Waiting On The UPS Man/Albums You Purchased On The Day Of Release

I am doing this a little more frequently now that I am an adult. However, when I was a teenager I remember skipping school to go to the record store on the day that "Around The World In A Day" was released(April 21st 1985...I think that was the day it was released). Me and another dude (who was skipping school as well)arrived at Turtles(which is now called Wherehouse Music....). 5 minutes before the record store opened up. When they opened the store, we rushed in, but didn't see Prince's new release. We started tripping....."Hey where's Prince's new release???" "It haven't arrived yet" says the clerk. "Man what kind of BS is this"???I said. Well... the date of release is April 21st" I stated. Man... I was THIS CLOSE to asking for the manager(LOL). "Sir, you have to understand the UPS truck hasn't arrived with our products yet", says the clerk. So me and the other dude left and went to the mall and came back later(a hour late to be exact). When we got back to the store we saw the "Around The World In A Day"albums on the rack. Man... we ran straight to the racks and grabbed the albums. Man we were like crack fiends spotting some crack from a distance(LOL).
Once I purchased the album, I then had to take some back roads and some backwoods on the way home. I didn't want any of parents' friends who stayed on my street or better yet MY PARENTS to catch me skipping school. Once I got home, I immediately opened the album up and played it. Ahhhh I was cured!!!!! I ditched eduaction for a day to purchase a new Prince album. Pretty productive day...wouldn't you say???(LOL)

I say that to say this. What albums did you rush to purchase on the day of release???? Now out of the albums you rushed to buy on the day of its' release, which ones you feel were worth you taking the time to go the store(no matter what the circumstances were)to purchase? Here are a list of albums I bought on the first day that I can think of off the bat....

* Prince And The Revolution "Around The World In A Day(album was good but not what I was expecting at the time...I have grown to like this album better though

* Prince And The Revolution "Parade"- This was worth me SKIPPIN SCHOOL AGAIN almost a year later(March 1986) to purchase(smile).

* Michael Jackson-Bad...I was out of high school by now. However, this was a good record.

* Erykah Badu-Baduizm...WOW.... Erykah performed a one hour show on BET a day before her debut release hit the stores(a brillant PR move...BTW). Man I was hooked from her captivating stage persona/charisma. All I could say is tomorrow I'm going straight to the store to buy this one. And when I bought it the nextday and played I was not dissappointed. A major stellar recording. A stunning debut!!!!! I remember the UPS guy delivering this one at the store I was at. I grabbed the first one out the box.

OK now it's your turn!!!!! Peace!!!!

i remember the day that Sign O The Times was released... me and my (former) best friend got out of school, and WALKED two miles to the record store. neither of us had enough money to get one copy each, so we pooled our money together and bought only one copy of the album, and we ended up each taking one of the records in the two record set. i got the first album, he got the second. we both went home to dive into it, and then we called each other and played on the phone what we thought were the highlights. the next day we traded off..... damn, what a beautiful time that was. smile

i....feel.... cold as a razorblade, tight as a tourniquet, dry as a funeral drum......

Well, Gold Experience really got me hooked and I knew that Prince was the man. So I ended up purchasing Chaos and Disorder, Emancipation, Crystal Ball (in the stores release), and Rave on the day of release. Chaos was totally worth it, I loved the album, and didn't understand why others didn't, but I did think there were some weak spots initially. Emancipation I bought as soon as I got out of school, went home and listened to it straight through (tried to, fell asleep during the second song on disk 2, couldn't help it, I was tired!) Anyway, that was worth it, I enjoyed that very much initially. I mean, how can it not be a thrill to get 3 CDs of your favorite artist all at once? Crystal Ball, it was worth it, but honestly, I heard the whole thing online for the most part before it was released and I was blown away by the majority of it when I heard it online. When Rave came out, I was in college, and I skipped a class to buy it, and unfortunately, I did not feel it was worth it. I remembered thinking that I liked it, but it didn't move me the way past albums had. I downloaded Rainbow children before it came out, and New Power Soul I got like the third day of release because I was on vacation with my family, and could only get when I could get to it, you know.

I have purchased every record Prince record from Purple Rain through TRC on the day of release. I have also picked up all the singles on the day of release. I am assuming that most fans are like this. Why would you wait?

i usually go the day they come out too. i remember in 86 the new Van Halen (5150) came out the same day as Parade, and their WB catalog numbers are sequential. i think the Rolling Stones "Dirty Work" may have dropped the same day, so i would have gotten all three. nowadays i hit Best Buy before coming to work, i can be at BB right at 10 AM and still get to work at 10:30. if not, i go at lunch. i don't preorder anything online, it never comes the day its supposed to, always late.

Anxiety

Like the true Prince Geek I am, I've gotten every Prince album since ATWIAD on the first day of store release. I remember having going out for a special dinner with a friend to celebrate SOTT coming out, ha.

I think the only P album I haven't gotten on the day of release was NPS, and you all know I could argue that isn't an "official" Prince album...but what the hell, that was my one lapse. I went astray - sue me.

Prince Albums

Emancipation-I actually called in sick to work so I could go buy this one.

Come-skipped a social psych class so I could get it

Gold Experience-skipped a calculus class foe this one

Rainbow Children-I couldn't call in sick for this one so I cancelled a date so I could get it the evening it came out

Non Prince Albums

Tori Amos-Crucify-skipped a class my freshmen year in highschool.

Enya-A Day Without Rain-was late for a doctors appointment cuz I stopped off to get it on the way.

George Michael-Songs From The Last Century-I had no money the day it came out. So I gave up my cigarette money to buy it and then whent four days without smoking.

I purchased all of these on the official release date:

- Come
- The Gold Experience
- Chaos and Disorder
- Emancipation (I bought this one at a midnight release sale)
- Rave un2 the Joy Fantastic

I found Newpower Soul on sale a few days before the official release date, so I snagged a copy then.

I was going to buy the Girl 6 soundtrack on the release date, but a massive snowstorm effectively shut down the city, so I had to wait a few days.
