Prince better between 78 & 93, or between 94 & now ?!

I'm tired of hearing Prince was at his best during the 1st "part" of his career ! Ok, it's beginning 2 change with people realizing he's still a genius, but anyway i think what he did since "The Hits" is at least as good as what he did b4, if not better!

I discovered him & fell in love with his music with the 80's albums & i LOVE this era, but i think he always got better & better even if what he did these last 10 years r may be less innovative in its musical context than the 80's stuff was.

What do u think ?

I love his new music just as much. You really dont think that TRC is his best work ever do you? eek Too each his/her own. I kinda think its his worst ever. worst meaning better than everyone else but still his weakest.....ever

I Love Rainbow Children...I think I heard that Critics didn't like it...Don't Know why...That's a Great album and I can listen to it over and over...It's Spritual and very Uplifting...I Really Dig that album..I Know that Prince and other people who Know me don't get how I can Be so Deeply into Prince and then listen to say Goth and Linkin Park and Limpt Biskit and Rap but well first off Prince was my first Crush I saw him on the Tv screen and was Smitten..Sometimes..I Think Yes,I Lost his Message because well I saw HIm and I thought what a Hot Man and it was just ALWAYS SEX! I Saw Prince as a Very Sexual Being whom made me Sexy...I will Always say and Call him with Intense Affection My GURU...Nobody makes me Dance and Go Crazy like He does...I couldn't care less about even if he could speak...To Me he is the Most Sexiest Man on the Planet and I would Die to Go to Bed with Him..That would be one Night to Remember and well to me the Culmination of Everything Happy and Perfect..To Me being with Prince would be HEAVEN! biggrin

I first came across P music in parties... just like most of us.
Great long mixes of "I would die 4 U+ Baby I'm a Star + America", you know, radio tunes.

When I really start digging his music was with ths Symbol Album. It was the first casset I bought... After that, I HAD to get all his music... As all his material was not really commercial here in Chile, he was mostly OOPrint... Yeah, A classmate in colleage had some "copy of the copy, of the copy... casset" of most of his albums.... God, I still have those cassets somewhere and of course, when I started working I could start buying his CD's. (yeah, much money since he had just released "the Gold Experience")

I'm really sad I missed that "LP crave" many orgers talk about here. wall

So for me, what really cought me was from the symbol album on.

"And god created woman..." pure cream! chair
"America is a continent..."

You're entitled to your opinion, no doubt. And I won't rehash the same ol' song and dance most of us have gone thru about his newer work compared to his early work. But I will say that he was more consistent during his first decade, and he's not the first recording artist to ever fall below the bar he raised for himself, nor will he be the last. That's just the norm for people who have longevity in music. You don't stay in the same place in life 5-10-15 years later, so your work won't always be in that same place either.

But I've noticed that other recording artists aren't as staunchly held to the standard they've set for themselves like Prince is.

Why these years in particular?

To me, Prince was best between 80 and 04, 'cause even though I don't think Musicology is his best album he still kicks it just as good (but different now) live!

Well, here's why:
Purple Rain (+ tour) - Around The World In A Day - Parade (+ tour) - Sign 'O' The Times (+ the best tour eva) - Lovesexy (+ the better than the best tour eva)

And no, I'm not joking. wink

Depends where does Chaos and Disorder fall in? How about New Power Soul.
Those albums were not very good.
I loved the Gold Experience though!
I'd say earlier he was making better albums.
But I still love the stuff in the late 90's and 2000's.
Why is your Organ so small?
I didn't know I was playing in a cathedral.

let's take it a step further... why not just cut it off at his first decade?

i don't think 90% of the devoted admirers of his 80s work would've hung in there between the 1989-2004 years, without the 1978-1988 years...

i'd go a step further to say that 9 out of 10 admirers would've never bought a prince album... or gone to one of his concerts if he had never had the 1978-1988 years...

you can say i'm wrong, but look at the songs he performs in concert. most of them are from 1978-1988... without those songs, he'd be going more covers (which i'm fine with), and still have kirky j, dougie fresh, and tony m still in the band...

Come on now - it's one thing to dig what he is doing now and what he's done since the earlier nineties but the albums from '79 to '88 are essential for me subjectively speaking, and i'd say that (as)objectively (as i can b) he was on top fom between '82 to '88. For all the reasons u'd need to search through past topics as it has all been said so many many times.

If listening won't convince u, maybe listening will.

Definitely '78-'93. For one simple reason. The average music fan cared about him in the first half of his career. After that people lost patience with his "quirkiness". I know many fans will say who cares about the non-diehards? But I'll bet you that Prince wishes that he had been more successful from '94-'04. I think he easily could have been if he had just toned down the weirdness a little bit. I do love some of his '94-'04 work (I love The Gold Experience, Chaos And Disorder and Emancipation) but I think he was much more consistent from '78-'93.

cool He wuz at his best starting in 82 thru 93. I actually find it kind of sad that now, some people finally realized he is a great musician just from a Grammy performance with Beyonce & the guitar solo from the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame thing. Prince likes to keep you at the edge of your seat. He only knows when it's over. It just does not seem like it will be with him. music

If Prince had never existed from the years 1978-1984 and would have come out with "Around The World In A Day" as his first album and continued on the same to the present, I don't think I would have been a Prince fan at all.

The early years and what developed into the "Minneapolis Sound" is what hooked me. After that sound ended, I had to adjust to the new styles. Had I never have been "hooked" to Prince in the first place, I never would have given the new styles a chance. I would have been waiting for Rick James to make a comeback. LOL

That's a tough, tough, tough, tough (did I stress my point, enough?) question. The Rainbow Children is my fave. Prince album. BUT, if I had to pick, I'd have to say 78 to 93, even though I didn't like -- and still don't like -- any Prince album before "Dirty Mind."

Luv & Peace,
Alex
