Not really. The music from the album "1999" was very futuristic. The music in the real year 1999 was far from futuristic unless you count house music and it was underground.

"1999" was only futuristic in 1982. Ain't nothin' futuristic about the Linn, or synths now.
It's what an artist has to say that matters.

When I say futuristic, I'm not talking about some new groundbreaking instruments. I know the instruments from "1999" are considered outdated in today's music, I'm talking about the "sound". When I listen to "1999", I envision a Jetsons era. Nothing on today's radio sounds futuristic. Whatever drum machines the current artists are using sound horrible. They sound weak. That's just it...somebody, it doesn't even have to be Prince...needs to start a new trend and get us out of this dull era we live in.

Come to think of it, I wouldn't mind an R&B album. I mean, the best part of Musicology was the ballads, so I think it could make for a great album.

Prince said the next one would be for the fans, so what do you want from it? I'd like either a fully fledged FUNK album played with the band, or a seriously GUITAR oriented venture. The greatest hits acoustic album seems like it'll be neither.

I would like a really wild guitar oriented venture. Not a remake of Purple Rain, but something FRESH that could just show Prince tearing it up with his funky guitar. Prince has written enough ballads in the past 2 years to last us the rest of the 21st Century. Now, how about some straight up rock, with a little funk as a chaser? headbang

Prince doesn't sound anywhere near as FUNKY without his band nowadays. His ability to lay down a truly innovative or seriously funky beat is sadly lacking, and without inspiration from the players in his band, he's on route to producing another 'expected' album worth of songs like Musicology (which is fine for mass consumption, but not for musical heads). The Rainbow Children sounded as good as it did because of the live sound his band gave it. Musicology would have sounded much better with a similar feel. Prince alone in the studio ain't funky no more, long gone are the days of Camille.

I agree, I'd love some funk.

I don't mind what style his next album will be, but I hope it will be wild! And I hope the band will play the songs with him, they are outstanding musicians!

Unfortunately I fear the worst. Some JW inspired album. Unfortunately he always manages to lose the public interest when his momentum is at its peak. He needs another publicly accepted album before he gets back to his overt creativity.

Very true, the "general" public have now accepted Prince again, he needs to keep the momentuem going so another safe alum will be needed.

With his business savvy I'm sure that won't b a problem, will it? Just look at what he did after past 'peaks' Purple Rain, Batman and Diamonds and Pearls

I generally like to be surprised, and he's still capable of the element of surprise. But then I thought about it, and I'd like that surprise to be guitar oriented. biggrin The style of music doesn't necessarily matter. Just uninhibit yourself and wreck the joint. In short: surprise me with that axe in the center of it all.

Yeah, I'm definitely down to hear some guitar-based music. I think he's milking this funk thing a little bit too much now. I want some ROCK & ROLL!!!!! guitar

Actually, I think he should also get back with Wendy & Lisa and do some more Alternative/Jangly/Psychedelic/Paisley/Funk/Pop. Them Roadhouse Garden sessions were great and it showed a very colorful and creative side to Prince. We're not really seeing him tap into that stuff anymore. Well, there is "Cinnamon Girl", but that's not like his stuff with W&L.

shrug Just a thought.
