You want a debate, now here's a debate...... Now, I still strongly believe that Wendy and Lisa were a big asset to Prince's work back in the Revolution era. Those 3 were an unstoppable musical force that made great music!!!! W&L's influence had definitely created an impact on Prince and his sound. He had the funk, but Wendy & Lisa added color and flavor to it.
Now when I get back from my dinner, I'm expecting a whole ass-load of comments, mostly disagreements. I dare you. [This message was edited Tue Jul 20 20:04:10 2004 by NWF] [This message was edited Tue Jul 20 20:11:08 2004 by NWF] NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Agreed. If Prince could have the fierce musicianship of the current NPG, but the experimental musings of W & L, I'd be happy.
I can only take so many more post Emacipation sounding albums before I get completely bored. I mean, it use to be that a Prince album meant you'd hear something completely fresh and new. That hasn't been true for years.

If I'm not mistaken, on Purple Rain, all words and music were written by Prince except for Computer Blue.
Correct me if I'm wrong. And I'm sure you will

Blah, I prefer the Prince without their sound. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

W&L did add some magical elements to Prince's sound from 85-86. However, he didn't need them. They were like sprinkles on a cupcake: nice to have, but they don't provide a major enhancement of the flavor. [This message was edited Tue Jul 20 18:57:19 2004 by psykosoul]

Wendy and Lisa helped Prince fashion the best music of his career in my opinion.

Absolutely correct. Wendy and Lisa are vastly underrated when it comes to Prince's history. They helped pushed him in directions during that period and showed him influences that helped shape his own voice as an artist that are a huge impact on music. Whether it be getting him into the Beatles during ATWIAD to being the first 2 he came to when it came to fully fleshing out the musical ideas in his head-their influence is far greater than most people realize. They had a heavy hand in his work, and if they didn't have the chops or if Prince didn't trust them they obviously wouldn't have been so involved. He respected and sought their input heavily. There's been other threads that have discussed their involvement, one in particular that included an article I found and posted from wendyandlisa.com that was circa 1997, with Wendy and Lisa discussing the past-let me know if anybody wants to read it again. The years of their collaboration will never be matched. Writing credits when it comes to Prince's work I think aren't always faithful to who added this element here, or another hook there, or who helped in all aspects of the arrangements. When it comes to the Revolution, it's always Prince's baby, but it's the combination of those he works with in the end that makes it so magical. Especially when it comes to Wendy and Lisa.

OK, I am back from dinner and I'm surprised to see the majority of you'ze agreeing with me. I didn't want this! I want some people to say "No he wasn't. He could do everything by himself".
Well I guess I'm glad that almost everyone agrees with me. I mean, it's the truth: Wendy & Lisa did create some great music when they were with our purple hero. I mean, you all listened to "Roadhouse Garden". It was great. It showed that Prince could get psychedelic and alternative as well as funky. It was basically a different facet of Prince's style. Thats been the difference in his music then and now. He actually had help with MANY of his old material. Now he just seems on rants of non sense with his music.
Many of his former friends and bandmates contributed to his works in the past. Not just lisa and wendy.

Now when I get back from my dinner, I'm expecting a whole ass-load of comments, mostly disagreements. I dare you. I can never pass up a dare. I think Wendy and Lisa added something to Prince's music, back in the day, but nothing more than the current NPG lineup Prince has now. Prince writes his own songs. He records half of them without any input. I have trouble believing the NPG has any more trouble than W&L did giving Prince input. Frankly, I think Wendy and Lisa's first solo album sucked, which shows me it was all about Prince. The ONE thing the Revolution added was PERSONALITY. We all knew the members of the band and their styles. I think that's one thing lacking with NPG. As far as music? It's always been mainly Prince and it always will be. Feel free to disagree. I don't really care. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. Luv & Peace, Alex Clubbin' in Mpls/A Night w. Prince

Many of his former friends and bandmates contributed to his works in the past. Not just lisa and wendy. So true. Wendy and Lisa are very talented as well but Andre Cymone was never given credit for his contributions. To me, the best Prince was when he had Andre, Dez, and several of The Time members around him. He putting out the HARD jams then. Wendy and Lisa kind of made his music weaker and more weird. Andy is a four letter word.

They were definetely an great asset for the work Prince was doing at the time. But without him, they ain't shit. I've heard W&L's solo work, it's pretty bland.

I never really got all the W&L hoopla. Yeah, they were cool, but P did manage to write some pretty amazing songs without them. Do any of you not dig the Controversy, Dirty Mind, 1999 and Purple Rain albums? What were their contributions to those? When you look at P's overall body of work, thier involvement is really quite small. If not for the Purple Rain movie, I doubt that we would even still be talking about them. Like somone said, Dez and Andre and even Fink conributed to P's work also. But our affection for them is not as great because we were not introduced to their personalities. IF they were such the power houses and driving forces being P's music that yall try to make them out to be, what happened to them? **************************************************

But Yáll seem 2 forget Levi,Micheal Bland,Kirk Johnson who all were great in their time and space!!This reminds me a lot on the threat about the NPG losing it´s MPLS-sound. We all have our fav bands or bandmembers-Lovesexy,NPG`91-95-but what matters is:we have only 1 Prince and I just LOVE all HIS music and it will keep on changing,4 better or(sometimes) worse.
