Batusi, The - Arthur Murray, owner of The Arthur Murray Dance Studios, invented the "Batusi" dance for the fantasy adventure BATMAN/ABC/1966-68. The Batusi was first performed at a posh cocktail party held at Harlow's an "In" discotheque in New York City. The Batusi became a national craze after being introduced by Batman (Adam West) and Molly (Jill St. John) on the premiere episode of BATMAN. "You swing a pretty mean cape" complimented Molly, henchwoman of the Riddler. "It's nothing," replied Batman. The show's musical theme by Neal Hefti also soared to the top of the charts within weeks. In the Quentin Tarantino film Pulp Fiction (1995), a dance scene between actors John Travolta and Uma Thurman resurrected the Batusi dance steps (especially the dance's trademark moving of the index and middle finger-spread open in a "V" shape-across the face as to make a mask over the eyes).
