I sure don't like Tony either, and boy were us Swedes relieved when they were on tour and did a show here in Stockholm and Prince gave the boys the night off, we didn't have 2 see them! That was great, and I have yet another reason to thank Prince, as if his music isn't enough already...

lol lol...

You certainly can't view Tony M. as a "credible" rapper, but if you look at his bits on various songs as part of the over all "song" like a percussion instrument or a keyboard part or something, he does sort of "complete" some of the tracks on the above mentioned CDs.
Clearly he could NOT carry it off on his own ("GoldNigga" comes to mind!)but for his "parts" on certain songs, he is as essential as those grating Wendy and Lisa background vocals on so many Revolution tracks.

Just agree we that Tony is good on that album, tho I think he was pretty too noisy on the live concerts where he appeared, but that was maybe out of subject, just thought I would need to say that... huh

Just take a listen to "No Black Motherfuckers In The House", and you will see that Tony M. is an awesome rapper. He really contributed a lot to Prince during the early 90's, and was very instrumental to the new sound that Prince was projecting to his listening audience at the time. I hate to see that he was excluded, but when I think of it, Prince never keeps the same band around for long. I think it kind of puts a damper on his creativity so he starts over. Nevertheless, Tony M. was and is a great rapper.

i have often wished that the symbol album would have been recorded without tony... the only instance of tony m that does not annoy the piss out of me is "the max"... everything else is awful... every other rap he does on that album could have been done a million times better by another rapper... and there are a ton of rappers that would have loved to do it...

i think the song that he flaws the most is "2 the 9's"... i kept hoping that prince would release a cd single with the the tony m shit edited out of that song... still hoping, actually...

i do think that tony m does sound better on the symbol album than he does on "diamonds and pearls" though... i almost never listen to "d&P" because he fucks it up too badly... and it's a shame, because the good songs on that cd are friggin awesome...

and to the person that said "imagine "NPS" with tony m"... the cd would have gone from trivial and uninspired (with the exception of a few good tunes) to trivial, uninspired, and embarrasingly unlistenable... doug e. fresh does a damn good job on that cd... they could have used him more, but there was no room for tony m...

it's like that guy from the fonky bald heads... "the daisy chain" is one of my favorite npgmc songs, but it could have been so much better with a guy who can actually rap...

but anyway... i still love the symbol... think i'm gonna break it out now and listen...

no not his best work, but O+> is a very cool album! 3 chains o' gold was very unique, i like it alot,"and God created woman"was cool too....i was always surprised in the past when i heard people put down the music....i always loved listening to the music on that cd/album.

Xenophobiac said:

What xactly is it that U people like about the 0(+> album?

I find it pretentious, boring and over-done.

There are only a few songs on there that are any good and those r mainly the ballads that Prince can do in his sleep.

7 was a cool song. And "The Sacrifice of Victor" was pretty cool, if only 4 the auto-bio lyrics.

U can't seriously tell me that U find songs like

Arrogance
The Flow
3 Chains O Gold
I Wanna Melt With U
Blue Light

to be amongst his best work of the 1990's, right?????

And what about a songs like "My Name Is Prince"? That's something a group like 'Steps' do, resorting 2 stating their own name in songs 4 about 45 times in less then 3mins.

I've had the album lying around here ever since it was released and I gave it numerous listens but I still don't really like it.

It's a complete grab-bag of Kitsch.

Not 2 mention the preposterous video that was released 2 go with the album. Oh my god.

I mean, I'm gay, and the only thing I like about that whole 3 chains of gold video was watching Mayte. I think that says it all, right there

I thought Tony M had some good moments, I liked him on The Max. I think the fact that I'd have to see his man-boobs jiggle around when he took his shirt off in concert was disturbing though.

As someone pointed out,the 'Love Symbol' CD was FILLED with songs that should have been singles. It's a damn shame that "The Continental" and "And God Created Woman" weren't released as singles!! Hell, even "The Max" coulda been an R&B smash!

with you on that one David. Was this cd the start of his 'slave' era and battle with warners coming to a head. I guess if the relationship had been rosier or if P had focussed more on making it a longer term project more singles would have been released. Or am i talking out of my butt?.

I have to agree with anyone who's sticking up for Tony.

I liked the guy and liked virtually all of the Prince songs' he's in.

And how many people (Scatman John aside) can rap as fast as him? :p biggrin

I disagree.Tony's contributions to that album are cool.He brings a certain "street/party atmosphere" to the proceedings.Consider....

***"Sexy MF"---The best line in this song is by Tony, when he says "I bet if you throw that ass in the air,it would turn into sunshine"smile

***"The Max"---Tony's lines on the chorus are a nice touch, reminiscent of his contribution to "Gett Off".

***"My Name Is Prince"---Tony's rap here is ferocious and powerful, and since this song was obviously intended for the hip-hop crowd,Tony's presence is justified.

***"Love 2 The 9's"---That little interview/skit thing Tony performs with Mayte is clever....."Who's the President now?...Does it matter, wow!"smile

***"The Flow"---Prince's own rap on this track is kinda lame,so at least Tony redeems the song with his own clever rhymes.

***"The Sacrifice of Victor"---Ok,I admit,Tony sounds out-of-place on this cut. This is a real busy song, with a choir and all,so Tony's rap on the chorus can barely be heard.

I can't see why so many of you think Tony is intrusive, and out-of-place on this album. No,he's not the world's greatest rapper, but he brought alot to the table.I consider 'Love Symbol' to be much more exciting than many of the albums that came after it.Tony had alot to do with that.

It figures that an ass like you would be a fan of Tony M.

It's not STEALING, it's called paying homage. It's no more theft than when Prince 'stole' from Scarface when he said "No, I ain't gonna kill you. Tony, shoot that piece of shit" or "say hello to my little friend"...

Dream, Dream, Dream !!
I wish Prince had listened to himself on "Dead on it" !
If he'd worked with a good rapper it might of been different, but I doubt it. I hate any record that includes a guest rapper in the middle. But that's just me.

I think Tony's rapping fit the sound and vibe Prince was feeling on that album and also D&P. I thought "Sacrifice of Victor" would have been a tremendous hit had he released it.

I like rap, but I'm realy sick of the way R&B has decided to follow Hip Hop instead of the other way around. You can't turn on the radio without hearing either JaRule,
Lil Kim, Nelly, or Mystikal on every damn song on the radio!
I'm waiting on the new single with JaRule and Garth Brooks!

I'm glad that Prince has softened his stance on rap and acknowledges the talent involved to be a good rapper. But he had me scared for a minute that he was going to fall in to the same "I've got to have a rapper on all my songs to sell records" mentatlity that the rest of the music industry seems to be in.
"We can play 4 days! If it get dry, gimme that mayonaise!"
