Why do all of you think that Prince fails at Hip-Hop/Rap? Or do you think your too cool?

I for one dont think that he fails so much at his attempt at hip hop/ rap.
I dig Acknowledge Me, My Name is Prince even Tonys rap), Face Down, 18 & Over, Big Fun, Come On, ICP&C and many others. Hes not Tupac but why is it hip to bash his desire to branch out his music?

I think it just a matter of P not being perfect at everything he does. P's rapping ability is worse than Will Smith's.

I'm only guessing here, but I think the reason why so many fans think that Prince's rapping is so aweful, is because Prince's rapping is so aweful ?

RIGHT HERE!!!!! I'm glad he fails at rapping, maybe he won't do it anymore. I've been waiting since the early 1990s for hip hop to go out of style. I don't need Prince to help keep it alive.

PUssy got bank in her pocket, before she got dick in her draw's. Good I love that line. It's brilliant and nasty at the same time. I sure wish Prince would stop trying to be the best person he could be and just be a nasty ho with alot of talent.

P does more of Rythmic speaking than rapping similar 2 James Brown's style which he pretty much admitted 2. P is not trying 2 out rap any1 he is adding his input and his vibe 2it. P is a hands on artist he likes 2 do it all. I respect that he added hiphop 2 his style, hell hiphop is 2 popular 2 ignore. 'Irresistable Bitch' was a hiphop styled song. And i bet u that every1 on this thread who don't like P's so called attempts at Rap loved that song only bcuz it was back when P was super hot. They use phrases like....P needs 2 b like he used 2 b. They r livin in the past and won't let go. P is a chameleon, he is music all kinds!

Prince hit a homerun with the Come On remix as far as rapping. Mostly though, when it comes to Hippity-Hop, he makes TC Ellis sound good.

I like Tupac, Eminem, Jay-Z, NWA, Public Enemy and I also like Prince's rap. It's unique and it's very cool. Screw the haters.

I never considered "Irresistable Bitch" as a hip hop styled song. Like you said earlier, it was rythmic speaking. Lots of artists had a "rap" incorporated in their song back in the day. Look at Teena Marie's "Square Biz" or Stacy Lattisaw's "Feel My Love Tonight". It was a way of being cool.....talking shit....."doing the dozens" so to speak. The music was still original, there were no samples of old records, the tempo was still fast, the main focas was the song....the "rap" was just an added bonus. They were still musicians and singers but they could get down and "do the dozens" with the best of them. "If A Girl Answers (Don't Hang Up) by Vanity 6 is a perfect example.

As for hip hop in general, in the early days it was good. Look at "Pack Jam", "Electric Kingdom", "Egypt, Egypt", etc. The music was original, it wasn't an old record mixed over a beat. The tempo was fast for the dance floor.....what music should be for to begin with.

People talk about today's youth being more obese than they have ever been. Hell, their music is not fast enough to shake the fat off their asses!

Bingo.

IMO rap is tack-o-rama, the genre that never changes, and never grows up. Music for the brain-dead.

I never had a problem with Prince doing his rap/speak thing.
When he has other people rap on his songs its not so good.
Which songs that have Prince rapping do people feel are so terrible?

Another thing is that in alot of P's rap styled songs he does'nt take him self 2 seriously....they r 4 the most part humerous which is what i like about his style. 'Dead on It' is hilarious as well as 'Jughead' and 'The Latest Fashion', those songs 2 me in P's musical kingdom fits with his diverse personalities and lyric writing. U can't compare P 2 Tupac or Biggie, it won't make any sense bcuz P has created his own world that if u r not apart of it then u will think that he's lost his mind when in all actuality u've just misunderstood the fun behind it. Do u really think that P recorded 'POOM-POOM' 2 b taken seriously and compared 2 the hiphop artist of 2day? I think not....critics and fans r over anylyzing the situation in stead of having fun with it like P is doing!

Nice insight. Those jeans and football jerseys do make the music sound bad. Wait.....no they dont. You obviously hate the culture of rap instead of rap itself. Prince has embraced rap. He has scratches in much of his music. Without his feel and like for hip hop we would have never gotten the black album, alphabet st., p control, gettoff, my name is Prince, and many others

I think one big reason why so many Prince fans don't like his rap styled tracks is because many fans were with Prince before rap was popular. To them maybe Prince's rap dabbling seems like a sell-out? That's a less fair observation today but in the early-mid nineties I think you could make a strong case that Prince was experimenting with rap because he thought he could get a hit with it.

Another reason is because many of his rap experiments are just plain bad! To be fair to Prince he hasn't really worked with many talented rappers (Chuck D. aside). Where are TC Ellis, Tony M., Scrap D. et cetera today?

I do like some of Prince's rap songs but I don't think it's what he is best at.

The last thing I will say is just my opinion, so please don't take offense if you are a rap fan. To me rap is mostly about stealing other people's grooves. There is very little musical innovation in rap which is kind of why we all love Prince. Of course Prince's rap tracks are very seldom similar to other rap tracks but I believe that most fans kind of tune out when Prince starts rapping.

I agree that most of P's fans automaticlly hate the song if P raps or has a rapper on his song. None of the rappers that guested on P's songs r really that bad, like i've said b4 that i have heard worse with platinum albums. I think that there has been an uneccessary back lash of his incorporating hiphop in his music. And i'll point out again that 'Irrisistable Bitch' is a rap song. And when it came out they played the hell out of it at the clubs...it was on fire. P was'nt tryin 2 get a hit record using hiphop he was simply feeling hiphop just like now he's feeling more jazz like at this present time. P never stays the same. Its all genuine!
