then this comment yesterday from mtv.com

".Without any tour dates to bolster his album sales — since a portion of every ticket price involuntarily buys a copy (see Billboard Sours On Prince's Musicology Sales Experiment") — Prince's Musicology plummeted 49 spots, from #16 to #64, two weeks ago. However, with last week's five-night run of shows in New York and New Jersey padding his weekly totals, the Purple One will re-enter the top 10 at #8, with more than 74,000 copies sold".

i would say Prince and MTV are on the outs again.....man i fucking hate MTV with a passion

I can't stand MTV, but I don't see the sales comments as a dig. It's the truth really.

This may be blasphemy, but "Call My Name" just isn't a single that catches most people's ear. I found it dreadfully boring.

And the video. Well, it's nice looking but that's about it.

He really needs to just go ahead and release Cinamon Girl or something.
Call My Name just isn't "Single" Material except in adult R&B audiences, and MTV & VH1 have very little intention of catering to that.

Agreed, Call my Name has a great choruc but other than that its a simple ballad. He should have LED off the album with Cinnamon Girl or A Million Days. Im sure that some of you dont like them but those are the only 2 songs on the album with any mainstream appeal
(Insert something clever here)

regardless on whether 'call my name' isn't your favorite song or if its too soulish for mtv, its still Prince's latest video and should be played everywhere...because theres tons of rubbish that doesn't appeal to each and everyone of us that still gets a great deal of airplay!

Like why play the same 10 videos all day when you got some new ones coming from PRINCE, ALANIS AND GEORGE MICHEAL!

Mtv is full of it!
If Mtv doesn't show his videos as much as they did MUSICOLOGY, of course sells will be low in retail...duh!

If Mtv didnt play Musicology often then I guarrantee this album wouldn't have sold as much as it did its first few weeks in stores...it wouldve only been concert sales, simply because BET didnt play it much and Vh1 isn't everyones favorite music tv network!

some cable companies don't even carry BET and the record buying public largely views MTV or listens to radio and we know how radio feels about PRINCE!

Mtv played "Morning Papers, Betcha By Golly Wow, and The Greatest Romance' Videos and reading so many negative comments about PRINCE releasing ballads and so on....MTV didnt seem to mind playing those videos, especially Morning Papers, which was pre-slave days for PRINCE...So there's a reason why MTV isn't showing this video and BABY YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT AIN'T ABOUT THE SONG BEING WEAK!!!
Because MTV already has the weakest playlist on the planet!!!
'Call My Name' is a great song, it ranks up there next to any ballad of the past, Mtv is just busy catering to Fat Joe, Jo Jo, and Hillary Duff, all of which aren't that great any damn way!
These songs will not even be thought of in 5 years...
As much as I support Terror Squad and Fat Joe! (Latino 4 LIFE)...but 'Call My Name' is alot better...its only because PRINCE doesn't kiss MTV's ASS!

I bet Cinnamon Girl will be the next video thou!
If Europe gets it soon, I'm sure it'll be rushed to the USA, being that its the kind of song VH1 and MTV wants PRINCE to sing anyways!

U r so on point playa. Look at who is sponsering USHERS tour....MTV. And people wonder y his shit is blowin up and his videos r played 2 death. Now i understand that P is more Adult Contemporary and not Teen POP, but as a living legend he should b played in a medium rotation format anyway.

how is an artist who sells 172,000 copies the 1st week of an album irrelevant? eek and that wasnt counting the cd giveaways..also i guarantee you if Usher had done Call My Name MTV would have played it like crazy

-----
True about Usher. If Usher has recorded Call My Name you would see the video 100 times a day. Keep in mind Usher just put out two ballads back to back and some portion of the record buying public seems to like his ballads. Prince is just getting dissed because of his past comments and his age.

If Usher put out "Call My Name" MTV execs would be in a state of constant orgasm.

Yeah, MTV is All RAP and HIP-HOP. But well They Were Playing Prince so I Don't Think they are Mad at Him..They Just are Catering to the WHOLe HIP-HOP Crowd. Usher is Good but he REALLY REMINDS me of a FORM of MICHAEL JACKSON.

So true. I'm sick of Soul Train too. It's no longer the Soul Train....it's the "Hip Hop Train". It is destroying the reputation of what used to be a damned good show. Hell, go off the air like American Bandstand did with some dignity.

Yeah baby they played P a little when the cd came out bcuz they could'nt totally ignore him bcuz that would have been 2 obvious of a slight against him. And plus P was out promoting the cd and was the talk of the Music Industry after the RRHOF performance and then the Tour took off under incredible reviews.....so they(MTV) played the game. P gave all the video channels a Prince special so they played Musicoclogy just like they did 'BetchyaByGollyWOW' in limited rotation. But notice the lack of MTV news reporting when P hit Newyork or LA or Chicago. U would think that they would keep u up 2 date with the #1 tour in the country just like they keep u updated about Britney Spears new relationships.

MTV is for a younger generation, and "call my name" has a retro vibe that kids who go to see usher, britney and 50 cent dont "get", they should however be playing him on VH1 cuz it fits perfectly there.
