'The Dawn' project (again, I know) IF this wild and wonderful piece of work had been released, were there to be any tracks from 'Emancipation' included?
And how about that b-side "Rock N Roll Is Alive (And It Lives In Minneapolis)?" Just trying to get a grip on this opus!!! "Whatever skin we're in

Ya know, Sparky, I was thinkin' the same thing.
But, if I had to guess, maybe: "Somebody's Somebody" "Slave" "New World" "Face Down" & "Emancipation" could've been included but, maybe not "Whatever skin we're in
we all need 2 b friends" | |

Is it supposed 2 b an album 2? The picture you posted looks like the opening screen of thedawn.com, which was Prince's first official website. It opened on February 14, 1996, the day he married Mayte, and it contained that story, IIRC. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

Am I to understand that "Welcome 2 The Dawn" is on this cassette? Was it that (acoustic version) from 'The Truth' or a different one? "Whatever skin we're in

Yes, it's the same acoustic version that later appeared on 'The Truth'. When this cassette was released Prince was planning to release 'The Dawn' as his next album (after Emancipation). This was about the third time he'd assembled an album called 'The Dawn' ready for release, but then shelved it.

My guess is that he'd planned on the 'original' full version of Welcome 2 The Dawn being included on The Dawn, and the Acoustic Version being included on The Truth - perhaps this is why on The Truth album, W2TD is the only track to include "(Acoustic Version)" after the title. Not that any of the tracks on The Truth are fully acoustic, but that's a different story... We can take pretty good guesses on some of the tracks included on The Dawn (1986) and The Dawn (1993/1994), but I have very little idea what might have been included on The Dawn (1997) - any ideas? I wonder if he'll ever decide to assemble a new one?

ok
so back to my first question: were there any tracks that showed up on 'Emancipation' intended first for 'The Dawn' (93/94)? was "Rock N Roll Is Alive (and it lives in Minneapolis)" also to be on it? alright, 2 ?'s "Whatever skin we're in

So I think it was recorded too late for The Dawn, and was considered a one-off novelty track good for a b-side but not an album.

We can only speculate. Emancipation was mostly made up of new tracks, so there probaby weren't many (or any) tracks from it on the '94 'The Dawn'. The only track that springs to mind is 'Somebody's Somebody' as that WAS from the 'gold' era. As for 'Rock N Roll Is Alive', well we just don't know, but I doubt it as it was recorded quite late on, and grew out of a jam that came out of playing 'Get Wild' live. One thought that did occur to me about 'The Dawn' (94), was that maybe it wouldn't have been all Prince-sung tracks, maybe it would've been like 'Graffiti Bridge' with all the songs being written and played mostly by Prince, but with some of them featuring other band mambers on lead vocals. This is pure speculation, but around that time Prince seemed to be intent on pushing his proteges etc. The Dawn concert also featured a lot of guests taking over the mic as well. So maybe he intended on breaking up the album by having 'guest vocals' from Mayte, Nona Gaye, Sonny or Rosie etc? It's just a thought. Thank You, Booya!
It's nice to know that there are other people to converse with! that bit about Lenny is interresting. I was just wondering, if I was to try and assemble 'The Dawn' as accurately as possible, what else there would be to add other than 'TGE' and 'Come'? I gather that several tracks from 'CB' were also included(ie."Hide The Bone","Days Of Wild","The Ride",etc) but, surely, there were more? "Whatever skin we're in

Thank You, too, Boris!
Would it be safe to say that some tracks from 'Exodus' could've been included? Perhaps "Count The Days"? Was it you that also said that "Johnny" from 'GN' was in the mix at some point? "Whatever skin we're in

Johnny was featured a lot early on, but by mid '93 it had been given to the NPG's Goldnigga album. Though having said that, Goldnigga itself was formed out of offcuts of previously unreleased Prince and the NPG tracks. 'Call The Law' had already been released as the b-side to 'Money Don't Matter 2night' and 'Black MF In The House' was originally going to be the b-side to 'Sexy MF'. Prince was playing 'Johnny' alongside a lot of 'Come' tracks live around that time too. It's also interesting to notice that the heartbeat that ends 'Chaos And Disorder' is exactly the same as the one that starts Mayte's 'The Rhythm Of Your Heart', so maybe these 2 tracks were segued together at some point. Plus the original version of 'However Much U Want' feautures Prince's vocals much more prominently than the stripped down released version.

to 'Sexy MF'. Really? Very cool - never knew that... Boris, you are a mine of information. Do you know any more? Was it the same version as was released? This was over a year earlier, and more of a Prince project, so maybe not (of course, Call The Law was the same). Why was it dropped and replaced by Strollin'? To give a radio-friendly track to make up for Sexy MF?

To give a radio-friendly track to make up for Sexy MF? No idea whether it was the same version or not, as I never heard it at that time. Since 'Call The Law' was identical on 'Goldnigga' and as a b-side, I'd guess it was the same too. It was listed as the b-side on Warners release schedule prior to Sexy MF's release. I can remember assuming at the time that it was just gonna be some kinda distantly-related remix of Sexy MF (due to the MF in the title), like 'Violet The Organ Grinder' was to 'Gett Off' or 'Do Your Dance' was to 'Cream'. Then when I finally heard the track when it was released on Goldnigga, I was pleasantly surprised that a) it was a totally original song, and b) it was extremely good (and funny).

So, Boris,
you're giving me hints, here, i see then, there would've also been tracks that later appeared on 'Child Of The Sun' included? I guess i better pay better attention to fade outs/ins and segues, eh? alot of Prince's albums seem to be spliced together from previous projects, now that you mention it. I'm gonna go out on a limb, here, and say that the last two "full" albums (TRC & Musicology) were the last records that include exactly what was intended. i mean to say, no left-overs from other projects. maybe. TRC seems that way, to me anyways "Whatever skin we're in
