I'm not against the practice of calling radio stations to request songs, but this is my personal gripe. I don't want to waste the time wading through the busy signals and " Please hold, your call is next in five minutes" or if you actually do get through, the DJ gives you that " Hey, OK, It's coming up..." answer and you wait two hours before you actually hear the song, if you hear it at all. If just making the effort would really have an impact, then I'm willing to change my mind. Thanks for the info. This is how it works:
You can get rite thru to the DJ or u may get a busy line!! They never make you hold!!! most times they wont play the song rite away but that doesnt matter!!! All u want is to get more airplay!!!

Eh...the way I see it, there are MANY people at Sony and Columbia (or Universal? jeez, there's too many now), not to mention at NPGMC, who get paid to promote Prince and his music....that ain't my job. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Prince made 45 million dollars this year, and you want me to call a radio station to get him on the radio? For what? He doesn't need radio support. He has already had oodles of radio support in the past. I dont get what difference it makes if Call My name is a smash or not. He has the number 1 tour in the country.

lets put it this way, the most impact you can have is if you call the station right after they play the song and ask who it is and tell them you love it.... this is more legit...
but even though you may not think you are making a difference every call does matter, most PD's will look at the lists of request and as long as its not obscure and irrelevant it will help when they talk to the labels... so basically calling does help. i can't tell you how many times i'm working a record and a pd will tell me they played it and got no response on it... also find out if you can join your local radiostations call out research panel.. they will call you about everything. Come on ppl, call already! Help out your fav artist if you really wanna show ppl what a real legend is all about. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Elboogy, what are you talkin about?
Prince made 45 million he has royalties, his publishing, his ,merchandise. How about people supporting artists who dont have two dimes to rub together? I never understand this fanatical allegiance to Prince and his singles on here. You explain to me why I should call up a radio station and support Prince instead of support a artist just tryin to have 1 moment in the sun. I dont think you can,El Boogy

IMHO----An artist that is looking for 1 moment in the sun has probably not dedicated 25 years of his life to making the best possible music he can for people like you and I. That kind of dedication EARNS my dedication, and will have it. How much money he makes doing it does not compensate for the amount of heart and soul that goes into every piece of music he puts out there for everyone.

okay, i bought tickets to six dang shows AND the simulcast, bought the stinkin' album even though i have musicology CDs shakin' outta my gutters, i bought three t-shirts, numerous downloads from his website's musicology store, a damn TOURBOOK (oops, bought one for a friend, too - TWO TOURBOOKS!!!), and i'm sure a freakload of stuff that i can't even recall right now, not to mention the time i've taken off work to see the simulcast and the concerts (i work nights, so i have to take vacation time to catch shows during the week).
now, i have absolutely no regrets and no gripes. it's been a hell of a year and i'm loving it. but i've supported prince quite sufficiently... i'm all for folks showing support and calling their radio stations and alla that, but if i gotta start street teamin' on top of everything else, i swear i'll spit food!!!

I did'nt say that any of u should call a radio station. I don't think it would help with P anyway bcuz he's an outsider and they r really trying 2 ignore him radio wise. Now i agree with u that unknown artist without major label representation need that kinda help. I was saying that P is an Icon who like other Icons should get played in rotation anyway just like they did back in the day. I don't know who's post u read but it was'nt mine. 2 piggyback off of 1 of your points.....P has the #1 tour+ top 10cd,but his singles can't crossover and be in the top 20 Pop singles chart! Does'nt make sense. That 2 me means that there r still hard feelings toward P by the Industry elite!Prince made 45 million he has royalties, his publishing, his ,merchandise. Bingo! Elboogy nailed it on the head. Can you imagine, Prince actually thinks the musicians should own their creations and make the money from record sales instead of some suit sitting behind a desk raking it in. That kind of thinking has to be stopped! Oh, and record sales are down because people are downloading music, not because the economy is down and the records being released suck. Oh, sorry, went off on a tagent there. I just can't resist a chance to bash the 'Industry elite'... What's the use of being young if you ain't gonna get old

Do you really want truth?
Here goes. El Boogy do you know why Prince isnt gettin airplay? Because "THE Network" was pumpin his songs for years in payola. Nobody has back to back hits without help these days and back then. All of these songs didn't blaze on the air because of fans callin up. They blazed because Warners was throwing stacks of paper at these djs in national markets to play it over and over and over until the Hysteria set in. Prince isn't throwin the money at the dj's. There is the short answer why Prince isn't on the radio in rotation,

Darling, Im talking about actual musicians who get NO chance of radioplay. It just boggles the mind how so many artists/musicians get passed over. Im talking about MUSICIANS who work just as hard as Prince at their craft who havent even got on the dial yet and they are 5-10 years in.

