biggrin

Best case I've heard. thumbs up!
When I first heard the album, I thought it was pretty cohesive in it's sound. The lyrics are indeed fascinating. For me, Letitgo seemed like the "song that explains it all".

Ready or not, here I come
(come on)
(come on)
All my life I’ve kept my feelings deep inside
Never was a reason 2 let somebody know
Lover here, lover there - who cried? who cared? foolish pride
Never was a good seat at any of this man’s shows

Until now all I wanted 2 do is
Do do do what I do, and
Bang bang bang on the drummer
And love so-and-so

But now I’ve got 2 letitgo (letitgo)
Lay back and let the vibe just flow
I wanna just letitgo (letitgo)
Lay back and let my feelings show
(letitgo)
I’m ready 4 the real
Give me something I can feel

All my life this heart’s been under lock and key
My curtains were drawn there wasn’t nobody home
Trigger here, trigger there - everybody’s high except 4 me
Better off dead if I couldn’t be alone

Until now all I wanted 2 do is
Do do do what I do, and
Bang bang bang on the drummer
And love so-and-so

But now I’ve got 2 letitgo (letitgo)
Lay back and let the vibe just flow
I wanna just letitgo (letitgo)
Lay back and let my feelings show
I, I’m ready 4 the real
Give me something I can feel

4teen years and tears I’ve longed 2 sing my song
But a horse couldn’t drag your ass 2 put me on
But now I’ve got an army and we’re three million strong
This song will ring in your ears when we are gone

Until now all I wanted 2 do is
Do do do what I do, and
Bang bang bang on the drummer
And love so-and-so

But now I want 2 letitgo (letitgo)
Lay back and let the vibe just flow
Said I want 2 letitgo (letitgo)
Lay back and let the feelings show

I am ready 4 the real (come a little closer)

Aside from being one of Prince's most amazing and beautiful vocals, the lyrics to Solo....

So low, the curb looks like a skyscraper
So high, the stars are underneath

So quiet.....I can hear the blood rushing through veins
So low....I feel like I'm going insane

It's gonna be so hard to hear my voice, if I ever learn once more to speak.
I'm so lost, no-one can find me. I've been lookin for so long but now I'm done.
I'm solo. My name is no-one

WOW! That is as lonely as lonely can get. I think this is the most naked he's ever been cry
