Madhouse 16- WoW! Just bought a copy of the Madhouse 16 album on vinyl and all i can say is WOW! It's amazing. I wouldn't say it's as experimental as NEWS but it's certainly funkier. The 9 track. I wish he was making funk like that now. Could somebody tell me what the first one (8) is like. Is it better, worse? I'm now hoping to find the two on cd on ebay. How much do you reckon they'll go for? Peace out and b wild!

How weird. I was just listening to 8 last night on vinyl. At the time it was released, I thought it was a straight-up jazz album. Now, after many years of jazz-listening, I see that it's really not. But it's great for what it is - great jazzy funk instrumentals. The song "6" was the big hit off of this one. And it's still great. Hop on it if you can.

16 is one of my very favourite Prince records. Fourteen is sublime, very, very under-rated.
I know 8 is usually more popular, but I'm definately a bigger fan of 16.

i'm more familiar with 8 but i think 16 is a lot more interesting.

Someone hit 'em with the facts I shit a brick when i found out that Prince plays ALL of the basic tracks (which he started with the drum tracks) on the 8 album "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

O.K. if you say so, you all sound pretty sure, I just had a quick look at the album covers and there's nothing about that so..... I just have to listen to them again one of these days I've got to reinstall my turntables.

He replied, it's Jazz..... but Prince-Jazz I think i like 8 a little more because 16 sounds more beat-machine groove oriented as opposed to the live drum sound on 8. The song "one" is just awesome with that quiet little bass break down near the end Before Prince's recent Jazz output, "One" would be one of the songs that i would lay on someone to make them say: "This is Prince..... Wow!" and you know that Prince really liked the song "four" as it was on the b-side of one of the singles and he has used it in live versions of Dorothy Parker for years. "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

Where does that information come from? There is an awesome interview with Eric Leeds that I heard on a BBC special where he tells this whole story about Prince calling him in to the studio in the middle of the night because he has been laying down some hot tracks. Eric worked with him all night recording horn tracks. They were excited about the recordings and Eric went home real late, and just as he gets in to bed, gets a call from Prince!! Who says: Eric, you gotta get back over here, I just layed down another great track!! So Eric got out of bed and went back to the studio where Prince had all of the song 6 recorded and waiting for the horn!!! Prince is awesome!! "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

Where does that information come from? Its common knowledge, from every book, or protege interview, to the sudio engineers, that the Madhouse projects were Prince albums. "8" was all Prince (with Eric), while 16 featured a few others. They are as much Prince as New Power Soul is. Don't believe what you read on the sleeves, otherwise you'll be trying to find out who Jamie Starr is for a very long time..... .

By the way, you do not have to search for evidence in how many ways Prince was over these two albums.
You hear his licks, his grooves. Basically, it Prince feeding off Eric Leeds's jazz vibe and making it his.

Any help appreciated! ----- There's actually another band out there named Madhouse. I don't know what kind of music they play but it is DEFINATELY not Prince-related. I always wondered how they got away with calling themselves Madhouse. I found this on www.allmusic.com: Hailing from Berkeley, CA, the jazz ensemble Madhouse is comprised of members Scott Price (keyboards), Don Rowlands (drums), Mark Holzinger (guitar), and Neal Heidler (bass). Holzinger, Heidler, and Rowlands have been longtime fixtures in the San Francisco Bay Area scene, with each member possessing an impressive resume of credits (Holzinger: Marvin Gaye, Joe Williams, Mark Isham, David Benoit, Ricky Lee Jones, Bobby McFerrin, Heidler: John Handy, Richie Cole, Mark Levine, Eddie Harris, Rowlands: Dan Hicks, Ross Valory, Steph Burns, and Lady Bianca). June of 2000 saw the release of Madhouse's debut album, The State We're In, which included special guest appearances by saxophonists Peter Apfelbaum and Chuck Clark, percussionist Jesús Diaz, plus clarinetist Sheldon Brown.
