Ever been embarrassed?

I remember when I was back at school, I must have been 16 years old, and Prince came out with his new record COME. Damn, I was psyched to pick it up, especially having been caught up in the whole WB struggle and all this funked out new music just waiting to be released. So, I head to the record store and ask the rep when the new Prince album was due. He looks it up on his computer, finds nothing and asks what it's called. I tell him COME, trying to not make too much of an issue of the word. He tyopes it in, and says, no, nothing's coming up. How do you spell it? I said, C, O. M, E. He says, oh. I, again, try to swiftly deflect matters by asking whether there's a release date or not. It's out next week, he says, then you'll be able to get hold of COME. He laughs, I walk out thinking, what a fucking' moron'. And thinking, Prince you're a cheeky little bitch for releasing under that title!

What about you lot - any embarrassing experiences??

I think that's all part of being a Prince fan. You just have to accept that other people just don't get it. My most embarresing moment was when I had a girl over and she wanted to see my room (as girls do!). I was like "No, the whole house is empty, why do you want to see my room?". But she insisted, and of course my room is FULL of Prince CDs, LPs, cassettes, posters, you name it!. She knew I was a fan but when she saw all that she just laughed! I could see the funny side, but I was like "Damn!"

In high school, LoveSexy came out and I was a little embarrassed about the cover. Being a little geeky back then, I always tried to keep a low profile. But there was this guy named "Dino" who was a track star, famous around the school, an all-around classy guy that no one would dare mess with, and he was a Prince fan. He showed no shame with LoveSexy; if anyone gave him any crap, he just gave them the finger, in his usual polite manner. And after seeing that, I never felt bad about it again...

I think we've all had our Lovesexy moments. My parents were disgusted when I first bought it. The cover came up at the Org once while I was browsing at school and the librarian threw me out. Then I bought the songbook, which I brought to school to play on their piano. Various students and teachers accused me of posessing male pornography. Then I decided to sell the book cause the transcriptions were all so bad. When I took it to the post office to get a shipping quote, I got shocked looks from the postal office workers. rolleyes

It wasn't really me that was embarrassed, but my poor ol' Mum. I was away with my school on some trip when Lovesexy came out, and I left her explicit instructions to get it for me on the day of release, and on vinyl.

I got back from the trip, quivering with anticipation of a new Prince record, when she presented it to me. She hadn't realised what the cover pic was going to be and when she saw it she was horrified, and after getting some very strange looks walking through the town with it in a bag, she returned to the shop and asked them to re-bag it. When I got it it had 7 bags around it.

I haven't asked her to get me anymore stuff!!!

Australia. I'm not ashamed at all, I really don't think the cover is that bad. It's tacky yet tasteful, naked yet discreet all at once. People around me seem to think otherwise.

Oh, and I've played "Come" in the car with my parents. I took it off when it got to "my tongue in the crease". eek biggrin

Yes, I had the Lovesexy album poster on my wall at university and the gay jibes came in. Couldn't care less though!

no. my dad didn't mind me listenin to prince--he knew what he was all about, but still didn't care about me listenin to his stuff.

as for school and all that, my peers actually admired me for goin against the grain and not listenin to what everyone else was listenin to. the most i'd hear from anyone when they knew i liked p was "is he gay?" bored

When Lovesexy came out, I tried to get my older sister to buy it for me because of the naked-on-a-tulip cover, but she actually got mad even at the suggestion, screaming, "If you like him enough to listen to him then you like him enough to admit it!"

Whatever, Jaime. wink

So I sucked it up and bought it....which was embarrassing to my 13-year-old Ohio-boy ass, but I promptly forgot the embarrassment as soon as I popped it in my player, good GOD. I've never felt that way about an album the first time I listened to it prior or since...it was like a message from a funky God.

Of course now I have the poster of that nude shot hanging in my bedroom, so I got over my bashfulness and then some.

I remember my mom rocking out to "Jack U Off" on several occassions (back then, I had to play my vinyl in the living room.) One day she actually listened to the words and she freaked out because she thought I may want to "jack off" other guys. It took two hours of interrogation by both parents for me to convince them that it was merely a great song with dirty lryics and nothing more... sigh

Ohhhh but o' course!
I remember I was sitting in my room one day listening 2 When DOves Cry and I forgot I didn't lock my door 2 my bedroom and my older brother comes a-bustin in the joint like he OWNS it. And caught me in my most horrific moment--Lip synching the song and dancing around like a freekin' IDIOT! It didn't help that he got my other older brother in there 2 tease and taunt me. If they didn't like Prince I don't know what I would have done.... pout

My first attempt at buying "Dirty Mind" failed when I saw the cover. I got worried that the cashier in the music department at Kmart would think I was buying it JUST for the cover so I opted for "Controversy" instead. What can I say, I was a homophobic little 10 year old. I conquered my fear a week later and bought it at the same Kmart. woot!

I was in the car with my mom. I didn't really know "Purple Rain" that well at the time, so I didn't know that I should have turned it off at "Darling Nikki". Well, the tune played. We both sat in awkward silence, listening to the lyrics. When it was over, my mom decided that was the moment to have the talk every teenager dreads: the sex talk with your mom!! Man, that was an awkward car ride. If I had been playing Steely Dan, the tunes would have been just as erotic, but it would have been so subtle, she wouldn't have got it.
