Prince is at least bi-sexual if not fully gay. This can be evidenced in his clothing, his mannerisms, and his lyrics. Yes, I understand he has an obsession with viginas but on a symbolic level vaginas are merely inverted penises. And Prince has often been ass backward about things.

Because of the personal, racial and sexual repression that was so pervasive during the 70’s, Prince lives in a world of self-shame, and this is something that he has never been able to kick. It’s a very difficult balancing act for him to follow. He’s a musician at heart, and he has always tried to be as honest as possible with himself when it came to his art, but he hides this deep dark secret (at least for himself). Thus, in an effort to express his sexual orientation, he does so by indirectly stating it in his clothing, his mannerisms, and thinly veiled lyrics.

CLOTHING. Oh my God, he dresses so gay, that gay men themselves are completely unable to compete with his level of almost total and absolute gayness (when it comes to attire). If it isn’t assless pants and string bikinis with bandannas and leather boots that ride to the hips, it can probably be evidenced in the inch think makeup that borderlines on drag queen chic. Libarace’ could only dream of looking that good in Zoro suites.

MANUERISMS. What I mean by this is his little Shirly Temple Pouts (remember that skin crawling pout in purple rain with the stupid puppet?), his Bettie Davis bed room eyes (framed by massive dabs of eyeliner), and his tendancy to sound like a drag queen even when he lowers his voice. Liberace’ could only dream of sounding that way.

HIS LYRICS. Oh My God, he innuendo’s abound here. Prince is so gay in this department that he makes Morrissey’s “Hair Dresser on Fire” rhetoric look like Joey Soprano. Some evidence to this is:

From the Black Album: “I just hate 2 C and erection go to waste”….. (Why not make that lyric more plain by stating, “I just hate 2 C “MY” erection go to waste.” Now we’re forced to say, “Who’s erection, Prince?? Morris? Jerome? Kat’s?” Yeah, Yeah, Prince says later that “HE’s” rock hard in a funky place, but come on guys—that lyric was meant to make us wonder. And I for one, took the bait.

Boot Leg: School Yard. The entire Manage a Tois makes it sound like Prince, some chick, and a male friend all had consensual sex—during the entire length of this song, it’s never clear who all had sex with who. Prince, I plead with you—just admit it!

From the Song, BAMBI. “Bambi, can’t U understand? Bambi, It’s better with a man…” There are sooooo many less ambiguous ways to tell a lesbian that sex is better between a man and a woman than the way Prince is stating it. In phrasing the sentence this way (Which was very deliberate), Prince is forcing the audience to say, “How does he KNOW it’s better with a man?”. Oh, Prince, just come out and say it! Liberace’ could only dream of skirting so close with admitting.

From “We Can Funk” off Graffiti Bridge. “I’ll be Ur Boy or Girl, I will be Ur world”. Oh, Lawd, Prince—we understand kinky, but now we’re being forced to ask, is this about courting lesbians for the umpteenth millionth time, or is this about you courting different sexes? Prince, just admit it. Liberace’ could only dream of being this kinky.

From “Diamonds and Pearls”. Prince states: “If I gave U diamonds and Pearls, would U be a happy Boy or a Girl?”. He then mellows the lyrics down to sound like it’s not meant to have any sexual connotation.

There are many many more deliberately confounding lyrics in his library, but somewhere in the early 90’s till present day, he shifts his lyrics further away from ambiguously sexual to religiously confusing. Lyrics from albums after tend to be more straightforwardly heterosexual ones, with very few references to jacking people off, delving into ideas of being someone’s “Girlfriend”, and such. Albums after also tended to be more afro-centric than racially neutral (with the exception of Chaos and Disorder). His outfits now are becoming more about pimpin out then “Coming Out”.

But back in the day, Prince was very much trying to Come out in his songs. His lyrics are precise, deliberate, and purposefully scandalous. Pure Genous. Liberace could only dream of such flamboyant yet closeted behavior.

By the way, Liberace’ is mentioned in “Under the Cherry Moon.”
