Really ? It's a bit of a tenuous connection, don't you think ? I'd associate whips with bdsm, or even ice cream, but not with a car.

I'm assuming by the number of responses on this thread that it's a fairly widely used one as well, I'm just surprised I haven't heard it before. Given the amount of American tv we get to see over here I would have thought it was almost impossible to avoid hearing all the latest americanisationalisms.

By all logic, you make perfect sense, but a 'whip' remains a synonym for a car. Call it 'hood logic.

The fact that he mentions the price of her her whip in the song makes me think that "chips and whips" merely refers to:

Chips: food
Whips: sex toys

What else does a man need? Not a bad trade for hipping her to the funk.

Prince doesn't put down hip-hop so much as he puts down non-musicians. Unfortunately there are alot of non-musicians in hip-hop. He does respect hip hop artists with a wider range of musical ability like ?uestlove or Outkast. I think he's more annoyed by the Britney's of the music world who can't play and can barely sing.

I thought maybe he was hungry and meant to say chips 'n' dips.

Well, my thanks to CoolDoc and Mochalox for explaining it to me. I did think that dropping a couple hundred thousand dollars on a silver sex toy was a tad excessive, even for someone rich beyond compare (or a bitch beyond compare, whichever you prefer).

Well, now that I have a new word in my vocabulary I'm going to use it.
My whip is 14 years old and is overdue it's NCT (National Whip Test). I know it's going to fail....Which means it's useless - I won't be able to sell it without an NCT Cert. Maybe I should give it to Prince for his birthday. He'll have to collect it though.

Just out of curiousity, anyone know what particular hip hop song that came from? I consider myself a hip hop fan--though not what I'd call a hardcore one--and I'd never heard that phrase before...just wondering where it came from (and what "whip" has to do with a car)?

The term "whips" been out for a pretty long time. You can hear Master P or the Cash Money crew refer to cars as "whips" in their recent albums. Dirty South rappers use the term a lot more though.

Sorry a "whip" typically refers to a nice looking car. What you've described is a hooptie. wink
