"Crucial." The first time I heard it, I was like, "What the hell is the big deal?" It struck me as a generic ballad with sappy lyrics.
Then I heard it a few more times and it just hit me. I freakin LOVE this song to death. "I ain't sayin' you're better baby, but I ain't sayin' you're not!" Absolute classic. The Normal Whores Club

Most of them struck a chord instantly. I didn't really dig Delirious the first time I heard it. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

"Cream." I hated it and just felt it had nothing to offer. It took a while to grow on me.

Condition Of The Heart irritated the hell out of me at first.

i HATED If I was your Girlfriend for the longest time. I thought it was a waste of space and a joke. When I heard it was the 2nd single from SOTT I about had a coronary. I remember very clearly calling my best friend - also a Prince fanatic - in disbelief. (We also got into a fight one time over the phone, because he said he bought the 45 and the B-side was called "Shockadelica", and He got mad because I didn't believe him and I insisted he was pulling my leg.... but I digress).
But of course I warmed up to it... to say the least. Now I consider it one of his finest achievements. Of course, as a 14 or 15 year old when SOTT came out, I guess I didn't quite "get" it.

Most of Parade threwme off until I listened several times. Now I realise how groundbreaking the sound really was. (Insert something clever here)

The song "It". It took awhile to grow on me. I think the last half of the song rocks with the computer drum rolls and the orchestra in the background. Some fans think this song is a filler on SOTT, but i like it.

Ballad of Dorthy Parker. I used to skip it and thought it was a boring song, but as I got older it grew on me. "Did u love somebody
But got no love in return? Did u understand the real meaning of love? That it just is and never yearns" ...Prince

"Rave onto the joy fantastic"- the song that is! Good early morning getting readt to go to work song- only in the mid morning though!(?)
"The holy river"- sounded great (title wise) but didn't like it at first-put it straight to walkmen anyway- gave it a 2nd chance "and then it hit me like a....." errrrr anyway, I was walking down the street and song and words got to me, just passing people normally in the street-quite touching actually, then I loved it.....possibally Prince's "deepest" song that I can realte too..... KISS. I was 13. The DJ announced that he was about to play the "new" PRINCE song. I immediately ran to get a blank tape and started recording. An hour (!) later, this weird "demo" came through the speakers. Just a guitar lick, a simple drum beat and a high voice. I was horrified. "What!!?" My Mom laughed. "What is he doing?," she said. "Turn up the bass." I did, thinking that would solve the problem. It didn't. The song didn't have a bass part. I played it over and over trying to get into it. I played it for my cousin. "It's so plain!," she said. I told her that I loved it, though I secretly thought that my hero had fallen. I was depressed. Until a few days later, when I heard it in a passing car. It hit me like a ton of bricks. "OH!" Genius! Weeks later EVERYONE was playing it. I anxiously awaited PARADE. I went through the entire experience again. "What?!!!"....."OH!" Unfortunately, years later, I'm still in the "What?"-stage with UNDER THE CHERRY MOON.

The first time I heard Adore, I was not very impressed. Keep in mind that it had a LOT to live up to, since everyone on the org had been raving about it being the best love song EVER etc etc etc. But now I love it. I mean, like, where is the sun?

None. The ones I didn't like after first hearing 'em are the ones I still don't like.
But "When Doves Cry" stunned me into ambivalence after I heard it the first few times. That's what blazing an entirely new trail feels like sometimes. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.