Prince became a megastar because of his live show. But star live performers alot of times don't have high record sales. Grateful Dead wasn't charting,Phish didnt chart, Yet these guys were at the top of the list for concert touring sales. Prince is older now and he is alienating video viewers by not making anything remotely interesting as a video. Look at Bjork/NIN/Missy/ You gotta do alot better in the video dept. The problem with Princes fanbase is, they dont understand how Prince got to the top of the charts. They want to turn a blind eye to the history of Princes hits. But look..... the fact is Prince needs to pay the djs and if he doesnt pay he isnt going to have a top ten single. If he doesn't want to pay he won't be there. Call My Name does stand a chance with a big payment to Independent Promoters. 1999 did not just explode because Prince willed it. Do you realize Pink Floyds "Another brick in the wall" couldnt get airplay in LA even though they were selling out ARENAS? Dj's wouldn't play it? It was a experiment to test the "NETWORK" What do you think happened when the label paid the djs?In a week... it shot from the bottom of the chart to the higher end. I am going to tell something to all the orgers. You pay the price if you want to be a megastar on the radio....literally... And Prince was no exception... Just remember that.... Princes last hit single was not a fluke. Bellmark paid for it to be semi big on radio. Anyways, it's something to keep in mind when you are cheerin a song to be a hit. There IS no conspiracy to ban Prince off the charts. It's because the labels havent paid in a long long time. I think EMI probably paid to get Betcha By golly wow on the radio. That was a mistake... it was just not gonna resonant with listeners after repeated spins.

This makes you wonder why you should bother listening to the radio at all. It's like politics the
only choices your given are the ones that people with money have given you to choose from. While I think Prince would be flattered by the dedication of his fans, I truly believe he would much prefer they dedicate that time making the world a better place while enjoying his music as their soundtrack to their lives. But getting a lot of radio play does'nt always translate in2 a hit single. The song itself has 2 b of some quality most of the time 4 people 2 like it. Or the Artist has 2 b very popular and well liked. TMBGITW was a hit bcuz it was a good song that got the proper exposure. Since then P has not had that luxury there4 not charting any hit singles which gives the perception that P has'nt been making hit worthy singles which is BS! And the conspiracy is this.....P is not the model artist the industry wants 2 push. He's doing the independant internet thing and keeping his Masters. They don't want thier artist thinking bizness that way so the Payola that u speak of is flipped.....Big Whigz/industry Elites pay radio not 2 play P's singles. They end up killin P's momentum bcuz they have more$$$$$(payola). If P was talkin about the same things the hiphop artist was talkin about and was'nt tryin 2 get his masters back he'd b gettin played like Santana did. Santana might not have blew up that year without payola. Back in the day u had more record companies with that was'nt controlled by 1 or 2 mega giants like clear channel so u had a more diverse type of top 40 instead of Lil'John & R'\.Kelly having 5 produced songs in the top 10. Every major artist hooked up with a major label gets the payola treatment but right now it's obvious that P ain't doin the payola thing bcuz it's not a hit single that gives him his BUZZ but his live performance. That's y he keeps reinterating Real music by real musicians!, and it's working. Well, ain't it funny how over the last years most org.ers were saying "well, the charts don't matter, as long as the music is funky and Prince is making money anyway" (concerts, royalties - contrary to most believe, he must get a healthy sum from the "slavery machine" Warners each year).
And now all of the sudden this urge to see Prince in the charts... My 5 cent: Prince is too old to be massive again chartswise - exceptions to the rule prove you won't have massive radio impact with your new songs when you are that old. Also, the sales are normally not anywhere near to what successful bands in their 20s/30s achieve... However, touring is another thing, as you can stil draw a crowd that grows old with you. Prince is a perfect example for this development over the years. See also Eric Clapton, Sting, Rolling Stones, James Brown, etc... What satisfaction do you get from hearing Prince on the radio with his new songs? I don't get any... (well, I don't really listen to the radio that much anyway).
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I get satisfaction outta hearing Prince's new stuff on the radio cause it's good music on the radio which is rare these days, so yeah, I like to hear prince's stuff on the radio but not so much for the chart position except for that means it will continue to be played for a while.
People, call and request it if you want but no one is forcing those who don't want too....if you want to call and request someone else...some little known artist with no money...go for it...no one is stopping you. "not a fan" yeah...ok

I've got one word for this. . . . SANTANA!! He was 5 times bigger and more popular than he EVER was in his 20's or 30's!! And it wasn't just one hit he came back with. Granted. . he had a lot of younger "guests" on his album to appeal to the younger crowd. . but it was still the classic Santana. I am not a huge fan of his. . but many koodos to the man for coming out with such a MEGA hit in his later years. As far as "Payola" goes. . .didn't they outlaw that in the 60's or 70's?? I still think that Prince is more than capable of putting out another "Mega-HIT" anytime he wants to. Personally, I think that he is producting the music HE wants to produce. . and if the general public comes along for the ride. . . GREAT!! But that's NOT what his music is all about.. (popularity, that is)

uh, maybe that's because that cat hasn't even been given a chance to do so by the powers that be. there's plenty of other people out there who have been doin their thing even longer than prince has been on wax and they still haven't got theirs. i swear to gawd, the blind fanaticism i see on here some days makes me wanna retch.

k, is everyone PMSing round here or what? These threads have been posted EVERY week with updates on the airplay and a request that people call radio and ask for the song to be played. It really ain't that big of a deal y'all! I like the info that's provided about the airplay, but honestly have yet to call and make a request. But with all the threads like this ('request this song', 'vote for Prince on mtv.com', etc) this is the 1st time I've seen a big fight brew over it. With this being a Prince site, and this specifically being the PRINCE MUSIC FORUM, I'd be a little confused if there weren't threads telling me to call and request his music. this place cracks me up
