Prince "Special Edition" songs? It's sort of stupid, but I'm still curious about this: let's say Prince goes George Lucas on our asses (that sounded wrong) and decides to redo certain songs on CDs to "modernize" them (like Lucas did with his Star Wars films). Which songs do YOU think sound too 80s to make it with the kids today? How could he make them more modern without taking away what made them so great in the first place?

The only songs I can think of that would perhaps benefit from this approach are his earlier
'rock' sounding songs like Bambi When U Were Mine Just cause he plays some mean ass guitar right now and the way those songs come off live right now, I think re-worked studioversions might be exquisite. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I was thinking When U Were Mine, also. Take Me With U couldn't really get any worse. I'd LOVE to hear him tear through a modernized version of Sister (I love the original, but he could really work magic with his current guitar playing added to that song). I had something else in mind, but for some reason it's not coming to me, right now. Luv & Peace, Alex Clubbin' in Mpls/A Night w. Prince

Any of y'all hear the Space Cowboy 12" mix of I Would Die 4 U? A bit cheesy, but not too bad at all. That's probably what they'd sound like.

Luv & Peace, Alex Clubbin' in Mpls/A Night w. Prince I didn't even scroll down for this one...Um have you heard what he did to 1999? In the words of Senior Beavis...it was a "M-M-Massacre!" He has updated Pop Life...it's ok. Starfish and Coffee...um just ok again. Usually his updates sound over produced. I prefer an "update" live in concert. I was saying IF Prince went George Lucas and decided to make "Special Edition" version of his songs, which songs do you think he could improve on. At least, which songs could he change without bothering you? I think he has a lot of great songs that are hurt by their 80's sound. If you LOVE the 80's sound, that's probably good. But some of us moved into the 21st Century. And yes, the Beatles have a 60's sound, etc., but the 80's had a VERY distinctive sound and lots of people (myself included, outside of Prince and a few other performers) HATED it... even during the 80s. I'd welcome Prince updating (if he did it properly) 8 or 9 of his greatest hits. He has proven that he can do it, because a lot of his songs are better, and more modern sounding, in concert. I think the 1999 update he did is a poor example, because he was doing that to exploit the fact that it was 1999 and he could sell a few CDs. Luv & Peace, Alex Clubbin' in Mpls/A Night w. Actually it doesn't bother me if Prince re-records all his songs (which incidentally he has already
done). It doesn't stop anyone from still listening to the originals, or 'replace' them. Though IMHO it's only really worth doing if he's going to change them substanstially, like he sometimes does in concert.

Update on prince songs eh? well then lets see.....
I DON'T THINK SOOOOO Concerts are the place to hear upbeat or changed versions of songs. He done it at lovesexy, diamonds and pearls tour (gett off which was very nice). Prince is Prince and his songs should stay the same. ALWAYS

Prince is Prince and his songs should stay the same. ALWAYS AAAAAHHH!!! I'm not saying the songs would be changed forever. There would just be 2 versions, out there. I don't think any of us have forgotten the 1999 that came out in 1982, even though a new version came out in 1999. On the other hand, the new version is pretty much forgotten. I'm asking what songs do you think could be IMPROVED? If you love the 80's sound, you're going to say "none." If you got into Prince later, you'll probably have a few. I became a Prince fan in '82 or '83 and STILL think some of the songs sound too 80s. Nothing after Purple Rain, but from "For You" through "Purple Rain," there were songs that sound VERY 80s. Not like Tears for Fears (puke, barf, vomit), but almost anyone could hear them once and say, "they came from the 80s." Personally, I couldn't stand most mainstream music IN the 80s. I basically despised the decade I came of age in. I hated the politics (Reagan republican junk) and I wanted to strangle most of the musicians. I loved Prince, a couple of big metal bands and that's about it. Luv & Peace, Alex Clubbin' in Mpls/A Night w. Prince
