They forced him on stage to sing the song with them, but prince didn't want to do it.
So since he was forced to be onstage and didn't want to sing, he rebelled by sucking on a lollipop and standing there acting stupid.

I hardly call it "genius." For me, it is truly one of his lowest points. He was already considered childish for changing his name to a symbol. Toss in this behavior and everyone just thought he was just a fucking nutball. Lipsynchin', lollipop suckin' nutball (at the '95 AMAs, that is).

I think it was his form of protest...now before you go on about protesting feeding hungry afircans...thats not what im saying.

if you watch the clip you'll see dozens of celebrities run up on stage and they didnt know the lyrics...but they wanna show they're "doing good in the public eye". Well whats worse...faking it? or doing your own thing without the publicity?

Exactly.

I think it's Anita Baker mouthing words and thrn laughing at the person beside her cuz she dont have a clue, but "oh well im on tv helping"

He didnt see a point to it back then, the big circle jerk, so why should he do it now?

I dont think its genius, but it goes well with the attitude.

It was just the kind of person he was back then U know?? I'm sure if something like that happened now...He would do it. But he was considered back in the day in his own words "a petulant brat" and a "megalomaniac" smile

I agree. I like him for not participation the first time in 1985. I'm not saying that the participants are all hypocritical but there are people that will support causes strictly for recognition and praise. True enough, the good they are doing is wonderful but so many people do it strictly because "it is the right thing to do" or they want people to talk about them and say "oh you're so wonderful". I know people like that in everyday life and they get on my last nerve. They go to church every Sunday and go to Hell on Monday.

Prince contributed his song "4 The Tears In Your Eyes" to the album. I have heard of the money he has given to schools and charities. Prince, from day one, has let you know he can do everything by himself and does not need the help of anyone else. Beginning with the "Dirty Mind" era, he has been the rebel of funk/rock. To record the song "We Are The World" with a room full of people, goes against his whole rebellious image.

As for the 1995 awards show and the 10th Anniversary of "We Are The World", it was wrong for them to want him to participate when they knew how he felt about it from the first time. I don't blame him one bit.
Andy is a four letter word.
