He just can't! (Mr. Jiggy Fly is a better rapper. wink) Hey, Stevie Wonder's a genius too, and he can't rap for sh*t either (and he knows it. Listen to "Do I Do.").

Yeah, Prince is too old school to attemp Hip-Hop (even though he was young when Hip-Hop began). I think the reason he was attempting rap in the early 90's was because he wanted to be relevant to the current trends that were happeneing at the time. I mean, Hip-Hop ruled in the late 80's-early 90's (it still does today as a matter of fact). And I guess Prince was trying to get some of that hype rubbed onto his style. Looking back on it though, I'd say it was big mistake. I mean, look at the Game Boyz. lol I swear, Prince must've been trying too hard to outdo M.C. Hammer of something. Prince should've just kept it real and continue being the original true artist that he is. But I suppose for the sake of commercial relevance, you'd do anything, right? lol

I'm only guessing here, but I think the reason why so many fans think that Prince's rapping is so aweful, is because Prince's rapping is so aweful ?

Bingo.

IMO rap is tack-o-rama, the genre that never changes, and never grows up. Music for the brain-dead.

Flame-away! lol

I disagree. Hip-Hop has always been an ever-changing genre. I mean, you don't see cats rocking stuff from the 1980's era of Hip-Hop today. It's not about gold chains anymore, it's about platinum and ice. lol

I think one big reason why so many Prince fans don't like his rap styled tracks is because many fans were with Prince before rap was popular. To them maybe Prince's rap dabbling seems like a sell-out? That's a less fair observation today but in the early-mid nineties I think you could make a strong case that Prince was experimenting with rap because he thought he could get a hit with it.

So true. Doing something strictly to get a hit.

Bullshit. That'd be like saying that Prince used drum machines in the 80's because he was copying New Wave and he was trying to get a hit. Prince seems to live and breathe music-. he always puts his spin on musical genres (rap included) It is very shakey ground to claim that Prince was trying to capitalize on a trend for a hit-more likely he was just trying something new.

I would guess that 85% of Prince rap haters are haters of Rap entirely...

Prince has a nice flow...everyone has their own style.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I just wish that folks would realize that HIP HOP and RAP are TWO different entities... I love the Hip Hop Culture and all its influences, and I happen to love rap music....as well as Prince. Hip Hop is a CULTURE, a style , a way of life for some that will NEVER go away. Its similiar to Rock and Roll, Jazz, and Classical, in that it creates a certain SETTING, a certain VISUAL. Prince is basically an EMPEROR of MUSIC in general, which means he has no CHOICE but to dabble/foray into hip hop, since he grew up with it as well.... As far as his RAPPING skills, I happen to like "Contradiction" from the Symbol album..and "Arrogance"....He isnt THE most lyrically deft...but he continues to make you move.... Sounds WAAAAY better then some simple "crunk" rap artists..
Tsk Tsk, What a pity...sometimes Life can be so shitty....

having ones own style doesn't mean ones style is good just because it is.

has EVERY prince rap been awful. no. The good Life has a cool rap, P Control has a cool rap. and for the sake of argument Come On is great, but calling it rap is a stretch.

but MOST of Prince's forays into rap have been rather terrible. majority rules, and in the case of his rap output the majority of it stinks.
this message brought to you by logic.
