That "cu-cu" drum machine sound....

It seems like it's always been with Prince's beat and productions. Y'all know what I mean. Think of any old school Prince song...I don't know....say...."1999". That "cu-cu" sound that's apart of the drumbeat is something that Prince uses a lot. What is it? Or rather, what is the name of that function on that drum machine?

It always sounded like a rim shot that was pitched down to me. Could be wrong though.

Yes, it's a rim shot, pitched down with a little flanger on it. Sometimes it's combined with a handclap (pitched up or down). He uses flanger a lot (think the hihat on She's Always In My Hair).

Don't know what a "cu cu" sound is, but I believe you're talking about the rim shot.

I don't know what "cu-cu" sound you're talking about but I love the drum machine he was using at that time. That era was my favorite.

This dude sells .wav samples on CD, made directly from a rare Linn LM1.
Kinda cool for any musicians trying to recreate those wonderful sounds from way back.

Thanks guys. thumbs up! Some of y'all might've been confused as to what I was talking about. But I was simply describing how that drum machine effect sounded to me.

I'd really like to know how programming with the linn works. Just can't picture how to do it.
